This is a good store, but it seems like there's a problem with management. This is my go to store when I need things from my home and I rarely don't find what I need but like many stores in the area they have big problems when it comes to being stocked for major weather events. I came to the store like many people looking to get ice melt and found a sign on the door that they would not have ice melt until 12 PM. So I went to a local Duncan's and bought some food and sat in the parking lot waiting to see a truck pull up and be prepared to get a reasonable amount and I sat there for nearly an hour and a half and then so people coming and going just like me that saw the sign and figured they would come back. Well after four or five minutes after the 12 o'clock mark, I noticed people walking to their cars from behind the store with bags of ice melt so I walked into the store and I spoke to a fella that was working in the paint department and he spoke to me and another fella and stated that well we really don't know if it's gonna come in at 12 o'clock or not. It might come in sooner. I might come in later and we were just OK with that because it was 12 o'clock at that time anyway so I hung around the store buying other products doing my policy of by in the smallest stores rather than going to the big stores like Lowe's and Home Depot. While I was hanging around talking to other customers and buying products, I noticed the fella at the paint department was taking orders for a person that just walked in the store just walked up and asked if you can get a couple bags of ice melt, and I was just really disappointed that that person saw me there knew what I was therefore looked at me talk to me and everything never told me that a truck had pulled up with the ice melt and then was apprehensive about taking an order from me because I had to get a paid slip from him to go to the front counter to get my salt. No, I'm not pitching a bitch or making a complaint but it's astounding to me that someone that works at the store would treat me in that manner and not just say hey listen just wanted to let you know that the ice melt came in and go grab a few bags and you can come in and pay for it. That is the mom and Pop feeling of a store and this guy ruined that because he should've had the courtesy of letting me know. Then when I get out in a lot as I'm going out and putting my ice melt in my truck, I noticed another van pull up with a skid of ice melt so it made me feel that they were either selling it out the back to certain people that they knew or they were just being flat out secretive about the shipment coming in either way it's not customer friendly attitude. I'm 69 years old and I've been going to that store since I was about 17 or 18 years old, not buying every single thing I ever needed there but knowing for well that when I needed something that place had it the day before I went in there and bought O-rings that nobody else would have because I knew you could go to Palmer Bros and they would have what I needed so I think people got on the stick and they got order more than they need of a product, especially in the middle of a season when you know there's gonna be other weather event events that people are gonna need the product read more

Every time I come here (only out of absolute necessity), the scenario is as follows: 6-7 workers are hanging out, chatting in small groups, ignoring the 1-2 customers there who clearly need their help. Every. Single. Time....It's like you're bothering them to give them your money. They need some serious customer service training. This particular store is not worth the time nor aggravation. PROS: For a place on a busy road their parking lot was a decent size. The place was organized and clean. The workers were knowledgeable about their products CONS: This place is nowhere near as big as other hardware stores which tells you their inventory isn't as much. The biggest problem I had was the workers. They had a bad attitude with my friend and I. We wanted a product that their website stated they had and they sternly told us that they no longer carry it and the website was inaccurate. Then they tried making us buy this new product that's only been on the market for 6 months and we didn't trust that brand so we just left. OVERALL: If you want something super simple then come here but if you are most likely needing help from an associate don't come here. Even as we were asking a representative where to find something the person couldn't hear us so the guy shouts at my friend "dude I can't hear you, speak up." Having moved to Hackensack (the next town to Palmer Ace) I needed to find a local Hardware store. I was recently at an Ace in Caldwell and I was very impressed, so when I saw Palmer Ace in River Edge I decided to try them. This store really a perfect blending of the Big Box and a local old time Hardware Store. They have decent inventory on two floors and very helpful staff. You get the feeling that you're dealing with people who actually like their job. I think their prices are competitive too. Manny walked with me to help me get what I needed on both floors. These days, how I spend my hard-earned money is more important than ever. I was happy to spend it here. read more

I've been visiting this store for years. It's convenient and also have what I've needed. I'm a big advocate of supporting small business. Staff can be a little more polite and helpful. The cashiers it's like talking to a wall. I pretty much say hello to anyone I am in contact with in the store and to find someone upstairs willing to help is like pulling teeth. Downstairs their always super friendly willing to help and give advice. Overall the store is great, clean and I wouldn't stop going to it but a refresher course on customer service would do the store good. Thank you Ace.. you guys in my book are great! read more

If you are going to buy a big green egg or any grill really, buy it here. I had a BGE that I bought 10+ years ago that broke. I couldn't get the BGE people to help despite the fact that there is a life time warranty. I gave up let it sit for another year or so and finally dropped a dime to my local Ace to get their opinion. 2 days later my warranty issue is resolved, parts delivered and I was notified. These guys just took the problem I had, made it their own and solved it. I was shocked at how fast they got it done. In a world where service generally sucks, these guys made a lifer out of me. Head and shoulders best service I have had in a long time. And I didn't even buy the grill there. I will be back and I will tell this story to anyone that will listen. I can't recommend Pamela from the ACE Hardware store enough. From day 1 when she came over to our house on Saturday morning on a very last minute notice she was so helpful in the color process throughout the whole time. Little did I know how complex color selection for a house can be and Pamela was incredible resourceful and available at any time of the day to answer our questions even if she was off her shift. She went out of the way to help and brought our samples to our house when we were not able to go to the store ourselves. Pamela is genuinely passionate about paint colors and has many years of experience to bring in. I highly recommend Pamela and her team at ACE for all your color needs. She will hold your hand throughout the whole process with her knowledge and support and your house will turn out beautiful. read more

It's a small store with selection that's much smaller than HD's, but definitely easier to get help. However, they don't participate in the yearly paint giveaway - they "don't stock" Clark-Kensington paints - and I heard their paint staff half laughing, half complaining about the people who come in with their Ace coupons for the paint while I'm right in front of them. I thought that was in somewhat bad taste, even though it wasn't malicious. With the limited selection though, I would probably go to a bigger store to make sure I get everything I need in one go. read more

Super disappointing visit earlier today. I came in to buy a Big Green Egg and waited in the Egg section for help for 15-20 minutes. I ended up pricing everything myself and walking up and down the aisles several times hoping to find someone who could help me but no luck. My plan was to ask the cashier for help but when I arrived at the cashier counter, to my surprise I found 4 teenage staff hanging out at the register arguing over what to order for lunch. I've shopped at this Ace Hardware for years since moving to the area. Always knowledgeable staff willing to answer questions and help find items. They always surprise me that a small hardware store has so much stuff, even oddball fittings, fasteners and electrical parts. Today they really went above and beyond to accommodate me when I needed some emergency parts to fix my fridge. Dave and his team were excellent especially given this crazy pandemic we're living through. Please read this review if you're looking to walk-in to a hardware with outstanding service. Earlier today I received a call filled with excitement. It was my mom. Today she was parked across the street of this hardware to go to a bagel shop and her dog jumped out of the window and some girl part of the Ace's staff saw this from inside the store and went after the dog. Thank you stranger!!! I haven't been to the store myself, but my mom called me to tell me about the kind gesture of the girl (I forgot the name but I believe is Pamela or Pauline). Now my mom says this is one of her favorite stores. Nowadays people are not looking into each other, so this employee is a great asset. Businesses should value staff members like this girl. It's not only about how much money you'll make in a week. That human factor among your people, gives you that differentiation you need in this competitive world. Not sure how your award and recognition program is here but she deserves something. At least a thank you or something to recognize this act of kindness. Again, thank you stranger. read more

Any real man needs to know where the closest hardware store is, and for this testosterone driven muscle flexing gopher threatening wolf howling man machine, this galleria of typical suburban tools and fixit things is it. Toilet chain broken? Go here. Shit rolling down the hall and sweeping away women children and pets? Google home depot or a contractor. Trick: if you don't see what you want, you can order a ton of stuff from their website, and they will ship it to the store for you to pick up for free. So if you testicles demand a 500 lbs snow blower that might normally be $$$ to ship.... You get it. I ordered like 20 metal shelves for my basement this way. Beats amazon. read more

Is it weird to review a hardware store?? Oh well... I'm pretty new to the homeowner role so I go here almost every other week or so it seems. The staff is always helpful and they have pretty much everything you could need except maybe lumber. Their selection isn't the greatest but it's much more convenient than going over to Home Depot and battling the crowds and long lines. Plus they're open on Sundays! We've ordered online a few times and had stuff shipped to the store for free shipping and this has worked out very well. Their garden/lawn section could use a bigger selection but it's not a big store so there's a tradeoff for convenience. read more

This is my local hardware store and about a million times more helpful that the other two 'big guys'. My go to place for plumbing, nuts/bolts and the ONLY place I will go to for paint. Not only do they carry the best Benjamin Moore low and no VOC paints - the staff also is awesome at paint matching and suggesting the right finish. Prices are a bit higher on some things though. I wouldn't buy light bulbs here or gardening items unless I was in a jam - which does happen. Great service and the staff could not be any more helpful. read more

I walked into the store a few days ago expecting a helpful environment. I went to the counter in the back to get some paint and the lady there with red hair told me I needed to do a color consultation for her to help me pick a color. Why would I have to do that, why can't I get the color I want. Then I proceeded to the checkout and was greeted by a rude girl with a name tag that said Megan. Ok....what happened to this place?! I am so disappointed. I've been coming to this store for the past 30 years for all my home needs. Last 2 visits were terrible! All the familiar faces are gone, along with their expertise. No help whatsoever from anyone. Girls at the front needed to page 3 times (store was empty) for someone to help me. 20 mins later some teenager snotty jerk came & was obnoxious as hell. Very condescending and rude. Went recently for paint & had a similar experience...I usually get the Clark & Kensington (Ace brand) color matched to the Benjamin Moore color I like. Paint guy kept pushing the Ben Moore on me until I finally said I just want the C&K! He told me they "store it in the basement now because no one wants that stuff." Oh realllllyyyy???? Am I a moron? So sad that this place has gone downhill so far so fast. Girls at front used to be so kind & helpful, Not anymore...sitting in their stools, feet up on counter, texting away. Good luck! I've been there a few times. If you can't find your size screw or the type of material you're looking for at your big box hardware shop then come here. They have all sizes of screws. The staff was very helpful. Worst thing about them is their hours. Closed at 6pm weekdays and 2pm on Saturdays. Makes my visits quite limited. read more

Spoke to 4 or 5 (maybe it was more) people,each one more incompetent than the other. Finally decided to just cancel the order out of sheer frustration .NO ONE COULD DO THAT!! Maybe in a few days they said. I got on a 3 way call with them and my credit card company. They wouldn't give the credit card company the info to reverse the charge. Maybe in a few days. Great classic hardware store. I have been going there for 30 years and much prefer it to the big box places. The staff is hugely knowledgeable. I have gone there to buy plumbing fixtures only to have a person in the know sell me a washer and tool for a fraction of the price. Some of that small town hardware store feel is gone now that it is ACE branded but it still beats Lowes and HD. Great paint department. One of the younger adults working paint can have an attitude but mostly everyone is great and they have what you need 90% of the time. read more

They are really good about letting you just browse on those days that you know you need something but not sure what. Another reviewer somewhere mentioned an unwelcome feeling when they use coupons, but I have not had that experience at all. I had to redo a bedroom after my daughter and her husband moved out, the room was trashed, I mean this literally,big holes in the walls, filth everywhere. My son said he'd seen cleaner crack houses. So off I went to Palmers after going to Lowes and Home depot just try to get someone to spend more then 5 minutes with you. I spent an hour looking at those little paint cards with a piece of my drapery material. I had been asked several times if I needed help and I had refused,how hard could this be?. Ever say a word so many times it does'nt make sense anymore. My confusion and frustration was monumental. Finally I asked for help, they asked me a few questions such as what mood I was going for, what colors did I like, I showed them the piece of fabric they produced this color wheel by Benjamin Moore-affinity colors. Every color matches with every other color on the wheel, Eric helped me pick out two colors one for a focus wall where the drapes where going, and one for the other 3 walls. It is perfection, I now know why you go to a local hardware store. read more

I have been going to the Palmer Ace Hardware store in River Edge for nearly 30 years and was never insulted and always received good help. I have never had any issues and everyone has always been polite and courteous. I have purchased merchandise from them without any issues throughout this time. Recently there is an older man who works there who is the nastiest man I have ever come across. He went out of his way at least three times to humiliate me on separate occasions and is not helpful whatsoever. If you can't explain exactly what you need, he will go out of his way to try and make you feel like an idiot by making hand gestures and opening his eyes wide and stating "come on, come on, give me more..." I have had to look online for the items I needed as he is rude, obnoxious and thinks he knows it all. I have dreaded having him help me. I miss the people they used to have in the store. This man is insulting and looks for an argument each and every time I enter that store. They have lost a good and valued customer. I will never enter that store again. I have found other hardware stores with more merchandise choices and much better customer service. I would never recommend this store to anyone. When I called to speak to the manager, he started to make excuses for him. I have a background working in retail and I assure you, this is NOT the way to treat a customer. read more
