This place was most likely outdated in the early 90's, the carpets are sticky, they fail to provide additional pillows for the pull out couch, and the bathroom was littered with hair. In the king suite - the room size was greatly minimized by the monstrosity of a built in desk apparatus. One tv on the wall, to share, somehow, with no doors separating the couch area and the sleeping area. This is on par with a much lower branding, and even they wouldn't try to pass it off as a suite. Reservations were already made for 4 months from now, when we had to be back in the area, but we will be canceling the multiple rooms and going elsewhere. You may have got the additional early check in charge this time, but overall it has cost you thousands in lost room rentals.

Every room has a private bath, flat screen tv, wifi, etc. There is a beautiful sitting room with books and games galore, which we didn't use lol. They have fridge full of pop, water, juice, etc., and homemade cookies or scones available at all times. They are also phenomenal cooks. Our breakfast must've had about 5 courses, and was better than any breakfast place I've been to in Chicago. Very impressive! They have their coffee custom roasted and blended, and it's by far the best coffee I've ever had. The people themselves are very down-to-earth and friendly. I'm not one for socializing with people, we stayed here because it was cheaper than a hotel, nicer than a hotel, and included a much better breakfast than a hotel. I was very surprised to find myself talking with them for a half hour at breakfast, and actually enjoying it! When gas becomes affordable again, we're looking forward to driving out to Middlebury and staying here again.

We attended a concert at the Blue Gate venue next door, so for convenience, we decided to stay at the Blue Gate Inn. Breakfast was what you would expect, with made-to-order omelets, waffles, and other options. We had a double-bedroom room, and the total costs was $344.99 including fees. Unfortunately, our experience was disappointing when it came to the cleanliness of the bathroom. The toilet had a BLACK rim around the inside of the top of the toilet. it was absolutely disgusting! You couldn't see it standing in front/top of toilet. It was visible when standing in bathroom doorway. This was not something that could be attributed to one missed cleaning. A toilet does not become that back without a significant buildup. A couple of days after our visit, I called Blue Gate Inn and informed a woman about the situation, including our room number. She asked if I had reported it to the front deck. We were in a hurry when we checked out, so I had not. I explained that if I owned the Inn, I would absolutely want to know about something like this so it could be addressed. She indicated that she would inform the manager and housekeeping. Several days have now passed, and I have NOT heard anything back. I wasn't necessarily expecting anything other than a response acknowledging the concern and letting me know it would be addressed. I thought that would be a reasonable expectation after bringing a cleanliness issue to management's attention. I guess I shouldn't have assumed that would happen. The location was convenient for the concert, and the Inn was beautifully decorated, but the condition of the bathroom toilet, expense of room and the lack of follow-up definitely left me disappointed.

Definitely worth a couple extra bucks. Amanda (the owner) and her family are so welcoming and make you feel right at home with an amazing breakfast. The rooms and bathrooms are incredibly clean, she brings cookies up every night and the fridge is always stocked with water and soda! The children are so precious and silly and make the rooms light up when they're around. Not even disruptive! There are movies to watch and DVD players and TVs in each room. We had the Solomon room. I'll put pictures down below. This family and business deserves everything wonderful. There's not much super close to eat so if you want a good place you may have to drive 20 or more minutes. There is a gorgeous porch out front that wraps around most of the side and is so nice to sit and just have a cup of coffee on in the mornings. Please please check this place out. It is my fourth time staying there, but first as the Van Buren Hotel. They haver taken steps backwards including charging your credit card without asking, if you check out late, one hour late. I attempted to speak to Wendy the manager but she would not come to the desk! In charging me $10 for checking out late, I assured her that my three trips per year to Shipshewana would find me staying in another hotel, rather than be nickeled and dimed based upon not checking out at 11AM. I travel 200 days per year and have for 12 years now and have never been treated like this. I wanted to let you know when traveling to the Shipshewana area, continue looking for a hotel that will not charge you for ridiculous charges. There are many very nice hotels in the area!
