Courtney's room!
Kate V.

Middlebury, Indiana should really be called Middle of Nowhere, U.S.A. However, for the recent trip my partner and I took to Illinois and Indiana (he's a Notre Dame alumni), staying at the McKenzie House was exactly the vacation that we needed. Bruce and Sherry's bed and breakfast is beyond adorable. It's not a Victorian-style b&b, rather a rustic yet classy home. There are five rooms available to stay in, each named after five of the owners' daughters (the sixth got the entire establishment named after her!). We stayed in Courtney's room, which is in a separate cottage (along with Molly's room) and has its own kitchen, dining space, and hot tub. Additionally, in the main house there are more rooms, a beautiful dining/sitting area, a den stocked with everything I wish I had growing up as a kid in my own living room (including a huge DVD selection and a popcorn machine), and a hot tub and pool (the latter opens in the warmer parts of the year). From perfect color combinations to the shabby chic wine bottle candles, everything at McKenzie House is impeccably decorated with an infinite number of unexpected little touches that make the place one-of-a-kind (Sherry's got quite an eye for those). And the BREAKFASTS are exquisite--and huge. My favorite was the homebaked raspberry cream cheese danish (pictured). Tea and coffee are available at all times of day. I don't know if you'll ever find yourself in this part of the country... I sure never thought I would. But my stay at McKenzie House was one of the most unique and relaxing vacations I've ever taken, and I'd definitely recommend it if you are visiting South Bend (40 minutes away), the Amish/Mennonite country (15 minutes away), or simply want to escape the urban craziness of Chicago (2.5 hours away) for a day or two. This is where you want to stop for the perfect rural Midwestern getaway.

This is a lovely property with a comfortable, friendly ambiance. Bruce and Sherry made us feel completely welcome. The bed was wonderful, as was the jetted tub. Breakfast was a perfect feast of fresh fruits and hot, homemade deliciousness. There wasn't a cereal box to be found, which is how we like it! We will return to this beautiful place!

We used to go here every year, back when gas was under $4/gal…read more Our room was $79/night. Luxury accommodations, cheap hotel price. This isn't your typical B&B. Every room has a private bath, flat screen tv, wifi, etc. There is a beautiful sitting room with books and games galore, which we didn't use lol. They have fridge full of pop, water, juice, etc., and homemade cookies or scones available at all times. They are also phenomenal cooks. Our breakfast must've had about 5 courses, and was better than any breakfast place I've been to in Chicago. Very impressive! They have their coffee custom roasted and blended, and it's by far the best coffee I've ever had. The people themselves are very down-to-earth and friendly. I'm not one for socializing with people, we stayed here because it was cheaper than a hotel, nicer than a hotel, and included a much better breakfast than a hotel. I was very surprised to find myself talking with them for a half hour at breakfast, and actually enjoying it! When gas becomes affordable again, we're looking forward to driving out to Middlebury and staying here again.

Dennis and Ron are consummate professionals who executed our event seamlessly. From the beginning, they were responsive, helpful, and knowledgeable. The inclusive nature of the venue made wedding planning relatively stress free - we just needed to handle the cake and photographer. The food, florals, DJ, decor, etc. were all handled through Beiger - and they were all fantastic. The food was definitely a highlight for our guests! Dennis did an amazing job keeping everything running smoothly on the day of the wedding. The mansion is stunning inside and out, which made for amazing photos and ambiance. You can tell how much thought was put into the appearance of every room. Members of our family and bridal party stayed there for a few days and loved it. It was such a beautiful place to start our marriage. Dennis and Ron were so delightful to work with. We wholeheartedly recommend them for any event -- especially a wedding!

It's homey, but it has amazing character; the owners- Ron and Dennis- have created such a beautifully designed inn with antiques, historical pieces and artwork. The breakfasts were sumptuous and filling, and the rooms were so uniquely designed. Each one was different and looked like something out of the Victorian era. Our room was quite large, with a sitting area, large bathroom with a standalone tub and shower, and a cozy fireplace. We couldn't have asked for more. I highly recommend the Beiger. I can honestly say I have never seen anything like it...

I stayed in the summer cottage, everything was decorated beautifully in antiques and every detail was attended to, from the fridge with soda, chips and chocolate, and fresh homemade brownies that waited us. The cottage is surrounded by beautiful gardens and a very friendly chonker cat named Lucy who will run up to you for pets (and might try to sneak inside the cottage if you let her). The breakfast was incredible with bacon, cheese eggs, perfectly done potatoes, and a platter of homemade pastries. The location is rural but it was close to the black pine animal sanctuary, and about 40 minutes away from Fort Wayne. It was a good springboard for all of the local breweries we planned to scope out, which there is a ridiculous amount of (or maybe not, you need something to keep you busy in these small towns).
