Palmer Lake Lodges is fantastic. The owners are so sweet and accommodating. If you're like me, you don't want to actually camp, but you want a cute lil cabin where you can unwind and unplug and still feel like you're camping. But with a/c and no bugs and like, beds to sleep in. Honestly this is the cutest - each cozy cabin sleeps like 6+ and has a lakeside view and tons of storage. PLUS they have boat rentals. And the cabins are pet friendly. And there's a bed and breakfast option. And an ice cream parlor. And the owner has an adorable lil frenchie. If you're looking for something out of the way in a picturesque setting right on a lake, call Polina.

My boyfriend and I are just leaving after an awesome week at the lake. We had so much fun! We had a spacious, clean and cozy cabin. A grill, a fire pit, canoes, a pontoon, a huge yard, sand volleyball, basketball hoop, and a cafe on the grounds with delicious waffles, cinnamon rolls, ice cream and cookies! Such a relaxing, peaceful and beautiful week! And if you drive in to town, there are cool magic shops with quirky workers that love to show off their magic tricks! We had a wonderful stay and will definitely be back! Thank you Polina and Palmer Lake Lodges!!

Living area in cabin #1...the rug and loveseat were covered with dog hair upon our arrival.

First impressions were not good at Palmer Lake Lodges on Palmer Lake in Colon, Michigan. If you were in a pinch and like it rustic, this would be ok, if you're ok with cobwebs and a few other inconveniences. The photos on their website (by the way the website was changed after we booked in February) are nothing like the cabin we stayed in, except perhaps the kitchen and that looked the same. And the fully furnished kitchen needed to have at least 1 sharp knife and a potholder or two. I know they said to bring your own towels, but I expected at least one dish towel in the kitchen, but there was not. The website says modern cabins...I would question the modern part. Now I must say that we visited a few weeks before our arrival to make sure the cabin would sleep the 7 of us, she couldn't show us cabin #1 because it was locked (that is where she had us booked, because it was a bit larger than the rest, but just a bit) but she showed us cabin #3 instead. It was pleasant and appeared to be good for us. The website says it sleeps 8 comfortably...that is not true unless they bring in bunk beds, as they will do, but that would make for a tight squeeze. Our cabin had a double bed in one room, a double bed with a bunk above it in the other bedroom (they do go wall to wall) so if you are tall, it probably wouldn't work for you, and we had a futon in the living area. There was a loveseat that a child could sleep on. Upon arrival we met the young lady who runs the business and she is very kind and helpful. She was happy to tell us the cabin was ready for us. She took us in to show us around and I was surprised that this cabin didn't look like the cabin we visited previously. I was pretty "grossed out" when I saw the large floor rug in the living room area covered with dirt and dog hair, as it was evident that nobody had cleaned. The loveseat was also covered with dog hair. She told us that there was a light outside the back door, but probably not good to use it because it draws bugs to the area...well we didn't need to worry about it, because of the 3 outdoor lights on the outside of our cabin, none had bulbs in them. My husband went and asked for a vacuum cleaner to clean up the dog hair and she immediately came and started vacuuming. The bedrooms are tiny and dark and have old outdated dirty carpet in them. On the floor in the doorway to one bedroom were tacks sticking up out of the floor from a tack strip and my daughter stepped on them once and remembered after that to step over! Speaking of floors, ours had linoleum (not glued down) in most of the area other than the bedrooms which had a very rippled/wavy effect. It appeared to have been laid down over indoor/outdoor carpet, and I wonder what kind of condition the carpeting was in that was covered up. The one bedroom had a dresser in it and in the 8 inches between the dresser and wall it was disgusting. It appeared that nobody had bothered to clean, dust or vacuum that area in a very long time. There were lots of cobwebs, a spider egg nest, and dirt (see pictures). I checked under the bed and it was the same way. I couldn't sleep the first night in that bedroom wondering what may be crawling on me. So I moved to the fouton in the living room from then on. The cleaning crew, if they have one, does not pay attention to those areas when cleaning. There were many many cobwebs and some small spiders in the cabin. It was obvious, though, this room hadn't been cleaned well in a long time. The bathroom always had hot water (a plus) but the floor had some kind of cutout right in the middle. I'm guessing that is how they access the plumbing. It's a square cut out and then put back into place, so when you first step on it, you think the floor is rotted away, but it's not. And just from the 4 days we were there a big old brown stain appeared from where the water dripped from the shower head. It didn't look rusty as most iron stains, but dark brown. Also, speaking of bathrooms, they supply the toilet paper, but when she told us the cabin was ready for us, there was only 1/2 of a roll of 1 ply toilet paper :-) for the entire week for 7 people. The owner did bring us another roll (yay..2 ply). They also supply you with a roll of paper towels for cleaning, etc. For the cabin being ready for us when we arrived, I think the only thing that had been done were beds made up and even then, after seeing the cobwebs and the condition of the other things in the cabin, I even wondered if the bedding was clean or not. I am assuming it was, but again not sure. My husband and daughter had issues with their noses plugging up every time they entered the cabin. :-( It does have a full size fridge and stove and small microwave. Kitchen appears to have been updated. Good idea to bring bottled water as the water is high in iron. Only has wi-fi if you walk up to the B&B, as it doesn't reach the cabins. No room for 8 to sit comfortably. Seating for 5-6.

Pontoons and the beautiful lake!

The lodges were absolutely AMAZING! We stayed in cabin 3 and it was super cozy and clean. We weren't sure what to expect other than from reading other reviews but the hostess at the bait shop was ready to greet us from the second we arrived...we felt welcome immediately! I seriously felt like I was at home and not a guest. And the lake, lodge, beach, trees, etc was also SO gorgeous. My bf and I just sat on the dock gazing at the sunset until we finally decided to take a boat out. Polina the hostess was so helpful in showing us how to operate it and it was so relaxing, easy and fun! Not to mention the delicious food and the quiet and the beautiful weather. Honestly we can't wait to come back!!!

Mendon Country Inn

Mendon Country Inn

We have stayed at the Mendon Country Inn seven times so far and hope to get out there for an eighth…read moresoon. We have thoroughly enjoyed our visits to this inn and the surrounding area and would recommend it to most anyone seeking tranquility, peaceful environs, great food, and excellent company. The Mendon Country Inn is an old stagecoach inn originally from 1843 and has spent time as an inn, a restaurant, and an antique store. I'm glad to say that the proprieters, Chef Gerard and Cheryl Clarke have retained the best parts of each of these to bring every guest a delightful stay. The inn itself has many period pieces in her rooms and Chef Gerard runs a restaurant in the Wakeman Dining Room. As it is new, we have not had the pleasure of dining in it yet, however we have partaken in his delectable full breakfasts each morning and savored a few of his special occasion meals. Our rooms of choice are at the Creekside Lodge, a Native American motif house with five jacuzzi suites with gas or Jensen fireplaces. There is a common room with kitchen, relaxation area, and fireplace on the main level and a common area with fireplace and sauna on the lower level. We enjoy waking up to the chirps of birds and the soothing sounds of the St. Joseph River. That is the calmness we have appreciated in our stays there. We also enjoy the rooms at the Innkeeper's Cottage off the main house. The main attraction for us are the innkeepers. Gerard and Cheryl are a wonderful couple from South Africa where they ran a game preserve. Gerard will keep you entertained for hours with stories of South Africa, the Amish, and the Inn, while Cheryl provides warm hospitality. Many weekends they also host events at the inn or elsewhere. We have been entertained by Irish folk singers, sampled wines from nearby Peterson Winery, and participated in an Amish meal with a nearby Amish family. Our travels in the surrounding countryside have included many stops in the rural Amish communities and stores, a trip to Michigan's longest covered bridge, horseback riding, the Southwest Michigan Wine Trail, canoeing, Peterson's Winery, and Shipshewana, IN, a Mennonite town. There are also golf courses, ski hills, and antique stores for those interested. The one knock on the inn could be that Gerard and Cheryl are still doing some upgrades to the inn since they purchased it from the previous owners. Each time we have been out we've seen the progress they have made, but occasionally there are small items that still need an upgrade. Just part of the charm of staying at a place with so much history. We heartily endorse the Mendon Country Inn and are certain you will enjoy your stay!

We've been going to Turtle Lake for more than 10 years on and off (wish it could be more often)…read more We've stayed in the lodge and now have a small motorhome. Both types of quarters have their qualities- just depends on how you like to vacation. There are so many things to do here! Beautiful indoor pool. Really nice tiki bar next to the "conversation pool", a rec building with pool, darts, cards... There are volleyball nets, shuffleboard, mini golf, pickleball courts and more! We've never stayed in one of the"park model" units, but they look lovely. There are dances on Saturday nights and themed weekends during the summer. We love it out here. A couple things to keep in mind: This is a FAMILY resort. There are a few families with kids. Sort of took me by surprise when we first visited, but everyone is very relaxed and take all things in stride. This is NOT a swingers place. No one is looking to "hook up". No one cares about the size of your butt or whether you have weird surgery scars. This is a place where everyone enjoys what you can't do most other places: relax, feel comfortable in your own skin and meet new friends. As a woman, I can honestly tell you I was freaked out about going the first time. We're taught to obsess about cellulite and wrinkles. I've never felt as confidant and comfortable as I do at TLR. It becomes obvious right away that no one judges you... about anything! Once you shed your clothes, no one can tell if your rich or making this the one vacation you can take every couple of years. You don't have to compare yourself with a anyone else on any level. And guys... don't worry about being aroused or embarrassed. After a little adjustment period, when you get used to people being friendly and smiling a lot, you just don't feel like you have to be someone you aren't either. You get to know people for who they are. It sounds corny, but you feel natural here. You appreciate people for what's inside. I'm still a little bummed that they don't have the motorcycle rallies anymore (such a blast!) but everything else keeps getting better here. ;) You should visit! Really! (Bring SUNSCREEN!)

It's a big resort with lots of places for tent and rustic camping (with water and electricity hook…read moreups nearby)... It's quiet and secluded, but I found it easy to get to town to grab dinner and a few small things that I had forgot. The indoor pool and hot tub were pretty popular with the regulars, and they were very welcoming of a new guest. I did notice that the hot tub was a wee bit grimy, but not too bad. Also, the women at the front desk/office we are very friendly and accommodating. There is a quota to maintain the male to female ratio, so make sure to ask when booking your reservation.
