Note: Anyone on the Atkins diet shouldn't even drive by the place, you might smell a freshly baked family of cobblestone muffins and give in. That being said, everyone else get with it, this place is great! I love to get there early grab a cup of joe, egg souffle and a muffie. The place is well lit with comfortable booths and there's free wifi floating around! I've had one lunch there and it was delicious. Also a lot of people forget they actually sell loafs of bread, they'll even put it into some robot machine behind the counter that'll chop it into perfect slices. Drop by and enjoy the carbs. Came here for lunch today. The whole ordering process was overly complicated - firstly, there's a guy letting you know which station is free to go order at - there are only three of them, I could have figured it out for myself - this isn't Fry's at 6pm on Christmas Eve. I ordered my sandwich and a lemonade. They gave me a pager and asked my name. Next, into the middle station where the person who had taken my order, gave me my lemonade by name. Then on to the final station, where roughly one minute after I initially ordered, my pager goes off around the same time as yet another member of staff called my name. Do they have some big problem with people stealing other people's orders or something?? I got the chipotle chicken sandwich, mainly 'cos it had bacon in it and recently I've been gravitating towards bacon - the sandwich was only meh, the chips (when asked when I wanted chips or an apple!) were meh and the lemonade was a bit watery and therefore rather meh too - and I was hungry again by about 4pm. One final oddity was the description of the chicken - I'm used to white meat only, free range etc., but I've never seen chicken described as anti-biotic free on a menu before. The sandwich was fresh, but mediocre. The real disappointment was the salad. The lettuce in the caesar salad looked tired and a bit sad. The three croutons were very lonely indeed. This place isn't cheap; unfortunately the value just isn't there. A clean and friendly location in a large shopping center with tons of parking. The staff was friendly and patient with our group as we decided what to order. Food tasted fresh and yummy and was delivered quickly to our table with a smile. The staff were quick to take things out of our way and clean up as things were consumed. TIP: A great place to grab a bite to eat before heading over to the SAP center / Shark Tank. Parking is easy and safe and the walk is maybe 0.5 miles (though a flashlight is recommended since the lights along the path were out recently). read more

I recently gave a shameless 'event' plug for SJ area Panera's last week, and I made my first visit to this one on Coleman. I was disappointed. My order was over $10, probably because I ordered a drink with half/half combo (they never gave me a cup!). The free samples were for their strawberry poppyseed salad, which I actually had to pay for. I am not upset about paying for my lunch, I realize the free sample gimic is just to get people in the door so they will buy more food, but all I got was a stale piece of bagel and microscopic cup of frozen lemonade. Yes, service was prompt and there was free wif-fi (BTW, is that really a draw these days with it available almost everywhere anyway, especially so close to downtown??). Woefully inept service aside (customer service came with eyerolls and sighs), their diverse menu is more hit than miss but further attempts in creativity would actually make this place more respectable. The eye-catching desserts and pastries are the first thing you'd notice walking in and gazing up you'd see a sizable menu offering soups, salads and sandwiches. I LOVE their French Onion soup. It is always so delicious and filling. They would get 5 starts but the place is always packed when I come and hard to find a table... but that DOES mean it is a good place (just kind of a pain when someone is working with their laptop at a table and you are just trying to get in for a quick bite to eat). Their Asian Chicken salad is great and they even do it without cilantro for me. The line always looks long but man do they get people in and the food out quickly. Went there a few weeks back and forgot to write about how insanely rude the manager was. I was on my way to the airport and decided to grab a bite. I ordered a bagel, then roughly 1.5 minutes later decided a parfait would be easier since I had to get going. I went immediately to the front and asked to change my order. I said I am so sorry but can I actually switch to a parfait, I'll of course pay the difference or whatever works The manager gave me MAJOR attitude saying "it's almost done already....." waiting for a long awkward pause as if that would change my mind? I said oh I'm sorry, is there any way to change it. He said "its fine" & turned his back to me. I walked back to my table having no idea if that meant I was getting a bagel or a parfait. So, I used to praise this place. Panera Bread, famous for their Healthiest Meals...LIES I tell ya, LIES! Their sandwiches are mediocre and tasteless...not to mention, one sandwich could cost you about 1000 calories or more! Not so healthy anymore are we? Their salads are worst. What's up with Panera Bread outlets and the '80's look of the place? They seriously need to modernize their design unless it's a retro thing. Unfortunately, the prices aren't all that retro. Had the pick 2 combo of .5 greek salad and .5 signature Italian combo sandwich. Not memorably good but wasn't horrible either. Regretfully, I had the espresso which was inexpensive at a buck and half but was terribly watered down. Next time, any place that uses automatic espresso machines, avoid ordering any espresso drink. As an aspiring breadmaker I will only review the bread which is as good as you can get in my opinion. I've had the ciabatta, french, white, wheat, and country and they have all been textbook examples of wonderful bread. I have yet to try the sesame semolina since it is always sold out when I go. 3rd visit: Oh my heavens, This morning, I just had a cranberry and walnut bagel with hazelnut cream cheese (they were out of honey walnut cream cheese, pooh). The bagel had a nice zing and tang to it from the cranberries and also a nuttiness and crunchiness from the walnuts. The cream cheese, even though it came in a presealed, prepackaged container (made me doubt whether it was fresh or not), had an touch of air and lightness to it. Perhaps the bagel during my first visit came from a bad batch. 2nd visit: I am updating my review from three stars to four. I had their spinach and egg souffle today for breakfast. It was really tasty. The pastry was nicely done and the filling was full of flavor. I will defintately order this again. The only drawback is that they noted on the menu w/this item that they only make a certain amount for that day. 1st visit: Bagels there are dense and not fluffy, not as good as Noah's bagels. I went on a Sunday around 12 noon and dreaded going in to buy anything because the parking lot looked full but the bakery section wasn't too busy and there was space in the cafe. I don't really expect much from this place since it's a bakery/cafe, but I do like it. Especially since now we have a semi-decent, mostly clean, bakery-cafe with free wifi in the area. +1 Star because the managers try really hard. They're there everytime I go in and always ask how we're doing. How often do you see that? +1 Star because of free wireless. Spotty and slow sometimes, but sitll free! +1/2 Star because of the blueberry bagels. Warmed up (or not), they're yummy! +1/2 Star because of the Tuscan Chicken sandwich. Pretty decent, but even better when they grill it. (Thanks Panera employee for the suggestion!) But for those of you who haven't tried it, here are a couple tips: 1. I love Panera! How can you not like THE healthy alternative quick service restaurant - with fresh salads, soups and sandwiches, not to mention a mouth-watering bakery section. Came in today for lunch after a sweaty work out. When in doubt I turn to the half soup/half sandwich combo. Was lured by the signage for the Strawberry Poppyseed Salad - full of fruits (strawberries of course, blueberries, pineapple chunks, and mandarin oranges), pecans and a light dressing that doesn't make you feel like the work out was for nothing. As for the sandwich I rushed into ordering the Frontega Chicken Panini - rushed b/c I was still reading through all the ingredients. I was delighted by my choice though. Nice hot grill lines scored my buns (oh yeah) and oozy mozzarella on chicken, tomatoes and basil completed the taste. That was my treat! And you get a choice of chips (snack size potato), apple (usually a baby sized one and can vary on bruising depending on location), or hunk of fresh bread (great if you have soup). As soon as I came through their doors for lunch, I was impressed. I'm writing this review inside Panera as we speak. The first thing I noticed was a long line around 12:30 on a weekday. The line went from the register all the way to the entrance and the house was packed. I like to see a crowded restaurant, because it's quality is reassuring. I had the Fuji Apple Chicken Signature Salad. It had dehydrated slices of Fuji apple, pecans, and grilled white meat chicken. I'm beginning to think that all signature salads are served in the large bowls. The portions are very generous and the wait after you order is very short. I got my order in like three minutes of ordering it. I think the staff here is very efficient with four registers during lunch, people busing the tables, and someone does the quality control of the dishes before it goes out. Of all the Paneras I've been to, I think this is the best place for dining. I'm one of the only people on a laptop, everyone else is eating. I think the branch on Stevens Creek Blvd. is better for studying. The one in E. Hamilton falls below the bar set by both these Paneras. read more

This is a neighborhood place for my husband and I and we like to go here for quick meals or for a bite to eat in the morning. The food is especially yummy throughout the menu and the prices are fair. My husband is particularly fond of their pizzas, while I prefer the sandwiches (hot or cold). It's also great because it's across from the Guadalupe River Gardens and next to the newly completed trail, so it's easy to pop in after a run/walk/bike or grab some food and take our dog over to the park for lunch. Alright, so I gave them four stars merely because I've only ever gone there for one specific thing and nothing else... I'm absolutely IN LOVE with their egg soufles they are soooooo good! They have a spinach and artichoke one that I always get, verrrrry yummy! There's one with bacon and another one that is cheese. All of their pastries and bread look very yummy and they always have a little sample tray out for you to try while you're waiting in line. The line actually moves very fast and they only have one depending on the time you show up. If you're going for the egg soufle make sure you go in the morning otherwise they run out and you might make a scene when they tell you... not that I'm speaking from experience or anything... Their coffee is also good, they give you a cup and you pour your own. When you ask for your order "for there" it comes out on a plate or in a cute little box when it's "to go". They are also very homework and/or laptop friendly which is always a plus! They have regular tables and some plush chairs if you're just hanging out drinking some coffee... Hit or miss depending on what you order. The soups and turkey sandwich are usually really tasty and I can easily devour their clam chowder in a bread bow. The brownie is so rich, I have to share it with my boyfriend. Other the other hand, some stuff is not so good. I ordered the mushroom and mozzarella sandwich one time and both me and my mom agreed it was totally disgusting. The mushrooms were cold and slimy and the cheese was cold so instead of being nice and melted, it got all rubbery. Really disappointing. Also disappointing is the blueberry scone. I'm a frequent visitor to this location and the one in Fremont. The customer service is the best I've seen in a bakery store. The people are always friendly and joking with the customers. The attendants always keep the place clean and the food comes out super quick. The food quality is excellent. I especially love the summer corn soup and the salads. There isn't much quantity, but the food is just enough to fill you up for breakfast or lunch. The best thing about this place is the free WiFi available and the environment they create for business clients and students. I often see meetings being held here, guys in suits working on their laptops and students studying. Its a great place to work and study while grabbing a bit to eat. Totally chaotic service. Half the counter crew were all arguing instead of taking orders the other half were just vacant. I had to go back to the counter 4 times to get my latte - when I went up the third time the guy had forgotten all about my order. When I went back the fourth and final time he just handed it to me without a word of apology. We had completely finished our meals by that time so I ended up taking it to go. I don't usually leave one star but I felt like I needed to. I came in to eat and the cashier was very nice but after that it went downhill. I've always had the impression that the flavored waters they provided were complimentary but I was Incorrect. I felt embarrassed and bad when one worker informed me and while I understand they were only doing their job I didn't see any reason why they needed to out me in front of everyone. I felt embarrassed and uncomfortable after. It continued even after I sat down, the Manager Michael felt the need to come to my table and announce again my misunderstanding and in a rude tone. It left me with a bad memory and caused me not to enjoy my food. I hope they can work on their hospitality and understanding. This is definitely a great place for students or people who want to get some work done away from the house. I love the Chinese Chicken Salad. The paninis are pretty tasty, one of my faves is the turkey artichoke. Another plus is the fact that this location has free wireless, which definitely beats going to starbucks or borders. I like the fact that they have outlets to plug in your laptop located throughout the restaurant, so it really doesn't matter where you are sitting to get plugged in. read more
