I'm not the biggest fan of mexi bakeries because they are so deceptive!!! You walk in to see bins upon bins of baked yumminess! Each one with their special color or shape! Then you bite into one with the expectation of something sweet and delectable... only to have your cookie dreams shattered by the taste of... dry... nothing? I've been to the International Bakery on 24th st and I really liked some of the stuff there (especially the bread pudding that makes me pudding in my pants) and I was kind of expecting the same from this place. I know that mexi baked stuff is different and not like white people cakes and cookies, but this place is just wrong! Look at my two pictures of the stuff I got.... go ahead, click on it.... Done? Looks good huh?! Guess again. Dry, stale, tasteless piles of worthlessness. I was a little confused at first since my mind had not yet caught up to my taste buds who were sending my brain electronic signals saying "THROW THAT MHIT OUT THE WINDOW!" (mhit = mexi $hit) I gave these cardboard cookies some pity bites, but I just couldn't take it anymore. I quickly tossed them in the bag they came in (which probably would have tasted better), threw them in a nearby dumpster and headed for the nearest gas station so I could get some ice tea to wash down the wrong that has been placed in my mouth. But my son and I both agreed that we were quite pleased with our pivot plan to visit Con Azucar! We hadn't yet been in, I'd seen tons of photos but that was about it. For breakfast, I got myself a chilaquiles meal because that's my favorite - their take on it was decent: the sauce was the real star. I appreciated that it was served platter style with house potatoes, beans, and I believe there was also rice. This made it super easy to split the meal with my son: we just added a couple of eggs to the chilaquiles for me, and then ordered him a side of beef and a delicious pastry, and then there were plenty of sides on my dish that he enjoyed picking at. I actually was not planning on getting coffee here but toward the end of our visit I decided it would be a loss not to try it while we were in here. I ended up deciding on an iced Mazapan latte and I was very pleasantly surprised! I have since returned for this exact latte again. It is such a great balance of creamy and sweet and nutty. For my personal palette, I'd probably prefer it with one extra shot just because it is quite sweet, but however they are making their Mazapan syrup... Man, they've nailed it! HIGHLY recommend trying that when you're visiting!
