As long as i've lived in Alameda, Pampered Pup has been here. It sounds silly, but it's an iconic Alameda restaurant. Located on Park St. and Central, the orange pup is familiar to any Alameda native and has marked its territory for ages. As a kid I remember coming here, as I got older I remember not enjoying it as much, and just recently confirmed what I had known all along. The Pampered Pup has been around forever- but I have no idea how they stay in business. Unfortunately, the hot dogs are just so-so. The dogs have an alright snap, but that's where it ends. If there is one thing that can ruin any hot dog, it's a wet bun. The buns here are totally soggy- the juice from the hot dog water drenches them. I shared 3 dogs, two deluxe dogs and one Chicago- all soggy buns. There was nothing that could save them. Sorry. read more

Nice owner and staff. Wanted to live the place as it is cute, folks or nice and it's close to my house. I'll come back because of those reasons but the hotdog is literally no better than a hotdog at 7- eleven. I've been going here since I moved to Alameda in 2003. I grew up in Chicago and Milwaukee and this is one of the only, if not the only place to get a traditional "Chicago Style" hot dog! A whole in the Wall, family run with a traditional Ma & Pa feel. This family that runs it are very nice and always hospitable. I especially enjoyed getting my dawgs when the older gentleman, the father was tending the the front. He was a sweet man and always had a smile on his face, very welcoming. So, we decided on what we wanted fairly quickly. The bf had the Cheese Dog and I had a Chicken Dog and we shared potato salad and a soda. Our total came out to about $8. The guy who was helping us, who I'm pretty sure owns the place, wasn't friendly at all. He almost seemed annoyed when he was asking us what we wanted on our hot dogs. The bf even felt as if he was calculating exactly how much to put on the spoon when he asked for onions and the guy barely put any on the hot dog. The bf thought his Cheese Dog was pretty crappy. The Chicken Dog wasn't that great. I would rather have a turkey dog at the Oakland flea market to be brutally honest. The potato salad had no flavor. There isn't a lot of room to sit (there are only three tables inside and two small ones on the sidewalk), but most people grab their dogs to go anyway. The chili-cheese dog is my favorite. As Rachel Ray would say, "yumm-o!!" There is no comparison between this place and the Wienerschnitzel down the road. read more

Pampered Pup occupies a tiny corner of Park and Central and I usually walked by without a thought, until the day I was craving a chili dog and I knew Wienerschnitzel didn't have the goods to satisfy. So I gave Pampered Pup a try and it was pretty good. The dog was a decent size and the chili was thick and not runny. It also had more depth of flavor than most other places. I wish they gave me more cheese but overall it was a very good chili dog and will now be my go to place. Too bad they don't serve chili fries but I plan on solving that problem myself by buying fries from Jack in the Box and then a bowl of Chili from Pampered Pup. read more

Yuck. I've walked by Pampered Pup numerous times and it's always been empty but I ate here recently anyways against my better judgment. My polish was fine but not great, I think I prefer Costco's, which is also larger and cheaper. My fiance wanted the $1 nachos so we got them and the cheese was sour. They also sell rice crackers and random Nong Shim ramen bowls at the counter. Prices conveniently include tax but I thought the dogs here were overpriced. This place is expensive for what you get. I got the kraut dog which was kinda small and the toppings weren't generous by any stretch. The person who took my order seemed preoccupied with other things. He seemed a bit annoyed when I asked him what exactly went on the kraut dog (just sauerkraut or other stuff too?).
