My F.O.O.D. Review: Poke Hana -- Brentwood, CA…read more
F -- First Impression
Walking into Poke Hana, the first thing that caught my attention was the bright, welcoming atmosphere. There's a beautiful floral wall with a neon sign that reads "Good Food, Good Mood," and honestly, it sets the tone perfectly.
The restaurant is spacious, clean, and filled with greenery. I especially liked how that same visual theme carries over into their digital menu displays, where the greenery becomes part of the backdrop. It gives the space a fresh, modern feel without trying too hard.
O -- Ordering Experience
The ordering process was easy to follow, and the line moved smoothly. The staff was friendly, helpful, and more than willing to make suggestions, which I appreciated as a first-time customer.
One thing that made the experience even easier was how well everything was labeled. From the proteins and toppings to the sauces and add-ons, I never felt like I had to guess what I was choosing.
There are also plenty of options beyond poke bowls, including Maki Rolls, Miso Soup, Musubi, Crispy Rice, and other sides.
O -- Overall Taste & Quality
My wife and I both ordered Regular Poke Bowls with two scoops of protein. I went with Ahi Tuna and Salmon over a Sushi Rice base, then added crab meat, seaweed salad, cucumber, and green onion.
For sauces, I went with their House Poke Sauce, Citrus Ponzu, and Spicy Mayo, then topped everything with masago, Furikake, and crispy onions.
As I watched my bowl being assembled, I was genuinely impressed by the portions. They did not skimp on the ingredients.
Everything looked fresh, and the combination of flavors and textures came together really well. The bowl was so filling that I was already feeling satisfied before I was even halfway through it.
And something I really appreciated: there were several additions that didn't come with the kind of extra charges you sometimes see at other poke spots. Avocado and seaweed salad were included without an upcharge, and even the rice options didn't feel like an opportunity to nickel-and-dime the customer.
That made the overall value even better.
D -- Dining Experience
We decided to dine in, and the experience was just as enjoyable as the food. Afterward, my wife and I walked around and did some local shopping nearby, which made it a nice little after-work outing.
Poke Hana also offers a 15% First Responder discount with a free drink, which was a really appreciated touch. The service and our First time experience was so good, that we ended up putting those savings right back into the tip.
This was our first visit, and it definitely won't be our last.
The "Hana" Connection
Here's the part that made this visit even more memorable.
My wife and I didn't want to cook after work, so we decided to try Poke Hana for the first time. At first, I thought the name Hana might have been a play on the Hawaiian word ʻohana--family.
But my wife, who was born in Hawaiʻi and studies the Hawaiian language (ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi), pointed out something I hadn't considered:
Hana means work, task, or craft--and "pau hana" refers to the end of the workday, or after work.
And suddenly, the name felt like it was made for our visit.
We had just finished a day's work, didn't feel like cooking, and ended up sitting down to a freshly "crafted" poke bowl.
So here's my new way of putting it:
"Poke Hana is my favorite kind of 'pau hana'--the kind where a good day's work ends with a really good bowl."
Or, even simpler:
"After a good day's hana, there's nothing better than a little Poke Hana."
Either way, I think we found our new pau hana spot.
Final Verdict
Fresh ingredients. Generous portions. Easy ordering. Friendly service. Great atmosphere. Fair pricing--and a First Responder discount to top it off.
Poke Hana is definitely worth a visit.
Would we go back? Absolutely.
