This place is very close to where I live and my friends and I've been wanting to try it, particular for their Jolof. Came in here for a take out order and I feel like the young girl (possibly the owner's daughter) didn't have the best social interaction skills with customers. We had a few questions and she struggled to answer them. We were told to wait 15 minutes after we ordered and received our food shortly. The food was excellent. We both enjoyed it and there was this red sauce on the side that was spicy but went so well with the chicken. I do feel that they should have the pricing in their menus though. We had to ask the girl how much everything was and it also changed it price depending on if we were paying with cash or card. Just seemed odd. Also, our Jolo chicken and rice plate came out to like $24 which I found to be very overpriced considering it was a lot of rice. I don't think I'd frequent this place often based on the high prices, however our food was delicious.

NO MICROWAVED FOOD!!! Went in wanting to try the jollof rice w/chicken. I got a plate of microwave d leftovers for 24$! The chicken had to be at least 2 days old. I would strongly suggest avoiding this place, until they decide to respect their customers.

I haven't had Ghanaian food since the passing of my father over 10 years ago. In my city there are zero Ghanaian restaurants, mostly Nigerian restaurants, so being able to eat authentic Ghanaian food was a godsend. The restaurant is located in a very non descript strip mall area about a block from Montrose and a block from the J Edgar Hoover Community College. The sign is faded and the interior of the restaurant is pretty dry as if it wasn't meant for sit down meals. As expected with African restaurants the menu did not have a price, which means the lady can basically charge you what she feels. I suspect if I looked more Ghanaian or spoke Twi, our meal would have not been so expensive. There was four of us, me, my husband and two daughters. Two of us ordered palm soup with fish and the other two ordered peanut soup. For my morsel I picked fufu and one of my daughters picked glutenous rice ball and the husband just had white rice with his soup. Overall the whole family was satisfied with their meal. I felt my palm soup missed vegetables other than one little piece of whole okra. I suppose I could've also asked for a little more heat to the soup. In the end it didn't send a shock wave of nostalgia over me, but it was a good meal. The lady who was there ran everything, meaning payment, serving, cleaning, bussing. Overall I may return, but it was a bit expensive...remember there's no price on the menu so basically she just yells out a total when you are ready for your check.

Although I was looking forward to trying this African cuisine and the food was good overall... I was shocked to come see the comments here afterwards and it made sense why the prices were ridiculously high. My suspicions appear to be true regarding charging higher prices on what seems to be based on the color of my skin. The service was poor and my friend and I were mostly ignored for a prolonged time until eventually we asked for the check so that we could depart after being ready to go for quite some time. The inside of the restaurant is a bit dingy and not at all aesthetically pleasing.

This is a small but mighty neighborhood eatery featuring West African cuisine. I went for the Ghanaian fare and was pleasantly surprised at how good the food was.

After reading the reviews and looking at the pictures on Yelp, I've decided to visit this restaurant to try some Ghanaian dishes. Upon entering, you will not be greeted or offered a seat and a menu. You have to get those yourself. You will have to wait a while for someone to take your order and to bring you food. There will be a feeling like you are visiting your aunty who is very mad with you, your parents and the rest of the world. If you enjoy the kind of feeling, step right in! The menu doesn't have prices, and if you ask ahead of time, it will be estimated based on your appearance and whether you pay with cash or card. I guess we looked pretty fancy because our verbal bill was $74 for three dishes and three water bottles (you won't be offered tap water here either). We had fufu, jollof rice, and a fish plate. The dishes were delicious, although all fried and super unhealthy I'm sure, but no one cared as we came in for emotional, physical, and financial abuse, and along with tasting comfort food from another culture, we had all our needs met.

Fufu made of plantain! It was so good with the palm nut soup!!!!

I had fufu (made with plantain) alongside Palm Nut soup with mackerel and goat. Wow! The fufu was perfectly warm and soft, my dream!!!! I loved the mackerel in the soup. I also liked the surprises like the one whole okra in the soup, and the dollop/mound of grated ginger on top. Overall, it was a great experience and I will be back (with my sister since she likes African food too). I believe I was the last dine-in customer that day. Nice dinner on a cold day.

My favorite place for authentic Ghanaian food. The food is always filling and very delicious. They are cash only, FYI. I love the jollof, the snapper comes whole, and the plantains are always the perfect amount of ripe. The pepper sauce is reeeeeeeal spicy so only try if you're a G!

First time trying Ghanaian food and it was delicious. My friend had the fried fish and fried yams which came with two sauces. I had the beef, plantains and the jollof rice. The food was wonderful and the service was very hospitable. I am definitely coming back to try other things. The owner thanked me on the way out and said you again soon.

About a 2-2.5: My friend and I came to Palace Gate Restaurant to try out their Ghanian offerings. The restaurant offers different types of appetizers (wings and kabobs), soup, stew (fish, beef, turkey, or spinach), fufuo, banku, ampesi, waakye, rish dishes, as well as lunch specials during the week. I tried the beef with a slide of plantains and jollof rice; the beef was okay, but it was more on the bland side; from the looks of it, I thought it would have been a bit more savory. The side of plantains were just okay, but slightly undercooked. The jollof rice, while plentiful, was extremely pungent in its scent - I wasn't sure if it was the amount of the spices used or some soup stock that was used to cook the jollof rice in, but it didn't smell or taste appetizing! The place itself was bright and cheery, and it seems like a hidden gem. I am glad I was able to give Palace Gate a try, but not sure if I'd go back! +Ghanian offerings +undercooked plantains +pungent jollof rice

    Just try it already

We made a reservation for the drag brunch as part of my friend's bachelorette weekend. When we arrived, we were seated in a side room that had no other guests. The show was clearly happening in the main room, which was busy and had a fun atmosphere. Being placed away from the event felt very misguided and significantly impacted our enjoyment. We persistently asked to be moved into the main room, and about an hour in, we finally were. From that point, our experience improved vastly. I had an espresso martini and avocado toast. The drink was excellent, but the avocado toast was a bit soggy. I'm giving three stars because I appreciate that they eventually moved us into the main room, the drag queens made a decent effort, and the drinks were good. Lark should simply be upfront and decline reservations if they don't have space in the main room.

You enter through a front room with a long bar before moving into the main dining area, which is lined with large windows. Warm wood paneling and colorful graphics give the space an inviting, energetic feel. Our server was excellent--friendly and attentive--and both the owner and a manager stopped by during the evening to check in, which was appreciated. Felix has an extensive cocktail menu, and servers were busy delivering trays of beautiful drinks throughout the night. I ordered the Windy City Sunset mocktail, while my husband chose the Smokey Old Fashioned. Both were very good. The food, however, was more of a mixed bag. We started with the meatballs for the table; unfortunately, they were overcooked and hard, and even the marinara sauce couldn't save them from being dry and unappetizing. I ordered the bacon cheeseburger, which was delicious and generously sized--easily enough for two meals. My husband ordered the chicken Parmesan with a side of pasta and found the chicken somewhat dry. Our friends ordered a pasta dish to share, though they didn't eat much of it while tending to their very well-behaved six-month-old. While the bar and dining room are attractive, the bathroom was a major disappointment--dirty and unkempt, especially considering it was early in the evening (around 6 p.m.), not late enough to excuse the condition. The owners and staff are genuinely kind, and the menu shows a lot of promise. At the moment, though, the food doesn't quite live up to what they're serving at Bites. I hope Felix can work out some of the inconsistencies and find success--it certainly has the potential. I would like to give Felix 3.5-stars, but Yelp does not accommodate this option.
