I stopped at the lot behind Casey's to kinda wash up for the morning. Parked the rig, and saw a full lot packed outside this little small town Cafe. It was then I remembered glancing at a huge Beef Processing Plant just on the edge of town...think it was called National Beef... And then it hit me: Cattleman's Cafe + Beef Processing Plant...maybe...just maybe..they served steak here That's how I found myself sitting inside this Midwestern country diner. The description on the menu-- Uncle Ed's Steak sounded legitimate. So I had me a rib eye, with a side of corn and Brocolli. Then to start off, some Bloomin Onions. Rating: Ok, I'm going to be real honest, the quality of the beef is *Good* Its on the level of USDA Choice Select, but it IS fresh. Like I can enjoy the natural flavors of the Beef, it's not drenched in marinade and just the overall taste spelled decent quality. Now, because back in the days, I would go out to Costco and pick up USDA Prime Ribeyes three or 4 cuts at under 45.00 (those were the good times). But it wouldn't be fair to compare this to that so for a standard family run affair, this place serves pretty solid steak. Though however the chef kinda went on the rarer side for my Medium Rare and if the cuts have so much fat marbling in them, it probably would be better for the steak to be grilled longer on the fat tissues. The corn sides were a little to sweet and wished they either cut down on the sugar, or use some heavy whipping cream or half and half to balance that sweetness out-- like real creme corn. The Bloomin Onions were a surprise. Over the past decades, I'd probably only order this appetizer at say Outback Steakhouse, but this dish does take the prize for a worthy starter here at the Cattleman's. Overall, server was very locked in. True country hospitality, think her name is Naziah. Kudos! Great service! And anyone ever driving through town, give this place a go. read more

I was in Liberal for work, and needed some dinner. Cattleman caught my eye for some good down home cooking. I love some country fried steak so I came here for that. I got seated quickly. The service was really good. The waitress was super friendly, very helpful. I got the country fried steak, mashed potatoes and gravy and fried okra. Man, what a meal. ! I really enjoyed it. The catch fried steak was huge. I ate part and took the rest to eat for breakfast the next morning. Everything came out hot and tasty I was very happy with my meal here I would come back. read more

Don't ever judge the outside of a building cause if you do you will kiss out on one amazing meal or meals! Stopped in as we spent the night in Liberal, KS (also didn't judge a town by its name! We have been stopping here for 35 years as we drive thru. Their chicken fried steak is still the best I've had. And I order it often. The cream gravy is soooo good on the fluffy mashed potatoes. The size of the steak is smaller and price higher. But worth it. A good cut of meat. My husband had the grilled pork chops that were juicy and tasty. Thanks for keeping this alive. read more

All the food was delicious! Service was very good. Our family ordered Chips and Salsa to start, two Chicken Fried Steaks, a Pot Roast plate, and a Sirloin steak. Traveling through and definitely made a mistake by stopping here. We don't judge a diner by looks or age. But the cleanliness was well below par. New server who quite apparently had not been trained. Didn't receive sides with meal and server didnt come back to table to see if we need anything additional, so when we finally went up to pay (didn't receive check at table) explained that we hadn't received full order. Cashier went to get manager and she said she couldn't make adjustment, that she didn't have authority. Asked to talk to owner, we spoke to him on phone he was unprofessional and rude. Said he would not make adjustment because sides are "free". Yet each side has a price on menu. I told owner I would be giving a review and his response was "we don't use reviews". not sure what he thinks a review is. Don't waste your money at this restaurant. read more

No doubt the steaks are excellent, but I opted for the pot roast dinner - which was at least as good as Momma used to make! My wife had the Sunday special lasagna, equally excellent. Our server,Julie, went above and beyond to ensure we had everything just right. I'll second others who have observed that the fried okra deserves special mention. Glad to see that the economy hasn't hit the portions in this restaurant. You definitely get your moneys worth here as the prices are extremely reasonable. The reviews were good so stopped here for lunch while passing through.. I wasn't sure if they had gluten free options but tried it anyway. The sweet waitress worked with me, giving me 2-3 options, while my daughter tried the cheeseburger and fries. My friend ordered the dark fried chicken plate. We all enjoyed our lunch and would come again... on a side note; I was impressed that although their ladies room was a single, it was warm and had hot water to wash your hands and actually had soft toilet paper.. Because it was close to my hotel, I just finished driving 6 hours and I wanted a steam but was too tired to look around for a steakhouse which I'm sure are abundant in Kansas. Let's get straight to the point. The best rib-eye for $20. If you want bang for the buck, eat here!!! You have your choice of a few sides. I chose some fries but their buttered corn was damned amazing!!! So sweet and so good!!! I should have had a double helping of that and next time I will because I'll have to come here now for an account. Great job, Cattleman's. You get 4 stars from me. Restaurant is old and outdated from the inside and outside. Definitely not a place for a steak. Ordered a sirloin medium rare and it was under cooked with the chewier meat. I had to put some elbow pressure to cut the steak. The vegetables appeared to be microwaved. Mashed potatoes were the add water to the powder mashed potato's. The salad was browning on some parts. $Prices on the menu are way too high for the quality of the food. The other options on the menu such as the chicken fried steak are mediocre, I mean it's kind of hard to mess it up since it goes from frozen straight to the deep fryer. Very slow service, but once the order was placed it seemed to be ok. Girl at the door a bit unfriendly. Locals seemed to given preferential treatment in comparison to out-of-towners. Order was incorrect but food was decent, and prices were good. I believe that much of what we experienced was due to being short-staffed and very busy. I stopped in Liberal, KS in the middle of a long drive and decided to stay the night. I didn't feel like going to sit in a restaurant and decided to order takeout to enjoy in the privacy of my hotel room. I got the chicken fried steak with fried okra and mashed potatoes (they threw in a roll, too). When I called I was delighted to find that my order was going to be ready in 10 minutes! I couldn't imagine a full meal being done that fast. I made my way on over (easier to find than some claim--they have a ground-level sign out front) and picked it up before heading home. I asked to get the cream gravy separate because I didn't want the breading to get soggy before I could eat it. The chicken fried steak was cooked perfectly. The breading is large-flaked instead of the more finely ground breading I'm accustomed to which gives it an interesting texture. Gravy was well-flavored, too. The okra didn't seem to have been salted, but that is a minor critique. The roll was fluffy, fresh, and delicious. Highly recommend! read more

Meatloaf made to perfection. Your standard greasy spoon mashed potatoes and gravy were both excellent. The real star of the show was the corn. It's really hard to describe, fantastic flavor, but it was almost like a sweet, sticky corn. If you've ever had sweet sticky rice at a Thai restaurant, real similar. Absolutely loved it. I also ordered a side of the "battered mushrooms." Where have these been all my life. I've had plenty of frozen, deep-fried mushrooms in my life, these are not that folks. These are chicken fried mushrooms. These aren't your typical take from the freezer into the fryer type of appetizer. These are fresh mushrooms, with a chicken fry type batter that's super crispy and far exceeded anything I would've expected. Only complaint about the whole deal, everything was under-seasoned. Again, 4-5 stars. Mr is still balking at the lack of liquor as we travel! The ribeye was perfectly prepared and served with salad AND two sides. Green beans were made with bacon and a little vinegar. Clara's Chicken Fried Chicken was incredible and perfect. The prices are great and the menu has many options. A little something for everyone. Our server was fun and presented a true small town Kansas flavor to our evening. If you care more about portions than flavor than this is the place to go. I'm sorry the only thing that I can say was good was the roll and Okra. The okra needed to be seasoned but they were hot. Driving through and stayed the night in Liberal. Decided to grab a bite to eat. Not worth your time. Wait staff needs to be trained. A couple of them were clueless. Asked what came with certain dishes and she didn't know. Restaurant was not very clean. Tables need to be stripped and revarnished. Very sticky and tacky tables. The light fixture above our table was coated in food particles and just gross. Food was not great either. Ordered a pork chop and could not get a knife through it. Waitress never came back to table to ask how our food was. When she finally did, with the bill, we had to ask for credit, otherwise we wouldn't have gotten it. She wasn't sure what to do and went back to ask someone else. Came back and said she needed to get approval from the manager and literally grabbed the pork chop with her fingers to take back to kitchen. We did end up getting credit so we appreciated that. Again, they need to be trained. Customer service goes a LONG way. It's too bad because there really is not a nice place to get a good steak in Liberal. read more

It's not great. The portions are large, and the service is fine. But it's a little greasy, smells a little off, and could use some cleaning.

This is homemade comfort food. I wondered if my Mother or Grandmother were cooking in the kitchen. Lunch special was spaghetti & meatballs that looked wonderful, but I couldn't pass up homemade meatloaf with green beans & carrots for sides. Yummy!
