Was really hoping for this to be our new go-to breakfast spot... I'll come back and re-review but our first experience was pretty bad, and at this point it's humorous. We were a larger group, 9 people, and they were able to seat us together. The staff looked stress, were running like their heads were chopped off, and we didn't really mean to make it difficult - we are a pretty easy going group.
Although this is a one star review, I'll have to say that the staff REALLY tried to do their best, and when my food came out it actually was decent (cheese omelette with spinach, hash browns, and 3 pancakes). They sent us out a free crepe that someone had accidentally ordered at another table, we were off to a good start but then it all went down hill from there.
So the issues that transpired that we might equate to it being a new restaurant (hopefully they work out the kinks):
1) We asked "how many people" the carafe of OJ served. The waiter left for 5-10 minutes and tells us $9.99, obviously some miscommunication since that's already clearly on the menu. On his own accord decides to bring us two without us asking us if we wanted to (assumed there were 9 of us so we needed two), well we just paid $20 in OJ...
2) THE TACO SALAD: we had a vegan with us, which in hindsight she probably have just said she was vegan off the bat (our friend thinks there is stigma around being Vegan, sure). She asked for the taco salad with no cheese, and beef on the side (one of our friends wanted to eat the beef - eye roll). The waiter comes out 5 minutes after ordering and let's us know they are out of the taco shells so she asks for the tortilla chips instead. The waiter was already confused... Five minutes later he comes out again and informs her that they are out of chips AND beef. Since she is vegan she asked again for the taco salad with the ingredients they had available (no beef, no cheese, no bowl, no tortilla chips). They were VERY confused at this point. Someone comes out and says "I am very uncomfortable serving you this... is this what you wanted?" NOT exaggerating, but they literally brought out a plate with FOUR slices of tomato, A sliced avocado, some sliced jalapeño peppers, some dressing, and a SINGLE piece of lettuce... ok sorry, I have to repeat this, A SINGLE PIECE OF LETTUCE. We were so confused, so they took it back and tried again. They once again brought it out but this time it came with little pieces of cheese in it. The manager admitted that they would have brought it out earlier but they accidentally put cheese on the salad, so the chef had to take it back and pick off the cheese. THEY PICKED off the cheese instead of making a new salad, so there was ruminants of it... so we finally told the manager that she was vegan, and the manager felt really bad which wasn't our intention. The description of the salad says "packed with iceberg lettuce" so not sure why there was so much confusion, our friend would have probably been happy with a bowl of lettuce and salad dressing.
The manager told us that they would give our table a discount for the ordeal that we now know as the Grand Opening of Pancake Cafe. They didn't charge us for the salad that never was, and they comped her iced coffee. Besides that, no discount. To be honest, if the courtesy discount was never offered we wouldn't have even asked for it, but if you're going to offer something to patrons, it would be nice to follow through with it. We still tipped 20%, you know like a participation award? You didn't get gold, silver, or bronze, but you participated!
3) Remember when I said "when my food came out"? Well my first order came out with hair, so they sent it back and made it quickly. The order ended up being wrong, but by this point I decided to just ignore it (asked for no green peppers but they included it). Cost benefit analysis, hair or green peppers - I choose green peppers.
4) We ordered a club sandwich and was brought out a Cobb salad...
5) The Philly Cheesesteak order came out 15-20 minutes after everyone else received and ate their food.
6) We had to ask for the pancakes that were suppose to come out with our food on multiple occasions.
7) Pancakes came out and we had to ask for syrup multiple times. Our pancakes were cold by the time we got our syrup... they did give us a stick of butter at the beginning of our meal though...
Two hours later, half the group was late to the Cubs game the other half was still hungry, but we all at least we left with a funny shared experience! read more
