If you told me a few weeks ago that I'd have Panda Express to thank for saving my life, I probably would've scoffed at you. Then again, when has this international chain NOT been there for me? Let me provide some more context. A few days ago, my girlfriend and I were making the drive down to Orange County from the South Bay Area. This was nothing really out of the ordinary - except for the fact that I had this brilliant idea of trying to eat at a place not named In-N-Out Burger. Well, that didn't go as planned. The first restaurant we drove to - Tita's Pupuseria - closed RIGHT WHEN WE GOT THERE (even though hours said otherwise). It was already 915pm, and with my girlfriend already losing her appetite + me scrambling to find an alternative, we were about to freak out. Luckily for us though, our saving grace was only 30 miles away: Panda Express (in Lebec)! We quickly sped there like an antelope escaping a cheetah, and we were able to make it right before the Panda Express closed. So how did this last-minute, late-night excursion turn out? SURPRISINGLY GOOD! --EXCELLENT VARIETY OF CHOICES-- Even though we came right when they were winding down/about to close up shop, there were still lots of options to choose from. For example, there were plenty of noodles, and the glistening Eggplant Tofu was begging to be picked up. Even better yet, the cook was still making food - despite it being almost 10pm at night! For example, seeing as we and the other customer next to us wanted Orange Chicken, they made us another batch! This was totally unexpected and very appreciated considering the fact that most places at this hour just gave you what's left! --DAMN DELICIOUS FOOD-- We ended up getting a 3-item plate (woah!) with Eggplant Tofu, Orange Chicken of course, and their Beef with Broccoli. Now I know this food ain't authentic (trust me, I hate bastardized, western versions of Chinese dishes), but gosh darn it I will defend Panda Express to my grave. Maybe it was because we were so hungry, but we loved our meal! First off, every item was fresh. The tofu was delicious, the beef was tender, and OMG THE CHICKEN SO CRISPY. I don't think I've personally ever had Orange Chicken that was this crunchy before. Second of all, portion size was HUGE. For ~$10, we had more than enough for 2 people. --SPACIOUS, CLEAN ATMOSPHERE-- When I think of "restaurants" along the Interstate-5, I imagine dirty and crowded places. Not here - this Panda Express was so clean and spacious! It was actually quite pleasant to be able to sit in a quiet setting while enjoying our much needed meal. --PRIME LOCATION-- Keep the I-5 in your head. How often have you had to settle for crummy fast food when driving up/down California? Probably more Taco Bells and McDonalds than you can count huh? Well the amazing thing about this Panda Express is that it's located in the HOTSPOT of dining/shopping while in the middle of nowhere. For example, around this restaurant there's also a Chipotle and even an Iron Skillet. Plus, Lebec is only 15 minutes away from The Outlets at Tejon! For refueling our stomachs with good quality food, to keeping it nice and clean, I have to give this Panda Express an "Omg, I'd travel 2 hours for this" rating. Waited for a good 40 minutes to get my food through the drive thru and I just opened it to see that they had my order wrong. I requested for chow mein, beef broccoli and black pepper chicken. I got the chow mein, orange chicken (which I ABSOLUTELY hate) and my black pepper chicken only had 2-3 pieces of chicken the rest was all celery. I used to really love PE, but it's overwhelmingly obvious that something has gone downhill in their QC operations. It's getting ever more common to find disappointing locations; this location is a prime example. Visited the restaurant at 11am, hoping to find fresh entrees. Not the case. The chicken in my first order seemed dangerously under-cooked...was like biting into gristle. I immediately took it back to the counter and asked for it to be exchanged for beef. Sadly, what was supposed to be beef had the texture of what I would expect road-kill to be like. Couldn't even bite through the meat in three attempts. I don't have the time nor the appetite left to take my second order back, so it looks like Panda has let me down once again. I've never been inside this particular Panda Express restaurant located at the Laval Road Truck exit off the I-5 freeway, but we've been through the drive through plenty of times while fortifying ourselves for a road trip South over the Grapevine. We've never had too long a wait to get our food at the drive through, and it's always been plenty hot when I received it. I've found the drive-thru staff particularly patient with us when four or five of us order from the car and want to pay separately once we get to the window. Yes, it's Americanized Chinese food but it's tasty and filling and easy to acquire without even leaving the car making it a consistent win when we're all voting for where to stop. read more

If you compare honey walnut shrimp to the one at a restaurant the prices are compatible. Since they're located before/after grapevine, they always end with drive safe which is really thoughtful. Everyone was sick of burgers (we were returning from a long road trip from Portland and Reno) so the consensus was to eat here. I dont know what it is exactly, but the food just seems...drier than at other panda expresses ive been to before.Everything I go, from the oddly named "Beijing beef" to potstickers, to the orange chicken and teriyaki(?) beef i tried were all overcooked and dried out. Even the chow mein was crispy. Ive never experienced that before, usually its just greasy not overcooked to the point of burnt. I think its due to the fact that if they make too much of something, they let it sit under heat lamps or reheat it. Even if im WRONG, thats what it tastes like. Another big flaw was the fact that walking in to this place felt like walking into an old western saloon from the movies. Its like our group of 6 walks in and everyone stopped and stared. Im thinking only locals were here that night, it was mid-week and it didnt look like too many people were in commute, and well, we were the only non-latinos in that night. There was this teenager who was really unapologetic about glaring me and my sister down as her insecurity forced her to nervously play with her cell phone and have a conversation on speakerphone for ALL to hear, like to prove to us she had friends. She was annoying, not even just to our group. Then there was another lady dining with an older gentleman who seemed to be her sugar daddy. We sat a few tables away from them and the chick could not stop staring, her eyes moving up and down our bodies. I swear we werent wearing anything too grunge-y or extravagant, just normal shirts and jeans....what's with the evil eye? It wouldnt have gotten to me this bad until me and my sister finally said aloud, "you know, its rude to stare". Then she kept whispering things to her geriatric boyfriend then laughing. At one point I think they called my mom fat before leaving. Here's the thing, our tables faced the window and they were parked right there. The bitch started having a fucking improv car show with her car. She randomly handed a camera to the old guy and posed with her GMC SUV (ooooh!) in a number of poses as her elderly boyfriend took pictures. We knew it was for us by the way they kept looking back at us through the window inbetween shots. Really? big guy took you on a date to panda express and now you will work the camera for him? pathetic Ok, Ok, i know i went too far with this story but that was really part of my experience here. I dont exactly like doing reviews on chains but this experience so so unique to any panda express ive EVER been to, yeah, i had to tell the story. Bottom line, if you want to eat dried out food, sub-standard to that of even most panda express (which is really saying a lot) AND eat it among some very rude and insecure grape-pickers, come on in on a weeknight. If you're craving chinese food, then Panda Express is a good option when traveling on the road. All the locations are consistent when it comes to the food. It all tastes the same to me. I do not have a favorite entree at Panda Express. I tend to get whatever looks the freshest, fullest, and has some vegetables. I always get chow mein instead of rice for the 2-entree combo. Only real complaint is that they do not have desserts. A meal is not complete without dessert (according to me). The prices are reasonable and the portions are fair. This location was packed inside, and I was fortunate to find a parking spot right in front. Of course, it seemed like all the fast food places at this Laval Rd. exit off the I-5 were really busy. Hours of operations state 9:30 am. All the doors are locked and a worker comes out to let me know they won't open until 10 am. I come back at 10, the doors are unlocked but the workers inside say they won't be serving food until after 10:30 because they still have to make it. So, given that Panda Express is pretty much the only so-called fast food that my family can agree upon, we're gradually becoming something of Panda Express officionados. The first thing you should know about this place, which is conveniently located at the north base of the Grapevine, is that the actual design of the traffic flow on this entire exit is just plain abysmal. Whoever designed the infrastructure for getting on and off this exit should be made to go here and use it for him or herself -- trust me, that would be punishment enough. As far as this location is concerned, when we arrived, there was about 15 people ahead of us in line, which didn't concern me for two reasons. One, lots of people guarantees that the food will be fresh (that is, at least the orange chicken will be fresh, while the other entrees sit there praying for someone to order them). Two, I counted no less than 11 employees scurrying behind the counter, which I also took to be a good sign. Unfortunately, I soon realized that 9 of the 11 employees were cooking or servicing the drive-through, which meant that our line got all bottle-necked up. [Ever notice how everyone becomes an operations expert when they're standing in line?] Four stars because we like the Panda, but minus one for annoying inconveniences in getting in and out of there when trying to make decent time on a road trip. I was working on the way down and needed to recharge my laptop. I asked the employee if I could charge my laptop while we ate.
