OK, OK, so guess what? They have veggie-dogs now. NICE......!!! AND they're not half bad! (They also have two other vegetarian meat-substitute sandwiches to backup the veggie-dog, which is a cool effort...). All my persistent nagging finally paid off! Woohoooooo! But it's true, I've now finally tried PP for the first time... So if the veggie-dog is pretty OK & there's even more than one veg-friendly item on the menu, why only the three star rating then, you ask me? Well, I'll tell ya... First, the other two menu items (Veggie Steak sandwich & Veggie Chicken sandwich) are both about 1.5 stars at best (I will say however that I didn't actually try the latter, though judging by the photos of the sandwiches on their wall (looks like the exact same sandwich but with different "meat") and by common sense I'd say I'm 99.9% sure it's pretty much the same thing). They both need fatter buns, heftier meat, more flavor, and more pizazz. Second, the prices are definitely not worth what you get for the fake "Steak" or the fake "Chicken". Three bucks for what I got should have at least came with chips or fries or whatever. Which brings me to the last reason for a not so great rating: Third/lastly, THEY DON'T SELL FRENCH FRIES there! Nooooo! I like me some fries with mah hotdog! I dunno, chips don't really cut it for me. So, I dunno. I'm glad that one of Alameda's longest standing restaurants has veggie dogs now (which are pretty decent), but expect to pay nearly $4 for JUST the dog & don't even think about ordering any of the other two vegetarian options. I can say though that for the dog I believe I will return occasionally because of the close proximity to my home / frequent hangout spots. Pampered Pup, you're now OK by me. *SIDE NOTE: Their veggie-dogs aren't the customary "frank" type link but instead taste more like German sausages (mild spicy flavor) and expect the texture to be unlike real sausage (moist yet slightly crumbly (I know, horrible description but it's the best I can do for now)). Still, the zesty flavor makes up for the weird texture, in my opinion. :D read more

It's no Doggie Diner(memories) but Pampered Pup is a little dive specializing in hot dogs. I had the Chicago and my little girl had a Cheese Dog. We shared a drink and a bag of chips. Total bill came to a little over $11. My dog was all right but I think I'll stick with Kaspers closer to home, stay loyal to Pinks whenever I'm in LA(and reminisce about Grays Papaya in NYC). read more

OK... as a self-proclaimed hot dog, nay, *sausage* snob, this review is a bit hard for me to write. Having gone to Cal and worshipping at the altar of Top Dog for years, it felt sacrilegious for me just stepping into the Pampered Pup. It looks 50 years old and I knew they'd be serving, gulp, BOILED dogs. But after giving in once or twice, I can give my full stamp of approval. Once I got over the fact that these were boiled hot dogs and not grilled-to-order gourmet sausages--and didn't need to drive 20 mins. to Berkeley or 10+ min. to The Dog Out at Marina Village--I've been going more often for a Sauerkraut or Chili Dog. Nothing special; hits the spot and tastes like hot dogs used to, long before people paid any attention to "ingredients." (Hugh Grant was once quoted saying, "Do you know what's in an American hot dog? Lips and ahhs-holes.") With the new Alameda Theater open, I doubt the Double P is going to close shop anytime soon. Of course, I would never recommend this place over Top Dog and that's where my loyalty will always lie. Oh, contrary to Shanghai K., the ownership hasn't changed. They did close, however, for a while after a fire. I admit, shamefully, that I hoped it would be replaced by something cooler or hipper. But now I get that it's an Alameda institution and needs to stay put to remind us of the city's scruffier, but homey, past. read more

Old school hot dogs served hot and to order. This place has been an Alameda staple for years and years. Never disappoints. I always go for a basic beef hot dog with mustard and onions and always wish I had ordered two! Great stop after a movie at the Alameda Theatre or as a destination. I have always walked by the pampered pup and wanted to try it, today I did. Me and my father walked in and were greeted immediately with the friendly staff member and were presented a wide variety of unique dogs to choose from. I got the El Paso dog and my father got the deluxe dog. I really enjoyed the way all the ways the unique flavors came together with my hotdog and my dad enjoyed the way the made the classic hot dog even better. Would recommend to anybody who wants a nice quick filling bite read more

Love their Hot Links! It's a tiny place, but the hot dogs are always good. The drinks are a rip tho. Their so-called "small soda" is literally a water cup at other restaurants. While the hot dogs were somewhat decently priced, they really get you with the drinks. i don't know how you mess up a hot dog, but i guess it's possible. a soggy bottomed bun and an almost cold sausage with no snap is probably a good start. the crowds of students on their off-campus lunch don't help, either. this is an okay place to get a quick, cheap meal... but it really lacks soul. hot dog cult eaters would be beyond disappointed. p.s. at least the hot link is decent. 2.5 stars read more

Went back in for the grand re-opening, and was very glad to have done so. The Deluxe Dog is still a perfect All-American hot dog. I like mine with sauerkraut, and the kraut used here was perfect for a frankfurter on a bun. Just sour enough, not soggy. I'll be back to get an El Paso dog. I have a very soft spot for the loving work that they have done on this place in honor of their father/husband as i lost my father this year as well and totally get the desire to memorialize him! I was lured into The Pampered Pup by a handwritten sign announcing "avocado smoothies." I knew I was in for a treat. The Pampered Pup resembles a tiny club house (Or dog house?), complete with rustic colored flooring and Hostess Suzy Q's. I ordered an avocado smoothie and a sauerkraut dog. I found the avocado smoothie delicious and unique. I wasn't quite sure what went into it (avocado, ice and....). The sauerkraut dog was good too! read more

Been coming here for as long as i can remember as a kid. Now Alameda has become more modern and lost much of it's old town feel. Coming back to Alameda to visit family once in a while, I will always come back to the Pup for a Colossal Dog. This place hasn't changed much and that's what I like about it. I can stil remember coming here as a teen and their Deluxe dogs snap just like it did so many decades ago. Best chili cheese dog ever! The El Paso dog is a nice step up from the chili dog though.. Both are absolutely fabulous! I've always had fantastic friendly service. The owner is a sweet little lady, I come here every chance I get and every time I come in she is nothing but smiles! Love it! They have a new dog too.. Not sure the name of it but its spicy with onions and when I say spicy I mean SPICY, but worth it! What can I say? I was definitely underwhelmed with my dog selection. There was nothing special about my meal; rather, basic hot dogs on white buns with standard ingredients, for about $4-$6 a piece. My son loved the spinning stools, so that was a plus. The restaurant itself is small, was swarming with flies, and was just as underwhelming as our meal. I probably wouldn't go back with the plethora of options available on Park. Otherwise, it's a quick meal, yet a tad overpriced. read more

This place is old-school charming. A sweet lady wrapped up my boiled pickle dog (think chicago dog without the peppers) and I enjoyed it very much. This is a higher end dog, but not a sausage. It was exactly what I wanted and I was happy. Maybe a little pricey for what it was, but the menu choices looked really yummy. The owner was so accommodating, and even let us stay to cut the cake and give away prizes.
