The place is clean, the staff are friendly, and the service is quick. Everything came out as described. We also got a drink, and chose the green tea with mango, mixed with lemonade. I had lunch today at the Panera Bread in Victorville, and unfortunately, my first experience at this location was overshadowed by something I found extremely disturbing. Raquel, the cashier who assisted me, was fabulous. She was pleasant, professional, and provided excellent customer service. However, while I was in the middle of placing my order, another employee, whom I later learned was Claudia, the General Manager, approached Raquel and began speaking to her in an extremely rude, demeaning, and verbally abusive manner. Claudia loudly scolded Raquel about where bread had been placed, telling her, "Don't you ever put this bread like that back inside," while pointing toward an area behind the counter. When Raquel attempted to explain herself, Claudia cut her off and continued speaking to her disrespectfully. I then witnessed Claudia yell at a male employee as well. As a customer, it was extremely uncomfortable and upsetting to witness. But I want to be very clear: this is bigger than how an employee should be treated in front of customers. No human being should ever have to experience verbal abuse. I don't care who you are, what your position is, or what mistake may have been made. Every person deserves to be treated with dignity and respect. This is especially concerning because I later learned that Claudia is the General Manager. A general manager sets the tone for the workplace and is responsible for modeling appropriate leadership, professionalism, and communication. This goes far beyond customer-service training. Claudia would benefit from immediate training in respectful workplace communication, leadership and supervisory skills, conflict de-escalation, emotional intelligence, psychological safety, and appropriate employee coaching and corrective feedback. If an employee needs correction or redirection, that can and should be handled professionally and respectfully. Leadership does not require humiliation, intimidation, or verbal abuse. In my professional work, I address occupational burnout, compassion fatigue, vicarious trauma, and workplace wellness. Workplace culture matters, and leadership behavior matters. When employees are repeatedly exposed to hostile, demeaning, or intimidating behavior, it can contribute to an unhealthy work environment and occupational burnout. I sincerely hope Panera Bread takes this complaint seriously, speaks directly with the employees who were present, investigates Claudia's conduct, and takes appropriate corrective action. I will also be forwarding my concerns to Panera Bread's corporate office. And to Raquel: Thank you for remaining professional and kind while assisting me despite how you were being treated. After many times of visiting this location in different occasions, I can confidently say the establishment its good 7 times out of 10. In my opinion the food its really good! I have tried different items from the menu and most of the time I'm satisfied! The broccoli cheddar soup its so good and the chipotle avocado melt, its a perfect combination for any day! The establishment itself its well kept, tables are clean, employees are constantly checking the floor and the drink station. Sometimes it's dirty but it's understandable, the employees work hard! I did my on-line order, my driver had to wait an additional 20 minutes, so my food was cold when it arrived to me. And to top that off, I order the ciabatta dipper sandwich, no dip was in my bag. The bill was $10.55 including a dollar tip. For a plain toasted bagel w/honey cream cheese and a medium iced latte. At the time I placed the order, I asked the cashier where the restroom was. She pointed me in the direction. What she did not tell me was that a code was needed to enter. I had to walk back to the register and ask for the code, 1st issue! When my buzzer rang to alert me that my order was ready, I walked to the kitchen, and returned to my table, 20 seconds tops! My bagel was cool, 2nd issue! It was not even with a hint of warmth to slightly soften the cream cheese, 3rd issue! It was then that I looked at my receipt to realize my cream cheese order was wrong at the time that I placed the order with the cashier, 4th issue. One may think that after I had paid, I should have looked at my check to see that it was correct, however, that is not my job as a customer. The expectations of customers are that the employees are well-trained to even take the simplest of orders and ensure all is correct. Active listening, which includes taking in information, paraphrasing back with they understand, and asking questions to ensure they understand what is being said. Customer should not have the responsibility to make sure that a simple order is taken correctly. If this becomes the expectation of customers, then the employers should start paying us gratuities for doing the employee's job. Just feedback why you should never tip before you receive your order and a note to the employer to not make this option at the time of sale as it forces the customer into guilt and does not allow the employee to go the extra mile outside of their work responsibilities. read more
