When I lived in South Hills, I ate at Panera Bread frequently. Pretty much the same reason that I shopped at Target - it made me feel like a "fancy grown up". After I moved back to Fayette County, there were just so many other restaurants to eat at whenever I made the drive to Southridge. Now, our new central office is located in South Charleston. I got a coupon via email for a free half salad or sandwich with the purchase of their new half or whole Chipotle Chicken and Avo Melt. So, I figured "why not?!?" I decided to download the Panera Bread app and check out the NEW menu. I got a half chicken melt and then a half Italiano (also new) and a pop for $13. That's really good for Panera Bread. That's cheaper than eating Subway (which really isn't that cheap anymore) or Jersey Mike's. Panera is a place that I have used more than once (OK, way more than once) to bring some food to an early morning business meeting to give that meeting a bit of a jumpstart and get everyone in a good mood and maybe (hopefully) be a bit more attentive. My go-to item to bring to these meetings is bagels with cream cheese. Being from New Jersey, I am a huge fan of bagels and while the bagels at Panera cannot compare to the great Jersey bagel shops, they are pretty good and to paraphrase Dorothy in "The Wizard of Oz" we ain't in New Jersey. I would definitely recommend their bagels, but cannot really comment too much on their lunch items as this place, at least for me, is more about breakfast than anything else. Ordered a simple BLT and cappuccino. The coffee was very good however the sandwich was a ripoff. Two very thin slices of Roma diameter tomato, one small leaf of lettuce and small piece of bacon. Most times I've been here everything has been delicious and perfect. The one time things took a little longer than expected due a minor mistake, the manager caught the issue and fixed it immediately, and was super nice about it too. Typical over priced good food great atmosphere but if you have to wait over an hour for your order to become ready then there should at least be a monitor or yelp list to show you where you are on the list. Don't waste your money! I ordered online for delivery with Door Dash (free delivery for first 30 days). The delivery worked great. The food was a huge disappointment! I ordered a salad, 2 sandwiches, and a bread bowl soup. Not cheap, not even close! The sandwiches were sloppily made, falling apart, very light on ingredients, the wrong ingredients, and were not tasty. The soup had more liquid than ingredients and the shredded chicken was non existent! It had the taste of pure salt. My only comment was, a can of soup would be better! The bread bowl didn't make the trip, but a hard, cold, stale, torn into two pieces "baguette" was thrown in the bag (loose) on top of the plastic utensils! All of the food sucked. This is not the Panera Bread of the past! Supporting our restaurants is a good thing. However, they have to do their part to. An apology wouldn't cut it, a refund would! I was more or less trapped in the area for 2 nights, and Panera was my only reasonably nearby choice. The first meal consisted of dry bread and mystery meat. Terrible. The meat was tasteless and the bread was dry and tasteless. For the second night, I got a pastrami sandwich and, for backup, a grilled cheese sandwich for take out (who can screw up a grilled cheese, right?) I ended up leaving the pastrami sandwich on the table after only 2 bites. Back at my hotel room, I eagerly dove into the grilled cheese and dove right back out again. The sandwich consisted of 2 slices of dry bread with an unmelted piece of cheese between them. For supper, I ended up eating peanut butter crackers from the vending machine and counted myself lucky for that. Never, ever again will I chance a Panera. This Panera Bread was average. The customer service was nothing to brag about. The food was good. Serving sizes were ample and salads appeared fresh. Our Cobb salad had more chicken than what we usually receive in the same salad near home. Pleasant surprise.
