We came back to Fratellini a couple times during our trip to try different sandwiches, and every sandwich we tried was fresh and flavorful. Service was quick, and there was no line. They do offer alcoholic beverages, but their sandwiches are the star of the show!

One side seemed to have more alcohol on display and the side I was on was more sandwich focused, but I'm pretty sure you can order the same things from both windows. Initially I was going to get the 21 - Fresh Sausage and Eggplant because I'm an eggplant lover... the lady at the counter was kind enough to let me know that the fresh sausage is actually rare, uncooked sausage and gave me a small piece to try. I was getting ready to get on a train that day and didn't want something that might not sit well with me, so I moved on to number 27 spicy salami and cream cheese. My partner got the number 1, ham, cream cheese and rocket salad. Both are very good sized and oh so delicious. The line moved quickly, so many options for decision paralysis. This is the place for schiacciate Florentine as recommended from friends who used to live here. Definitely would recommend to study up their menu before coming so it's easier to pick what you want. This is more of a stall and you grab and go, we stood around the sidewalk and inhaled our sandwiches. Watch out for the pigeons getting ready to take your crumbs too, you can see them on the ledge of the building getting ready to attack. A must visit for Florence.

We ate here twice a day even got sandwiches for the plane ride across the pond. You walk in and can sample all 5 types of meat, cheeses, select topping and select your type of roll. The Ciabatta Toscini is crusty on the outsoft but pilloy soft on the inside. One can also mix the selections of meats. The crown jewel is the veggies: tomatoes, argula, zucchini, sun dried tomatoes (best one), salsas, grilled peppers and pesto. If you are a foodie, this is your dream sandwich as you can create whatever you want. The value here is huge. In Florence and walking for hours, sight-seeing, stop at Panini Toscani for a life changing custom Italian dream sandwich. This place will NEVER dissappoint.

It would be the third sandwich spot on our trip, and we had been to a couple of bangers beforehand that set the bar. I was a bit worried that we were getting lured into a tourist trap because of the restaurant being by the duomo, but it was located behind it where there was much less foot traffic compared to the front facing Piazza Santa Maria Novella. We arrived around noon on a Sunday. My husband and I arrived early enough to beat the lunch crowd, so we had no wait at all. By the time we finished our sandwiches, we saw the queue out the door. There were a couple of high tables inside the restaurant, but there was more seating outdoor. I really liked how you can customize your sandwich the way you wanted down to the bread, meats, cheeses, and toppings. They didn't only have schiaccata bread, which I thought was cool. You had other options of breads like ciabatta. Panini Toscani allows you to sample their various meats, such as porchetta, proscuitto, mortadella, etc. As someone who doesn't eat pork, one of the employees had me sample their various cheeses instead. Since I've been eating schiaccati the past 2 days, I stuck to the same bread as a baseline and added soft cheese, arugula, spicy marinara, eggplant, and sundried tomatoes. I enjoyed my sandwich very much, and the crunch on the bread was everything.

From the outside, it looks like a grand, iron-and-glass structure typical of European markets; inside, it opens into a bustling, multi-level space filled with food vendors, communal tables, and constant movement. The vibe is energetic, social, and slightly chaotic in a fun way - perfect for grazing, group dining, or trying multiple cuisines in one visit (from Italian to American to Mexican!). We stopped in for a quick lunch at around 2pm on a Wednesday; there was plenty of seating at high-top tables, and QR codes on paper menus make it easy to explore all the different food vendor options. It's also a fun activity to peruse the market, taking in different sights, smells, and flavors. All of us ended up opting for Schiacciatas (large Italian sandwiches that are a staple in Florence) from Massimiliano Parri, which all ended up ranging from €10-12, depending on toppings - yes, it's more expensive than what you'd get from a traditional schiacciateria, but you're also paying for the market's location and convenience. We appreciated the fact that they shave the meat right in front of you! My schiacciata came with freshly shaved ham atop crusty white bread, slathered with burrata cheese, and sprinkled with arugula and figs (I opted for no additional olive oil, since I found the ham quite rich already). I loved the contrast of textures and flavors, though I will say that the bread ended up cutting the roof of my mouth! All in all, Mercato Centrale is a bit touristy, but still miles better (and cheaper) than most "Italian" sandwich places you'd find in the US (pro tip: save your receipt for free use of their bathrooms). The variety can't be beaten, prices are reasonable for a central market, and it's steps from some of Florence's most iconic spots.
