The Pancake House is a treasure. The staff is very friendly and efficient. I had the pecan pancakes with a side of bacon and my wife had scrambled eggs and a waffle. Both were great but the pecan pancakes were out of this world. We will most definitely be stopping here again when we are driving through Liberal on our way to El Paso. read more

I found myself at the Pancake house on my way down to a match in the middle of nowhere New Mexico, which rather expectedly leads one through many other places in the middle of nowhere. One such charming local was Liberal, KS. Having driven through the night, we were in the mood for some good breakfast and I was not particularly thrilled at the thought of another mcmuffin. So, I quickly pulled up my handy Yelp App and quickly searched for some culinary oasis. Pancake house appeared as that last best hope. It seemed unassuming, with a kind of 70s chic befitting of such a place. Like a temple of quarter inch faux wood paneling to the great american cafe. I took in the diversity of patrons coming from all walks of life in the small town. Some old ranchers and some young families, they all came for the egg centric menu. We asked the waitress what was best on the menu and she recommended some supreme Tex-Mex themed omelette. It was a mound of all the basic ingredients of good cafe food; bacon, cheese, onions, peppers, salsa and of course eggs. The coffee was the kind of coffee that is meant to give you a taste of coffee, but not too much strength as to keep the octogenarians happy. It was good though, which can be difficult when dealing with old people coffee. I think what strikes most about the Pancake house for a reformed hipster is its unspoilt nature. Like much of the American West, it has yet to be fully tamed. It embodies exactly what the diner was suppose to be, simple, affordable and utilitarian. You cannot find some exotic mix of smoked salmon and arugula benedict on a bed of quinoa. Nor will you find a special key to decipher what can be made v, ve or g. Everything is made with just the right amount of butter and bacon fat. So if you wish to eat a slice of americana and you happen to be in Liberal, KS, then Pancake house. read more

This place is legendary. The staff is incredibly fast. The prices are very reasonable. But the reason to visit is the food. It is fantastic! Best pancakes in the state. The butter is made in house and everything is fresh and delicious! The atmosphere isn't anything to rave about, but the food makes up for it. Great for groups and brunch. read more

Came in hoping for that hometown feel - which it has. Prices are excellent. But my service was extremely slow, my sausage was burnt on one side, and my eggs were cooked very poorly. Somehow "over medium" meant over cooked on one and under-cooked in the other. Pancakes were just ok. Asked for hot syrup and didn't get it. read more

I can't believe I didn't review this place a couple years ago. I was on a 5000 mile motorcycle ride and I rolled through Liberal around 10 in the morning starving. I didn't expect much in this small town, but I was blown away by the Pancake house. Bottomless coffee, a great buzz, and of course...the famous Apple Pancake. I had a great meal and a good time....and while I came in starving I left full and happy. How does it get any better than that.... And just in case you want to know what you can do in LIberal...well the Wizard of Oz, Dorothy and the gang live just across the hiway. read more

Excellent place for breakfast, Yelp to the rescue again even though the map/directions were off by about 2 blocks. I had the lingonberry crepes with bacon. These were the thinnest laciest crepes I have ever had. No creamy filling and definitely not needed. Next time I would ask the server to warm up the lingonberry preserves, it was excellent, just cold so it cooled off the crepes a little faster then I would have liked. The bacon was the best I have had in a very long time, meaty yet just crispy enough to make me happy and just chewy enough to make my hubby happy. Hubby ordered standard fare, eggs over easy & hash browns and just 1 pancake on the side. He is very fussy about his pancakes not being doughy and only wanted one to try it. Needless to say he could have eaten a short stack, it was so delicious. He asked to have a little bit of finely diced onion fried in with his hash browns. When his meal arrived it had a few fried onion rings on top of the crispy brown hash browns. His meal was well prepared and the onions weren't a big deal. Breakfast was $16, coffee was good and refills were always on hand, service was friendly and prompt. We will be stopping in again! read more

Breakfast is my thing I'll admit it so I waited from May to Oct before I could stop for breakfast on my way back home. Great selection (50+), super fast service and great pricing. I had buttermilk pancakes, eggs and sausage. It does not get any better than this for me. I'll be back for any meal as I could eat breakfast 3 times a day. read more

Very disappointed in this place. We went on a Sunday morning... very busy (not the issue). We sat down and we're immediately greeted with the bus boy to take our drink order. We sat for 15 min. Before I asked the bus boy to grab our waitress (this was after she took the order of the couple behind us that came in after us). we sat for another 10 minutes and she still never came, never looked our way. We got up and walked out. Very poor service. I know you were busy, but I also work in the restaurant business... really simple, walk by, apologize and say you will be with us in a few minutes. read more

This is a great Mom and Pop place. Friendly service! There were no mistakes. They have great pancakes! Our family ordered blueberry pancakes, chocolate chip pancakes and the house specialty Apple pancake which is huge! Want to try the German pancake next time! This place is wonderful!! Ordered the house special apple pancake and Dutch pancake. Definitely worth the 20 minutes waiting time! They are all freshly baked and served immediately with butter, syrup and cinnamon sugar. Also, the waitress are wonderful too! I was hungry when I arrived in Liberal, and used the Yelp address and direction finder . . . and could not find the establishment on the main drag. It was not where the address and directions said it should be. I probably should have called the restaurant - I plead caffeine deprivation - but instead ended up driving to a local donut establishment, which was . . . adequate. Awarding five stars to give it the benefit of the doubt. Not their fault that Yelp and I couldn't find it together, but I want to give the owners, if they check Yelp, a head's up that they may be missing some business. read more

Military personnel traveling through via helicopter at the local airport. Spent the night in Liberal and had an AWESOME breakfast at Pancake House. Very old school diner and the chef has been working there for many, many years. Eggs were cooked perfectly to order and even the coffee was brewed to perfection and my cup was never below 1/4. The staff knew everyone by name in this small town, they were courteous to us "outsiders" and made us feel like locals. read more

When we walked in on a Sunday morning around 9 am we were greeted by a nice hostess who showed us to our booth. It looked like any small town café and had the wonderful smell of breakfast food in the air. We all ordered pretty much the same items, wife and I the eggs, meat, hash brown and pancake platter. I went with chocolate chip cakes and she went with the butterscotch. My son got the kids plate with choc. chip cakes, eggs and a meat. The waitress was very attentive and friendly. The pancakes weren't the prettiest I have seen, but the taste sure made me overlook that very quickly! They were some of the most tender pancakes I have had and were loaded with chips inside and also on top. My wife's cakes were very good too. Looks like we will be back in Liberal this summer and will make sure we visit again. read more

After driving all night, we came across this local restaurant in passing through Liberal. My husband had bacon, eggs, hashbrowns, and Butterscotch pancakes. He said the bacon was the best he had had in a while, and the pancakes were rich and delicious. I had the veggie omelette with hashbrowns and Canadian bacon. All was good! Our 15 months old son ate all of his scrambled egg and sausage patties. The staff was very welcoming and friendly. The service was quick and we felt refreshed afterwards, ready to drive a few more hours to Texas. If you're passing through, I highly recommend you stop by!! read more

Just awful. Ordered the scrambled eggs with minced ham. Got what appeared to be hard fried eggs that had been cut up and mixed with ham, including a huge piece of rind (about 1"x 2"). I'm not sure if that was their version of scrambled eggs, or if someone left the eggs on the grill too long and they got hard, but I seriously could not eat them. And if I thought the coffee would redeem the breakfast I was wrong. Very weak coffee. I gave two stars instead of one because I had eaten there before and had a pecan waffle and bacon, both of which were adequate. But this time I left hungry. Oh yeah, the toast was OK. read more

Apparently, they bought 'southwest' style egg beaters....each of the 3 times it came to us, we went it back because it was spicy. They were never able to figure it out. I came thru here Wed morning after dropping off a crew at Loves down the Highway, After I placed my order my dispatched called to ask that I meet my crew because they lefted something in my van. I asked the waitress to hold off on my order until I returned, She said no problem, and waited until I returned to start my order. Great for pancakes, lousy for hashbrowns. Since Liberal, Kansas's main drag is Pancake Boulevard, I couldn't resist going to The Pancake House, which is the only pancake restaurant in Liberal. . The first thing that struck me was the atmosphere: the waitstaff were all joking with each other and laughing. In particular, my waitress, Gloria, was making everyone smile with her wit and humor. Gloria has been working there for decades and she is reason enough to eat there. You'll leave believing Kansans are the most wonderful, happy people. I was thinking of only ordering pancakes, but. Gloria suggested I get one of the breakfast items on the lower right side of the menu since they are about the same price and come with free buttermilk pancakes. I paid a buck extra to upgrade to strawberry pancakes and was well stuffed by the end of the meal. I got three pancakes, two eggs, three strips of bacon, hashbrowns, and an orange juice for only $7, including tax. The pancakes were delicous and would have been worth $7 alone. In fact, I'm staying an extra night in Liberal just so I can have another breakfast at The Pancake House before I go. I hear the apple pancakes are amazing and the butterscotch are to die for. Unfortunately, I can't give the Pancake House five stars. Perhaps because I arrived right before they closed at 1pm, the hashbrowns and bacon were dried out and stiff. If I had been paying more, I would have sent those parts back. The eggs were cooked perfectly, so I assume the problem wasn't a bad cook but that I got food that'd been under a heatlamp for hours. Don't show up on a Monday as they'll be closed, but they're open 6am to 1pm every other day. read more
