A group of friends stopped here for dinner on a Saturday night and it was packed so we had to wait about a 1/2 hour for a table which is ok because there is a bar 2 doors down to kill some. The place is small and loud with bright colors and art work all over the walls. The menu isn't huge with starters, bbq, burgers, sandwiches, entrees etc with specials that change. When you walk in you are hit with the amazing bbq smell so real smoking is going on in the back and after carefully looking over the menu with all the good items I opted for the Deacon which is smoked brisket, bacon, cheddar cheese which comes with frys. I personally didn't like any of the bbq sauces on the table which is ok because I like naked smoked meats. The brisket sandwich was very good on a fresh roll with melty cheddar cheese and if a couple onion rings were topped this would be next level for the sandwich. The brisket was tender but not melt in your with a nice pink smoke ring but way too lean, see my pictures because I would have like to have a little more fat for flavor. The frys looked house cut and and pretty good. The rib platter at the other looked pretty F'n good by the way. Overall this was a nice place to get some bbq in downtown Monroe but be prepared to wait for a table at peak times because it's very popular. read more

Wow, wow, wow. I m a foodie, and live in the tosa near Milwaukee, so no shortage of food options. But this place is fire. The food is AMAZINGLY good. It was too good for me to not leave a review. A coworker referred it to me, I was hesitant for awhile but finally decided to get dinner here one evening. Long story short, I was back there eating 3 more times before leaving the Monroe area. We have never had a complete dining experience as consistent and pleasant as this one. We have kept returning here since it opened. The skill and time spent in developing the flavors of this food is remarkable. The staff remembers us and is always pleasant and alert and accommodating. The homey, relaxed atmosphere is inviting. While on a day trip to Monroe, we decided on Pancho & Lefty's by the smell. A good one, obviously - barbecued meats. There was a bit of wait so we put our name in, then enjoyed walking around the town square while we waiting for a table to come open. Service was quick, friendly, and attentive without being too much. The menu is pretty large for a cozy establishment and it was hard to pick what to try. Neither my boyfriend nor I had eaten yet that day, so we started with an order of sweet potato fries. The fries appeared hand cut and were cooked perfectly - crispy exteriors with creamy insides. A lot of sweet potato items suffer from being undercooked, and these were just right. The red chili mayo dipping sauce was a nice balance to the sweetness of the fry. For main dishes, my boyfriend got the Kundert burrito (served with a surprise side of fries - not sure if that's standard or just a happy kitchen accident) and I went for its sandwich counterpart, the Pig on Pig. Tender pulled pork, crispy (by request) thick-cut bacon, cheddar cheese, barbecue sauce, and a side of regular fries and coleslaw. The sandwich was really tasty, decadent without being overly rich, and big enough that for me it was two small meals. The regular fries were good too, but definitely spring for the sweet potato if you don't get them as a starter. One of the only drawbacks was that it's a cash-only establishment. We had enough cash on hand, and there is an ATM on site, but more often than not I've only got a few bucks in my wallet. The food was very affordable, though, so the cash-only aspect may have a hand in this. If I find myself in Monroe again I wouldn't hesitate to stop in for another lunch! read more

So this place is sort of a staple of Monroe. Some people call this a Tex-Mex some people call it Southwestern Bar food. I'll say that its Midwest Comfort Food with a Southwest Flair. First off, you can't help but love this place, great for beer, great for kids, great for dinner all while adding is little weird quirks. The food is really good, closer to homemade than authentic, but it has the feel of something your mom or grandmother would make and it tastes wonderful, everything from the Burritos to the Burgers are great and savory, like someone made it exactly how you like it. They are chased down with a decent selection of beer, that are always ice cold. The kids love the chicken strips and you'll probably sneak some bites because their that good. Now for what you have to expect when you show up at Pancho and Lefty's: You're going to wait. Deal with it. They really try to accommodate everyone, but they aren't about to ask you to leave once you're done with your meal. They are cash only, this bugs me, but there is an ATM in the corner and at the end of the day I really don't mind all that much. This place is pretty small, and they're going to squeeze you in. The wife and I stopped here for lunch while on a motorcycle trip for lunch. This a great little place in a great little town. The food was awesome and so was the service. We had chilli cheese fries that had the best chilli the wife and I have ever had - really over the top. I had the BBQ sampler platter which was also very tasty and a lot of food. Gave us some time to walk around the area great, stores and points of interest... phone rang we'll ahead of schedule. We sat down and had prompt service from our waitress (Nicole ) ordered fried pickles (delicious) for our main dish we both ordered the pulled pork with mac and cheese also delicious! Our waitress also took the time to explain the history behind the building , very interesting... we will be enjoying a great meal again here when we're back in the Monroe area . We waited about 30 minutes on Saturday afternoon around 2:30. We were told it would be about 15-20 minutes. First, we ordered our drinks and the Chili Cheese Fries. The chili was a bit watery and just looked like beans and meat. It had good flavor though. The cheese was a mixture of melted cheese on too and some cheese sauce on the bottom. I prefer real cheese and not cheese sauce. Chili Cheese Fries - 3.5 out 5. Next, we ordered our meal. I had The Deacon, which is Smoked Brisket and bacon with cheddar. It was delicious! This is the best brisket I've ever had and was easily worth the $10.50. Smoked to perfection with 2 strips of thick bacon, topped with sliced cheddar. Delicious! The Deacon - 5 out of 5 I also upgraded to the Mac and cheese with my meal. It was very good, but I've had better. It comes with bacon, peppers, and onions. It is topped with melted cheese. Again, very good, but I've had better. Mac and Cheese - 4 out of 5 My wife had the Braised Sirloin Quesadilla. She loved the flavor and said we would be coming back so she could try everything else, so I'm guessing she really liked it. Braised Sirloin Quesadilla - 5 out of 5 The ambience is lacking and the fact that they don't take debit or credit is daunting in this day and age, but doesn't hurt them much. Restaurant - 4 out of 5 The service was lacking a bit. We only saw out waitress about 4 times total and for such a small place, that wasn't enough. My water sat empty for well over 5 minutes before another waitress noticed it was empty. Service - 3 out of 5 Overall, I'd give them a 4 out of 5. The food is exceptional and the best you will find in Monroe, but the service, ambience, wait times, and the lack of card payments really takes away from my total enjoyment. The service was fantastic, even with the wait we were able to find things to do, we started with the pulled pork nachos, they were great, however their menu doesn't tell all info ok the food, and for someone that has severe allergies, that is very important, my husband ordered a burger and said it was delicious, I ordered the burrito bowl, and it was overly filled with queso that it was more soup than a mea, I couldn't even eat it to enjoy it, which also wasn't in the description on their menu. My only suggestion is full disclosure for people who come from out of town and it regulars to know what we gave to omit or not order due to allergies. This made for a very long ride home for me, with several stops along the way, making our nice day out miserable. read more

This is one of the best restaurants in town. It's easily my fiancé's favorite restaurant anywhere. We don't even look at the menu anymore-she always gets the burrito bowl and I usually get a brat or "The Popper" (a massive quesadilla with jalapeños). The service is great. Couple downsides, but they're worth it. It's cash only. They do have an ATM inside, but there's a charge for it, so come prepared. The other downside is that there are no reservations. You can however "call ahead" which gets you on the list. On the bright side, if you have a wait, take the time to walk the square-it's always worth it. I traveled to Monroe elated with high expectations and a voracious hunger, sadly I left somewhat disappointed. We stopped here to have lunch and were surprised at how packed it was on a weekday afternoon. The waitress was extremely friendly and the menu was diverse. We informed her we were vegetation and she had plenty of suggestions. To start with we tried the deviled eggs with out the bacon. They were kind of sad. My kids were disappointed because they said mine were better, and I was crushed because the last deviled eggs I had were at the Ale Asylum in Milwaukee and they were phenomenal. These lacked flavor and were just plain bland. The quesadilla was extremely greasy but had a good assortment of vegs and cheese and the salsa and chips were very good. The quesadilla was divided into 4 pieces and after about half of one piece I was greased out. The veg burrito also had an assortment of vegs but there was something off about it. It was almost like a stew of vegetables with liquid cheese where stuffed into a tortilla. Could not get myself to eat more than one or two bites. Now the Vegi burger was the golden star of this joint. It was well put together, had excellent flavor and texture, and the combination of the slaw and bread was exceptional. Overall, the service was very good, but the food fell short for me, except for the Vegi Burger. Maybe if I indulged in a few beers earlier I wouldn't have minded the grease level, but given that it was lunch time, it was too much. read more

Wife, myself and two friends from the Monroe area lunched here on the 5th of June. Three of us ordered the salad with chicken and substituted their Texas brisket for the chicken, dressing on the side. The fourth ordered a burger. The salads were extremely good! Salad was crisp topped with a very tasty brisket! Sidewalk tables were great on a beautiful day in the historic Monroe town square. Bonus was a the art installation around the square surrounding the county courthouse.....statues from outer space! Our local friends added that Pancho & Lefties specials are ever changing and are always as good as our meal! read more

Sometimes you need to head outta Dodge to find what you need. Such was the case when I took a day trip to Monroe WI, ended up downtown on the quaint little Town Square at lunch time, and wandered into Pancho & Lefty's. The restaurant is one of those intimate, old and comfortable-as-an-old-shoe storefront spaces, with a really tiny bar (4 seats) and a collection of two and four-tops where you cozy up with other diners. The joint was crowded at weekday lunch time, so I send vibes to those people dawdling at the bar, and soon a bar spot opened. The menu here is pretty extensive for lunch and it offers some Mexican favorites as the name might imply, but much more. Barbecue choices of both sandwiches and platters, other sandwiches and burgers, and salads, too. I opted for the Brisket sandwich, an item I cannot find at home, and fries with cole slaw ($8.99) It was the "neatest" or most organized lusciousness on a bun I'd had in a long time. I usually expect BBQ brisket to be a sloppy affair, with big slices hanging outside the bread. They provide your with several of their own sauces so you can make your own mess. I like their Carolina style. Fries were the best I've had in awhile, too. Washed it down with an ale on tap. All so good. Service was genuinely friendly and fast from the gals on the floor. A friend and I discovered this gem in downtown Monroe one night by accident. We each ordered one of their specialty burritos (grilled chicken and grilled steak). The burritos came very fast and were filled with great ingredients like beans, rice, fresh veggies and lots of meat. This is a small restaurant on the downtown Monroe square. There is limited seating, but they seem to move the people through with ease. I have also heard wonderful things about their burgers and especially the sweet potato fries. If you are looking for a casual place with great food, comfy atmosphere and fresh ingredients, this is the place you want to visit. If you are anywhere in Green County, this is a must stop. You will be back, I guarantee. Oh, I forgot to mention that the food is great, but the prices are extremely affordable. No snobbish up-pricing just because it's good food.
