Tierra Caliente is a very long standing panaderia here in Houston -- it's got all of the classic mexican sweet breads you can think of and they make them well. As someone who's been coming here since I was a kid I know exactly what to look for based on my preferences, but I will say it can be hard to navigate the space if you're looking to try it for the first time. Minimal labelling on items, and everyone is usually spanish-speaking. I came to buy a cake for my nephew and once I was halfway to his house I realized the berries had mold. I called to ask for a refund, and instead they told me I needed to turn back around and get a new cake as an "exchange". Grew up on pan dulce and it's all very same-y. Not an indictment of Tierra Caliente, but they do a good job of having good variety of classics and fun breads for kids. Rosca de Reyes Review: Hands down the best rosca I can recall ever having. You certainly get your money's worth in quantity and quality. It was fresh out of the oven, fluffy and tasty. The best part for me was the sweet bread portion. I had two large pieces and luckily did not get a baby. There were 2-3 babies hidden, I liked that they were small enough to not to be immediately noticed. I was disappointed when I went looking for a slice of King cake or rosca de reyes. They didn't have individual slices like they did last year. They had had them on Jan. 6. I went a day later. I asked if they could cut a cake in slices for I had no one to share a $14 king cake with. They wouldn't. So then I asked for one of my favorite pastries, ojo de buey. They were out. I have been here and their sister store on Bellaire near the 99 cent store. I prefer the sister store because it is less crowded and they have what seems like a better variety. The yellow conchas that look like a pineapple are very good and you can slice them up and put them in the freezer so you won't get fat so quickly. The things that look like hostess cupcakes are good. The thin yellow yolk round pastry with a light brown edge is delicious ( not the cake looking one, but the one that resembles a Frisbee. The bread rolls are one of the best in Houston and you can freeze them in a Ziploc and they will stay fresh. The prices have gone up since this pandemic so expect to pay around $1.25- 2.95 a pastry. You know how you order a birthday cake from your local grocery store and the cakes aren't very frilly or eye appealing? They are usually one layer and maybe 1.5" high? They charge extra for fillings and the fruit fillings they do use are jarred and jammed. And the cake itself isnt moist and spongy and is so overly sweet that you cant even bare to take another bite! Not here! $30 will get you a 3.5" high moist and not overly sweet tres leches cake with fresh fruit filling of your choice without the added fees for decor and fillings. They have tres leches in standard flavor, strawberry, chocolate, mocha, or you can layer it and ask for the Neapolitan ("napolitano"). Ordered my cake 2 days before the party at 930pm and they had it ready for me, as ordered, on Saturday morning. Cake was very well liked at the party I attended and I passed their info on to a lot of attendees. This is the second time I've ordered from them and will now be my go to bakery. Forget the American grocery store chain cakes! Only issue I came across was a language barrier. Limited English spoken. read more

Wow. Omg. Seriously? I should not write this review, because if too many people find out about this I won't be able to get back in. I lived in Houston for 9 years, and have lived in other big cities, but I've never experienced any kind of bakery like this. We came here to buy bread for our family. We all sat down at home to eat, including my children. As I bit down, my teeth hit something. I looked down and clear as day it was a razor blade. My husband took the bread and went back to discreetly talk to a manager. When one of the girls saw it she said she knew exactly what it was; it was the blade from the knife that cuts the bollios. I'm a big fan of Mexican breads. They aren't overly sweet, they aren't as fatty as doughnuts, and the can be just generally tasty. Tierra Caliente is sort of hidden in the corner of a shopping center, so if you drive around here you may pass it as I have in the past. However, I tried it upon a recommendation as I didn't feel like dealing with the traffic and hassle of going to my favorite panaderia. I tried several things -- cajeta and walnut (or pecan?) empanadas, apple empanadas, conchas, and other items that are typical to a place like this. I was very impressed, and would argue that they compare favorably to any other Mexican bakery in town. The only place I ding them is that they didn't label their breads, and the staff doesn't seem to know which are which, resulting in my guayaba empanada actually being apple. It was a very good apple empanada, but still not what I expected. However, this is overall one of the best panaderias I have eaten at in Houston. It is nowhere near as popular as other panaderias that I like, which will result in me going to Tierra Caliente more often to avoid the crowds and parking issues. In the future, I plan to return to try some of their cakes and other dessert items and will update my review accordingly. read more

It was my coworker's birthday so I was driving around to different Mexican bakeries looking for a tres leche cake. The first bakery didn't have pre-made cakes so they told me to go down the street to Panaderia Tierra Caliente. The girl at the counter spoke English, thank goodness! They only had the big 10 in round and rectangle tres leches on display so I asked if they had a smaller one and the girl went to the back and brought one out to me. The bakery sold an assortment of Mexican pastries but there weren't any prices on anything. I assumed they were inexpensive because the large tres leche was only $25 and my smaller one was $15. They brought out fresh kolaches and I was tempted to get some, but since I was going to eat tres leches, I had to pass. My coworkers really enjoyed the chocolate strawberry tres leche. The cake had soaked a good amount of amount, but wasn't too sweet. My only complaint is that the milks didn't soak all the way down to the last layer of the cake. read more

I called to complain about my cake being dry and they asked me to bring the entire cake back. I had cut 3 slices out to pass out to my family and she said she couldn't do anything about it since we had already ate 3 pieces. Go here all the time the breads good but nothing is labeled and have no idea how much you're going to spend until you get to the cash register. They always count and push in prices on the register so quick you're not sure if the right price was put in or the right amount was put in.
