Came back to Pancho's Mexican Buffet recently and honestly it felt like stepping straight into childhood. Let's be clear right away. This is Tex Mex. I'm not going to sit here and tell you this is the most authentic Mexican food you'll ever have. It's definitely Americanized. But you know what? The food is actually really good. We ended up coming here partly because it was a childhood staple for us and partly because a TikToker @Ugh_Madison, spent an entire day here in one of her videos and it reminded us how much we used to love this place. The line was almost out the door when we got there but somehow we barely waited. The staff moved everyone through quickly and the whole place ran like a well oiled machine. The restaurant was clean, the service was amazing, and food kept coming out fast. Flavor wise everything was very savory and satisfying. My absolute favorite thing was the chicharrón. It was honestly delicious and tasted the most authentic out of everything we tried. Our other favorites were the white chicken enchiladas, the tamales, and of course the sopapillas. The price is honestly great for how much food you get and they also have a surprisingly good non alcoholic drink selection. Overall it was such a fun nostalgic experience and the food still holds up. I was on the north side of town and decided to stop at Pancho's because of nostalgia. The picadillo, chile soup and crunchy tacos were my favs. Everything else tasted the same. They also bought out our sopapillas 5 minutes after we sat down so they weren't warm when we were ready to dig in. Is this the best Mexican food I ever ate? No, but it's the most nostalgic. I grew up in Houston and got to raise the flag many times. Now, 27 years later we I returned with my own kids. The service was great and our server promptly attended to our raised flag. Honestly, more restaurants should have a clear signal to servers. The atmosphere is covered with Mexican decorations and folklore. The best part is the endless sopapillas! My kids say they want to go back tomorrow. For those who may have never eaten at Pancho's, you start by going through a line, cafeteria style. Servers load your plate initially. Once seated, you simple raise your flag at the table, and your table server will come over. Simple ask for more of anything you'd like and they bring it straight to you. Tamales, multiple enchiladas offerings, calabacitas, rice, beans, taquitos, flautas, tostadas, stew, chili rellenos, and more that I can't remember. It's really kind of sad because I remember poncho's Mexican buffet being very common in the greater Houston area in the 80s and 90s. The service was excellent. Everybody that we came across was very welcoming and accommodating. There were quite a few people there and it seems like a place that you would go to if you want to feed a bunch of little ones or you have more than two or three in your party. Unfortunately, I didn't really think the food was that great. The only thing that I found halfway decent was the tamales in terms of flavor. Well, the Mexican rice was good, but it's extremely dry. The food, though, was not worth $20... maybe $10-12, because it really wasn't good enough to warrant seconds. The cheese on the enchiladas and for the chips was so watered down, I'd hardly call it cheese, and pretty much everything else wasn't good enough to mention. ***Realize that these four stars are for Pancho's--this is NOT the same four stars for a fine dining restaurant. This is the only remaining location in the Houston area, and thank goodness for it. The manager is a polite, soft-spoken, helpful, and professional gentleman. Our waitress was such a good mind-reader that we never had to "raise the flag". The food was exactly what we want from Pancho's. All of the standard items were fresh and tasted like they should (exceptions to this are the "stew-type" dishes such as picadillo which were are way too watery). Came more for the nostalgia than anything else. Location is reasonable and there is no wait. I like the style of the high chairs, so the kids had a blast. Went through the line and picked through what I thought was most enticing, which seemed a bit slim to me. Got overcharged, and it turned out that they automatically charge for drinks even if you get water. We argued it and got cash back, but got a scolding that we have to reiterate that we don't want a drink. Seems a bit weird that it's default. Anyway, service is pretty good and we didn't have any problems getting what we wanted, even if there weren't that many great options. I think we ate more desserts than anything else. The manager was extremely unprofessional and out right rude. I placed a large order for which I had an Order Number and a credit card transaction. He reported he had no order, despite me showing him the multiple messages related to the order, including a message stating order received, confirmed and ready for pick up. Now have a message stating order complete, even though I never picked up anything or got any food. It was the Grande Pack and several other items for my staff. I called the CC company on speaker phone, and they verified the transaction was processed. He then walked away and would not speak to me anymore. I left with no food and filed a dispute for the charge. Yet, my account shows the order as picked up. He says they have no way to verify of check for an order in their own system. read more

In many ways, Panchos Mexican buffet is like your typical Tex-Mex restaurant. It has an assortment of enchiladas, tamales, beans, rice, soups, and stews. What sets Panchos apart from other Tex-Mex restaurants is the fact that is a buffet with service meaning if you decide you didn't get enough of a food item, just raised the flag on the table. Someone on the wait staff will refill that item. Of course specialty items like fajitas are available. But not on the buffet as but a straight menu order. Pancho's advertises Senior discount on Monday's and Tuesday's but does not abide by it. The first time we went on a Monday they charged full price, so I thought that maybe I should ask for senior discount. Today we went and my wife told the cashier that we were senior's but when I checked my receipt later it was the full price. O K it's only a $2 discount per plate but they advertise it at the end of the line. Don't trust this management to follow their ads. Inside is nice with lots of seating and authentic feel. The service was very nice and fast. I feel like the food is a hit or a miss. Some food is going to be super good while the others was missed out on. The taquitos we got were great. Along with the cheese sauce on top. The white chicken enchiladas were really good. The macaroni just tasted bland and like it was mass made with a watery cheese sauce. The salsa and guac were pretty watered down. They do have a little salad bar area with pasta salads and veggies. But if you're like me and grew up with Panchos, and even got one of their glasses at home like I do, well you'll know how 7 days without Pachos makes one weak. Dang. This place brought back memories. Fond memories. In my young days when I could kill it and do some real damage, we used to raise the flag as soon as we got seated to not waste time. But now in my older days I can't eat as much. So we enjoyed what we had carried to our table first, and then only ended up raising the flag once more for a second round of tacos. Well, ok we did it again for those toasty hot Sopaipillas at the end. But that's a given. Raising that flag gave me goosebumps. Flashback to the 80's. It was so much fun that I just kept raising it throughout the meal for kicks when the waitress wasn't around. "10 more tacos with everything! Mucho gracias". The chili rellenos and flautas were just like I remembered them - drenched in cheese sauce like we did it as kids. And the chips and taco shells were all super crunchy and fresh. My husband grew up eating here, so it is definitely five stars for him. It's all you can eat mexican food. The quality of the food is okay. I don't eat meat, but there are still options for me. The cheese chile rellenos are weird, but good. I like to have everything covered in cheese sauce. You go through the buffet line, and then if you want seconds of anything, you ask a waiter, and get their attention by raising a mexican flag on your table. I love that they have a buffet style food and you can try all. The food is mainly Tex mex. The sopapillas are the best hand down. They are selling themselves short! Food chosen overpriced but customer service WORSE! Undocumented persons serving food and cashier called me Gringo, and a Spanish sex slur can't write here. Yes, did NOT appreciate hostility put on a paying customer. After several minutes unable to enjoy my meal, left. Can see why other Panchos in Texas went out of business. Don't waste your time or money. No one was there to serve the food or at cashiers stand initially when I arrived even though it was open and around 1:30pm. They finally came and the food on line looked to have been sitting out a while they barely put much food onto my plate at all the bare minimum.. The signs posted are incorrect for weekends rates buffet was $14.99 for 1 adult, drinks are separate $3 each, with taxes and only buying my daughter a drink as she only eats chips there was $28. I asked the cashier who was rude why the sign said $11.99 buffet and she said it was higher on the weekend....When the stranger behind me heard my total he told me next time to take my baby and myself to Pappasitos it would've been cheaper he griped at her and was mad about the separate drink charges not included in buffet and Childs drink being so costly.. When asked what he was drinking he told her water or whatever was free !! For what I got I don't think it was anywhere near worth the cost. The restaurants furniture was old needing replaced, the salad bars options were decent. The waitress who refilled drinks, and chips was nice and quick, but the flag and entire housing of it was nasty and gross looking nothing magical at raising the flag I didn't want my kid to touch it !! I saw a couple of reviews complaining that Pancho's is not "authentic Mexican food" so I decided to write my Yelp review If you want "authentic Mexican food" go to Mexico If you want good Tex Mex food and good service in a clean restaurant and nice atmosphere the go to Pancho's I hadn't been to Pancho's in years and it was better than I remembered on every level. I've eaten at this panchos twice in the month, Tonight being the most recent trip. They were busy tonight and out of cheese enchiladas again. They made more but I didn't ask for a refill. The food was fresher than last time and the credit card machine was working unlike last time. I just love their food. The nostalgia is probably why but since I go to humble so much I figure I should make a trip of it. This location is larger than the one I grew up going to on long point.
