It is not a huge store, but I must say it has a lot of stuff (toys/tools/gadgets, etc). Any guy would spend a good amount of time getting lost looking around at all the "stuff" here as I did. I thankfully behaved myself, and did not go on a wild shopping spree. When I finally made it to the counter, the person who helped me was very knowledgeable, and handy. He duplicated a couple sets of keys perfectly. He did not even need to take them out of my car key ring. The sets he made up he had placed in its own key ring rather than just throw them all at me, and mix the keys up. He was also honest, and saved me some money with another request of mine that I did not need to get done. I like honesty, it's a great virtue. FYI: Parking in this area is metered with high tech sensors, and camera. Pay the meter, or pay the ticket.

The salesperson at G&S Hardware knew EXACTLY what I needed and was so professional and knowledgeable. Now, I don't know the difference between a screw, nut or bolt. So, I was at the mercy of anyone who did. But, I took the remaining "sister" of whatever (nut, bolt, screw) with me to show the person at the hardware store what I needed. I had gone to Home Depot in Hackensack (because I "thought" it would have this missing unique screw, bolt or whatever (from a pair) for some equipment. When I was directed to the "Hardware" aisle, the salesperson didn't know what the heck I was talking about. I showed him the other piece and he galumped to some generic machine screws and handed them to me. I paid for them but I wanted the exact mate of the hardware that was missing. It didn't match the remaining hardware and I was not satisfied (even for this seemingly small item) So, I drove to G&S Hardware on Hudson Street in Hackensack. Rich was the salesperson (more like a connoisseur) and immediately knew what the missing hardware was and went to a small bin to get one for me. It cost me three times less than what I paid for at Home Depot. He told me it was a "T-nut". Now, I have two identical T-nuts for the equipment. Home Depot could not have cared less and didn't know what I wanted. G&S (Rich) did. In this case, it wasn't about the cheap prices at Home Depot, it was the lack of knowledge (and caring) in the Home Depot staff. If you want a knowledgeable and personal experience at a GREAT hardware store, go to G&S Hardware, PERIOD!!

Since the store is a bit small, it might not have EVERYTHING that you are looking for, but it's worth a shot if you are in the area. Also, since the store is a bit on the small side, you probably will not have to worry about huge, long lines (something that I hate when making a quick errand). Overall, I thought the prices, at least for the things I purchased, were well in line with other places in NYC (eg Target or Home Depot). Fine, but why does your receipt say to bring back the original packaging if you mean it must be unopened? Limited selection and high prices are bad enough, but the consistently grouchy service really seals the deal for a solid two stars.
