My wife and I had been long time Panda Express customers while we lived in Tucson, AZ, we were thrilled that there is one "near" where we live now. So, we made the half hour drive to the Pottstown location for lunch, as much for the nostalgia as from hunger. What to expect: Panda Express is sort of like a "Chinese" buffet restaurant, but with servers. The counters are behind a chin high glass barrier with several servers ready to fill your bowl, plate or dinner order. Everything is cooked fresh at the location and a new batch is started as soon as the container at the counter approaches a low point - so expect fresh food, freshly prepared. Is it traditional Chinese cooking, as in a traditional Chinese restaurant? No. Is it inspired by Asian cooking. Yes. Food: Very Good (for the most part) The spicy shrimp had just enough heat; Beijing beef was exactly what we expected from our past experience, quite good. Not so good: The Lo Mein at this location uses thinner noodles that we experienced for years in Tucson. My wife was disappointed, expecting something different. A quibble, and certainly not a deal breaker. I had a portion of broccoli and cabbage. The ingredients should be cut to bite size. Neither the broccoli nor the cabbage was cut to bite size. Guests are provided with a plastic fork (only), therefore no way to cut these to a comfortable size. This strikes me as a problem with prep cook training, and is easily fixed. My wife reported that the fried rice had no flavor. Service: Very good The staff seems to have the drill pretty much under control. I'd ordered two of my allotted plate servings and hesitated. The server asked if I'd prefer either the rice of the Lo/Chow Mein. When I said I had to avoid carbs, could I have something else instead, he motioned to the full counter. The one entre' and two sides policy is flexible, and very much "have it your way". From the customer point of view, the policy seems to be keep it moving and don't give the customers a hard time. Ambiance: Problem area This was my greatest disappointment. Background music in an eatery is generally a plus, but when you have to yell across the table, literally raise your voice to outside, across the parking lot on a windy day level, that's a little too much. The restaurant has no sound deadening features. Every surface, from the glass and metal of the counter to the Formica table tops, to the tiled floor is an acoustically reflective. Basically, what ever level the music is set at gets amplified and distorted by all the acoustic reflections leaving is an uncomfortable, even jarring environment to eat in. Perhaps the policy is "keep it loud so these customers get their food and get going". We endured the loudness because between the uncomfortable sound level or the half hour drive home and the food reheat, endurance seemed the lesser of two evils. In retrospect, I'm not totally convinced. This problem strikes me as the manager not being in control of the situation. I would love to give the location more stars. If I were doing a "hit and run' take out order, I'd probably give this Panda Express 4 stars. The food is generally quite good, fresh in every sense of the word. The portions are generous, the servers are friendly and helpful, but the sound level cost at least one star this time around. I wish this Panda every success and I look forward to seeing a Panda Express open a little closer to home! read more

Panda Express is a guilty pleasure when I want "fast food" that is a little bit different than pizza or burgers. I always go in with a game plan, knowing what I'm going to get - typically the Beijing beef, or a chicken dish like fire cracker chicken, or orange chicken. Nothing gourmet, but it hits the spot when I'm in a hurry. I was excited when this location was announced about a year ago. Since it opened, I've been there twice and unfortunately, this location is not quite ready for prime time. The first time I visited, the staff was overwhelmed, and the line was waiting for a Kitchen to finish preparing fresh entrees. The second time I visited, I had planned to use a coupon that I had received only to be told that the stores coupon reader was not working. OK, it sucks, but not the end of the world. I get to the end of the line only for them to tell me that they are only excepting exact change for cash transactions. Alrighty, I'll use my card. The food itself was not quite their best effort. It lacked some flavor and didn't quite match my usual expectations for panda express. (To be clear I'm not expecting gourmet, authentic Chinese food. But I've been to enough locations to have an idea of what it should taste like.) As I was finishing my meal, another long line began to form as people tried to order food. Unfortunately, the cash situation, or rather the lack of warning before someone reach the register, had created a backlog that the crew was unable to assist with trying to cover multiple bases. I saw a few people walk out and honestly the store was a bit of a hot mess between the service and having people to clean up trash that starting to overflow in the receptacles. It's very early in this restaurants, history, so I know they have time to turn it around. But there's definitely a lack of training and direction at this location that they're going to have to remedy if they want repeat customers. I'd fill out a survey that Panda Express sent me, but I don't really see the point because this location is unable to accept coupons and it would only end up expiring. I truly hope this location can figure it out, but it does bring a unique fast food option to the area. read more

The Panda Express people in Pottstown, PA only gave me my vegetables tonight skipping my two main courses. We used a delivery service and they were prompt. When I opened my order the main courses (2 different dishes) were not in it at all. When my mate called, the person there who answered the phone expected him to come to their sight to get a refund or the two missing dishes. His food would be cold if he took the time to go there. The items were on our invoice. Panda Express folk were impossible to deal with. We have had missteps from them before and this was over the top. Especially the attitude. Our relative manages one in GA and I can assure you knowing her she would find this action unacceptable. Even when she visits us, she is always in contact with her staff to see that things go smoothly. read more

I mean food was okay not great but pretty much what you should expect from fast food Chinese. What is frustrating is when you place an online order at 3:45 for a 5:15 pickup. You show up at 5:15 and see your order ticket on the counter.... Then get told they have to cook one of the items and it'll be about 7 minutes. Food and Service was excellent! I saw that a new manager took over just a few weeks ago. I'm here to say this new manager and the team have turned this place around! It was spotless inside. The wait time was less than 15 minutes and the staff was super friendly and accommodating! The food was absolutely delicious and hot! We're always looking for a different place to try , so I suggested going here since it was new and we thought we'd give it a shot. Can't say I'd ever go back. I got mushroom chicken, teriyaki chicken, and chow mein. The chow mein had no flavor at all, the chicken teriyaki looks delicious on the sign, with its white meat and nice pieces. All I got was fat, the meat looked dark and it was slimy. The chicken in the mushroom was nonexistent and was also fat. I took it up and told them, and the employees seemed confused, understaffed, she offered me a couple other options but most of the stuff is fried and I don't eat red meat. I ended up with string bean chicken and dumped it over the chow mein for flavor, that was edible, but still not great. Flavor was good however, barely any chicken.. all the nugs were the size of a penny aka all breading. Even the egg rolls were trash ): BUT on top of all this my husband and myself did not feel well after eating it and into the next day. (Usually we binge eat Chinese food but we didn't with Panda Express because it wasn't worth eating so we knew we weren't sick from over eating). You're honestly better off getting frozen Chinese food from the grocery store! Despite the modern marvel of technology that allows us to order ahead, it seems Panda Express adheres to a "queue first, tech second" philosophy. There it was, my order, not so much prepared as it was an afterthought, left to the side while walk-ins were served with the urgency of a new iPhone release. A gentle reminder that in the fast-food hierarchy, mobile orders are the peasants, only to be acknowledged in the absence of nobility--that is, the walk-in customers. So, if you fancy your chow mein with a side of existential dread over whether it will ever be made, by all means, Panda Express is your joint.
