A cut above the standard Panera. While the food and drinks are typical of Panera (yummy comfort foods), the staff here are top notch. While other stores have moved almost entirely to ordering at kiosks, this location consistently has staff available which is nice if customers have questions or prefer that human element. The woman who took my order was exceptionally friendly and helped me pick one of their new sandwiches (the cheesesteak). It was delicious. My only reluctance to give 5 stars with Panera is that it is more expensive than I would anticipate. I've heard it called "overpriced hospital food," and that critique holds some water. read more

Meh covers it. First, they have closed off the door to enter right near the handicapped spaces. Next, my green goddess salad with chicken at the price of nearly $15 was mediocre at best. The chicken is sliced very thin & has NO flavor. One of the cherry tomatoes tasted moldy. The greens were not cool & crispy & it was so lightly dressed that there was nary a green goddess flavor to be enjoyed. It arrived quickly enough so no complaints about that. The restaurant is very clean. Doubt I'd wander back in since there are plenty of other places to find a good lunch in the area. read more

I could by pass the rude staff earlier today for my rapid pick up today. The aggressive food poisoning my household is currently enduring from this meal is why I am writing this review. You would think a soup and sandwich is a safe choice. But my god, I have never vomited and out the other end, so violently in my life in such a short period of time. I rarely go to Panera when I lived in Houston as there are so many other choices. Besides, many of them have shut down before the pandemic. This Panera is less than 5 minutes from my home and it was my 1st time here. Got 1/2 chicken chipotle sandwich and 1/2 bowl of acorn squash soup with baguette. The soup was thick and creamy which I love. I ordered a bowl which should be bigger than a cup but the quantity was quite small. I started eating the sandwich and detected cilantro which I'm allergic. They made a fresh one without it. I'm giving a 3 stars because there was only 2 chunks of chicken in the 1/2 sandwich. Panera, you can do better than that! Anyhow, it was edible and fitted my need. They have daily fresh baked bread and pastries where I got one orange and one blueberry scone to go. Those scones are gigantic compared to the ones I had in Scotland and England. I always thought scones are bite sizes as they are quite filling. Pretty disappointing. $13.69 + tip for 1/2 salad and 1/2 sandwich. The sandwich was the steak and cheese and I think they forgot the steak. Or at least there was barely any on it. A dab in the middle with the 1 inch ends of the sandwich only having bread. Salad was fine, nothing special. In the end, I'm saddened that I spent this much money on a lacking lunch. Ugh. read more

Typically I've found this place (this location specifically) to be lacking. The wife loves it so she occasionally sends me out to grab soup from here, and each previous visit was irritating mostly because of the self important customers and their insistence that the phone call they are making the entire time of the visit is of dire consequence. Upon arrival and as I presented my list I was informed that the ONE item I wanted to try was no longer offered. So I asked for the French Onion Soup, because it's one thing I really have enjoyed. But it too has been discontinued. Two for two. Not good As it stands I've now been waiting for my order for the same time it's taken me to write to this point, and I'm the only person here. Not good. Order UP Drive home to eat. Cuban is pretty good, but needs some salt and spice imo. So I add some habanero sauce and finishing salt. Much tastier. But The 'but' is my afterthought. After finishing this sandwich as I realized I was looking forward to being done. It was nothing special. I saw the pickle, a couple in fact. But never tasted it. The meat wasn't great. In fact it wasn't even flavorful, it was dry and flat. At least the bread was crisp. Add similar seasoning to the baked potato soup and it's as I like it. Alone, it's a tad bland. That's the problem for me being that I require spice and then some. After a few more tastes I concluded that this isn't a recipe I need to decipher and create at home. My wife's squash soup is pretty good, a bit sweet to my taste, but a nice taste. Its important however that she seems to enjoy it. And her SW chicken salad looks really good, in fact it's better than my meal period. Overall, tonight I'm giving 4 stars up from my initial estimate of three. Because of the salad. I love Panera. Yes, they are a little more expensive, but you pay for top tier and high quality ingredients that are always fresh. I'm either chowing down on a sour dough crust half turkey and white cheddar sandwich and a bowl of tomato soup, or opting for the chicken noodle soup in a giant sour dough bread bowl. They're both so good. The bagels are always a good choice too, and if you're craving a coffee, go for the Madagascar Vanilla latte. I used to love this location! I accepted that rapid pick up was the best way to get lunch during the rush hour. Today I did just that. Got back to work. Ate my BBQ chicken flat bread, was half way through my salad and found a dead bug in my food. I called and asked for a full refund. They asked me to bring the salad back in. I'm at work! I shouldn't be spending more of my time and gas money to prove I have a dead bug. Thankfully they were willing to accept photos. Sorry, but i'll be crossing this place off my list for lunch and dinner going forward since I just can't do dead things. Despite my other issues with Panera, they remain my go-to bagel shop. The wife loves them. I'm finding that if you time things right, you can get what you're looking for. Once in a while they will run out of good bagels earlier than they should (imho), but that's business, I guess. I do enjoy toasting an Asiago bagel and putting some butter on it. Plain and simple, but delish! Staff is friendly and the place is clean. If you *need* bagels - call ahead or be early. read more

I've frequented the two west-side Paneras in Madison for years. These two places are my go-tos for morning coffee and breakfast, an excuse to get out of the house and get some light work done as I enjoy the morning. Of the two, the Junction Road store manages to keep the bar low and continues to exceed my now-consistent negative expectations. This morning, as in past visits, the line to order was long (6 people) with just one cash register open, and multiple ordering extensive to-go orders. Once I patiently waited for my turn and made my order, both the coffee urns for unflavored regular coffee (medium and dark roast) were empty. This store is also consistently unkept looking and moderately disheveled. Though it's a bit closer to my house, I am done with the Junction Road location. Panera, you can do better. read more

I don't know why I keep trying Panera when despite what location I go to, I get horrible service and long wait times for a small amount of expensive food. A little bit ago I used the online order for speedy pickup. I ordered it at 11:45am to be ready at the selected time of 12:30pm. The site has you select the ready time, so you would assume you'd get there at or around that time and it would be ready, right? Well, nope. I waited another 15 minutes after getting there to find my order not on the ready for pickup shelf before flagging someone down behind the lines to ask where my food was. They of course didn't know. They told me to wait while they checked and that, I kid you not, I should have expected this because they are always too busy at this time to fulfill orders on time. Wow. Anyway, you pick your food up from an unattended area where other people's food is waiting. Apparently someone had taken mine. They made it again, didn't apologize, and didn't offer money off or a discount at my next visit. If you're this damn busy that you can't give us good customer service AND you can't keep track of people stealing food, HIRE MORE PEOPLE. Seriously. Wow. read more

Worst experience Peter and another employee were bantering back and forth as I was giving him our order, this was the first time we had been there. Peter came around the counter handed me my bag and I left, after walking home I saw I didn't have my whole order. I went back and told Peter I was missing my bagel. Ordered online for rapid pick up from this location at 7:00am for a work meeting at 8:30. I ordered 12 bagels and 6 fruit cups. I came for pick up at 8:10 and the food wasn't ready. After 10 minutes of waiting for someone to help, the manager told me they hadn't even started my order yet. There were many other customers that also ordered pick up that were standing around waiting. I finally received my order just after 8:30 and showed up late for the meeting that I was hosting. The food was goodish- what you expect from Panera. That said, there are many other quality breakfast spots that would appreciate the business. I will not return to this location and I would absolutely not recommend that others order carry out here. Timely service is not a focus of this location. read more

Panera as a company has really come a long way! First off, love that they have higher quality ingredients now (no artificial sweeteners, preservatives, etc). Other improvements from over the years: -more vegetarian/vegan options (the bread bowls and strawberry poppyseed salad have become my favorites I've gone in for frequently). -delivery of food to your table, no more standing waiting for your buzzer to go off -variety of non-soda drinks like their natural sweet teas in delicious flavors Only thing that's bugged me is multiple times (and at various locations) I order a salad without chicken and it still comes with chicken. Picking it off wouldn't ordinarily be a big deal but there are many little pieces that fall through to the bottom and are basically throughout the whole salad making it a constant pick while eating. I started politely sending them back after settling for it wrong once--too much work but hate to waste food since I'm sure they dump it. I know it's an unusual request to ask for no chicken/meat, and may just slip by kitchen staff, but better communication of special requests would be nice. All in all, I love Panera! read more

Had a great experience at Panera in Madison today. I had difficulties with placing an online order and was running short on time due to limited lunch break. I called the store and a very pleasant employee offered to get the order done ahead of time then i could pay in person when i picked it up. I go to the Junction rd location on my lunch break and get the Mediterranean Veggie Sandwich. The sandwich is always delicious with a generous amount of fresh tasting ingredients. BUT, honestly the reason for the 5 stars is because of the customer service I get from Alyssa. She is always in a great mood and offers friendly conversation. Just wanted to give a positive review for this particular Panera. We had a group of 20 hockey girls and parents come in from Chicago for lunch in between games. We ordered ahead and by the time we arrived, everything was all set for us. The only thing was names weren't put on the individual lunches, so we had to sort it all out. Not the worst of things, but 20 hungry hockey players had to wait a little bit longer. What made me appreciate them even more, was an employee, I assume a manager, came and offered everyone a cookie. I am officially writing this location off. I used to work nearby, and ordered lunch using rapid pick-up on a fairly regular basis. I highly recommend double checking that you have everything in your order if you use this option, because there was usually about an 80-90% chance that something in my order would be missing or incorrect. Today my husband and I risked it and placed a rapid pick-up order. My soup was missing the croutons it was supposed to come with. He ordered the chipotle chicken AVOCADO melt and I ordered the roasted turkey and AVOCADO BLT. Can you guess which ingredient was missing from both sandwiches? You guessed it - AVOCADO! Additionally, our to-go order was missing napkins and utensils. Not a huge deal since we were taking our food home, but could really be an inconvenience for someone trying to eat on the go. Panera, here are my tips for you: If there is a spot on your rapid pick-up receipts for someone to sign off that they've double checked an order, you should probably be using it. If a menu item lists an ingredient in its name, you may want to make sure that ingredient is actually included. read more

Talk about fast service! A lot of previous reviews suggest that this location has mastered the quick lunch. Though I'm not used to it, it is always appreciated when I need to eat and go. I had a negative experience the last time because I wanted to take my time and think about what I wanted to order. Disclaimer: Do not do that during lunch hour! I had a great lunch because I knew what I wanted and got it in minutes. I did what I promised: I came back and tried this location when it wasn't as busy. And I had a pretty good lunch. They didn't mess up any orders this time, and the woman who took my order took her time and didn't try to get rid of me right away. Ordered online for delivery for four breakfast sandwiches. I placed the order at 7:40. Estimated delivery was 30 - 40 minutes. At 8:30, almost an hour later I called expecting to hear that my food was on the way. I reached the manager who told me the food was ready but the driver hadn't gone out with it yet. When I asked, I was told that he didn't think my food would be cold because it would be going out very soon. Finally received my order at 9:10, cold and hard from sitting out, not being kept at a safe temperature. This is not the first time this location has had issues, but it will be the last time I order from this location. I highly encourage people to avoid online ordering from this location. Ordered a pick 2 option from here. The food was regular Panera quality but the service was lacking. I had ordered and was waiting for my food when I overheard the person making my food and the guy busing tables talking about my meal. They said my food was "nasty" while I continued to wait barely two feet away. They specifically indicated my meal choice when talking about it and we're not quiet about it either. When I got home, my husband saw that I was upset and tried calling to ask the manager if he could tell his staff not to negatively talk about the food they are making right in front of the customer. The manager said we must have misheard but that he would talk to them. He did offer to send a coupon in the mail but we didn't want that. I would give this place one more star if they didn't discontinue the IC Spice drinks. Grr. They were good. This is a good place to get a cup of soup or a sandwich.
