I have been a loyal customer of Palace Gate for many years, but after my experience today, I will never step foot in this building again. It is heartbreaking and infuriating to see how little loyalty matters to this establishment. The owner and a woman working there completely lost their minds because I didn't leave a tip on this occasion. They didn't just get upset; they humiliated and insulted me in front of the entire restaurant. The woman was so aggressive she nearly slapped me. It is shameful that after years of supporting this business, the owner would turn on a regular customer with such violence and disrespect. My husband and I were craving Joloff rice so we picked up some food from here today. We had the Joloff rice, plantains, chicken and beef combo. The sweet girl that worked there, most likely one of the daughters of the owner asked if I wanted to try the puff puff. The food was delicious!! We ate everything and were super satisfied. I loved the Joloff rice because it had the perfect amount of spice and the texture was great. I'm glad they suggested to try puff puff. Overall Thoughts: This is a small, homey family restaurant serving up traditional, delicious Ghanaian dishes. There was only one other party there when we came for dinner on a Sunday. My only suggestions are around the menu... it's pretty hard to navigate if you have no prior knowledge of or experience trying Ghanaian cuisine, as there are no descriptions or even prices on the menu. It would've definitely been helpful to know the prices before ordering, but the prices seemed overall reasonable when we got the receipt at the end. The server (who seemed to be the owner's daughter) helped answer any questions we had, and the food came out pretty quick. Otherwise, the food is wonderful and bursting with flavor-- would totally recommend! Food I tried: - Kenkey with Fish (4.7/5): I liked this dish best out of everything we ordered. The kenkey itself had great starchy, umami flavor, and its soft, mushy texture paired perfectly with the fish which was crispy, well-fried, and flavorful. Combined the spicy shito and onions and neutral tomato, all the flavors came together perfectly. - Beans (Red Red) with Egg and Plantains (4.5/5): There weren't a lot of vegetarian options on the menu, but this dish was a delicious, filling option. The beans were full of flavor and the plantains were some of the best I've ever had-- they were perfectly fried and the oil brought out their maximal sweetness and softness. - Jollof Rice with Chicken (4.6/5): This was another favorite dish. The jollof was full of spice and flavor, and comes with plantains and your choice of protein. The chicken was super tender and fell off the bone; doused in flavorful sauce, the flavors were robust and hearty. - Peanut Soup with Rice Ball (3.6/5): I wasn't a huge fan of the peanut soup here... It wasn't as peanut buttery as I would've hoped, but I recommend getting the rice ball with it, if you order this dish. Palace Gate is where I had my first Ghanaian food experience a few years back and I've returned many times since then. Everything tastes like a comforting home-cooked meal. My personal favorite is the red red (beans), which is extremely flavorful. And, of course, you can't go wrong with the chicken and jollof rice. They also have this smoky chili sauce that's spectacular and goes well with everything. Honorable mention goes to the fried fish (also complemented well by the chili). This place is very close to where I live and my friends and I've been wanting to try it, particular for their Jolof. Came in here for a take out order and I feel like the young girl (possibly the owner's daughter) didn't have the best social interaction skills with customers. We had a few questions and she struggled to answer them. We were told to wait 15 minutes after we ordered and received our food shortly. The food was excellent. We both enjoyed it and there was this red sauce on the side that was spicy but went so well with the chicken. I do feel that they should have the pricing in their menus though. We had to ask the girl how much everything was and it also changed it price depending on if we were paying with cash or card. Just seemed odd. I haven't had Ghanaian food since the passing of my father over 10 years ago. In my city there are zero Ghanaian restaurants, mostly Nigerian restaurants, so being able to eat authentic Ghanaian food was a godsend. The restaurant is located in a very non descript strip mall area about a block from Montrose and a block from the J Edgar Hoover Community College. The sign is faded and the interior of the restaurant is pretty dry as if it wasn't meant for sit down meals. As expected with African restaurants the menu did not have a price, which means the lady can basically charge you what she feels. I suspect if I looked more Ghanaian or spoke Twi, our meal would have not been so expensive. There was four of us, me, my husband and two daughters. Two of us ordered palm soup with fish and the other two ordered peanut soup. For my morsel I picked fufu and one of my daughters picked glutenous rice ball and the husband just had white rice with his soup. Overall the whole family was satisfied with their meal. I felt my palm soup missed vegetables other than one little piece of whole okra. I suppose I could've also asked for a little more heat to the soup. In the end it didn't send a shock wave of nostalgia over me, but it was a good meal. The lady who was there ran everything, meaning payment, serving, cleaning, bussing. I was shocked to come see the comments here afterwards and it made sense why the prices were ridiculously high. My suspicions appear to be true regarding charging higher prices on what seems to be based on the color of my skin. The service was poor and my friend and I were mostly ignored for a prolonged time until eventually we asked for the check so that we could depart after being ready to go for quite some time. After reading the reviews and looking at the pictures on Yelp, I've decided to visit this restaurant to try some Ghanaian dishes. Upon entering, you will not be greeted or offered a seat and a menu. You have to get those yourself. You will have to wait a while for someone to take your order and to bring you food. There will be a feeling like you are visiting your aunty who is very mad with you, your parents and the rest of the world. If you enjoy the kind of feeling, step right in! The menu doesn't have prices, and if you ask ahead of time, it will be estimated based on your appearance and whether you pay with cash or card. I guess we looked pretty fancy because our verbal bill was $74 for three dishes and three water bottles (you won't be offered tap water here either). We had fufu, jollof rice, and a fish plate. Went here because someone who loves West African food suggested it. I'm a vegetarian and have not had great experiences with West African food but gave it a try, since they were paying. The name of the place is pretty ironic since the inside is as far from palatial as you could imagine. It was cluttered and unpleasant: bills and paperwork stacked in the corner like someone's auntie's house or something like that. As people mentioned, the menu has no prices and they are just made up on the spot, which is just... bizarre to me. The food was mostly starch and oil-- rice, plantain with a side of stew. The rice was dry and clumped, did not taste fresh. Stew was ok, plantains ok. A plate of that was $20. Thankfully I did not pay for this meal, I would have been even more pissed off. I love this restaurant! It's some of the best I've ever had, and I've tried Ghanian food in a number of cities around the US and London. The flavors here are rich and the spicy dishes are not shy. Now, this restaurant isn't for everyone. Some of the dishes are pungent, and that's on purpose. Ghanian food uses ingredients such as: fermented masa, dried shrimp, and bright red palm oil, just to name a few. Americans are very used to a form of service that isn't as common in other parts of the world. At this restaurant, you're getting an authentic experience. There's not many staff, the chef in the back is very sweet but she's got jokes and isn't afraid to coerce your meal choice, and the place isn't fancy and polished. There's also no prices on the menu. Lots of people on here say that's so they can gouge the caucasian or non-Ghanian customers. Maybe. One reviewer on here complained about their Jollof Rice costing $15 in 2010. I ordered Jollof Rice with beef and shito spice paste this week and was charged $16, ten years later. I also got so much food that I couldn't finish it all if I tried, and the depth and intense flavors were incredible. Ever seen a recipe for Jollof Rice and all the fixins? About a 2-2.5: My friend and I came to Palace Gate Restaurant to try out their Ghanian offerings. The restaurant offers different types of appetizers (wings and kabobs), soup, stew (fish, beef, turkey, or spinach), fufuo, banku, ampesi, waakye, rish dishes, as well as lunch specials during the week. I tried the beef with a slide of plantains and jollof rice; the beef was okay, but it was more on the bland side; from the looks of it, I thought it would have been a bit more savory. The side of plantains were just okay, but slightly undercooked. The jollof rice, while plentiful, was extremely pungent in its scent - I wasn't sure if it was the amount of the spices used or some soup stock that was used to cook the jollof rice in, but it didn't smell or taste appetizing! The place itself was bright and cheery, and it seems like a hidden gem. If I had to sum up a review of this place in one word, it would be WOW! I have been to Palace Gate Restaurant twice and each time I feel like I have gone back to Accra or to Kumasi. Waakye with fried fish and spaghetti with red sauce. Having had some waakye at a Ghanaian restaurant in Washington, DC, I had a hankering for some in Chicago. I've been here a few times before, so I figured it was finally time to leave a review! I decided to bring a friend by here after a day of intense dance lessons (we learned various African dances,so I figured it be nice to end the night by gaining back all of the calories we'd lost haha). I've tried a number of different Ghanian places and I can honestly say that this one is probably the most consistent! I try to get a new dish every time I go, and I have yet to be let down! Now first things first! This is a place where most of the patrons are frequent customers, so as soon as they walk in you can tell who's new and who's not haha. I said that to say come here for the food and not necessarily the service haha. So we sit down(choose your own table), and menus are already on the table. There are no prices on the menu, but everything generally costs the same price in the end. A young girl comes over and ask a if we're ready to order to which we reply yes. We order our food, continue our conversation and occasionally glance at the movie that was on the screen. Now things are made to order, so either have some good conversation topics or just know that you'll need your patience. At the table you'll notice that there are various soaps on the table (hand sanitizer, regular hand soap, etc). They'll also bring out a bowl of warm water for you to wash your hands. The bathroom is through the kitchen, so rather than have tons of folks awkwardly passing through the kitchen, you can wash your hands at your own leisure right there at the table. So after a few minutes the food is out, and it looks great! My friend ordered the jollof rice with fish and fried plantains and I ordered boiled plantain with stew! Portions here are always plentiful, so the wait time is well worth it! We both shared each of the dishes and were definitely pleased with each of the meals. The boiled plantain dish offered a variety of different flavors and textures which I thought was interestingly good! The jollof rice with rice is a simple yet hearty dish which can always be go meal. A nicely fried whole tilapia with a plate full of rice and a half a plate of plantains. We stayed for about another hour or so just enjoying the food and conversation and we never felt rushed or pressured to leave which I appreciated! So as I mentioned before, you'll notice quickly who the regulars are as they come through the door yelling various peoples names haha. This can be offsetting for some, but I promise it's nothing to worry about. The cook can also seem a little rough around the edges at times, but I promise she's super nice and pleasant and has a great smile! She even shared tips about how to perfectly cook ripe plantains! "EAT AT YOUR OWN RISK & DEMAND PRICES" The food was excellent, it brought me back to my time in Ghana. The atmosphere was casual and it reminded me of eating at the night market in Accra. Unfortunately for me, the color of my skin (white) was not a positive attribute in this restaurant on this specific day. My friend is in town from Ghana and she wanted to try a Ghanaian restaurant. I searched yelp to find one with good reviews, and I decided on Palace Gate. The reviews were mainly positive, and we decided to give it a try. The menu is simple and there are no prices listed. We all ordered jollof rice but the waitress insisted we change our order. She insisted we change but everyone was pretty firm. I obliged and offered to have less rice and a few more plantains. My Ghanaian friend exchanged quite a few words in Twi with the waitress and everyone was friendly and joking. Later, I found out that my friend asked 3 times for prices on the items, but the waitress shamed her into silence about her questioning, by telling her that she should not be so concerned. Jump ahead... there was no bill, she just came over and demanded $60 from us for the food. When I protested that I knew she was over-charging us she casual touched my 4 year old winter coat and said, "You are a rich girl! Are you married? If not, I will give you to my brother!" I politely told her that I was a "working-girl" and that I never spend this much on a meal, and definitely not on a plate of rice. 100% of the patrons were cab drivers. Which is great because that means the food tastes just like it does back in Ghana. This also means that we were not dining in an expensive restaurant... unless prices are different for different people... duh! I paid and we left. What can you do? It is truly unfortunate that they viewed me as a dollar sign and nothing else. It makes better business sense to treat me well and ask fair prices so that I would return for more. Instead, they took advantage of me only once and will never see me again. Palace Gate Restaurant receives "one-star" due to their lack of respect for people that are different from them. All of the clientele were Ghanaian that evening and I think it is a travesty that we must be so segregated. If we learned to treat each other with respect we could learn a lot from others. What an experience. As I sat down and picked up the menu with no prices, the proprietor asked me if "I'd be having the same as yesterday". Apparently I'm "generic Indian guy". This has happened before. After replying that I'd never eaten Ghanian (or is it ghanese?) food before, she told me "ok, so you'll have jallof rice, beef, and spinach", before I could even ask what was good.... and this was. The rice was super spicy, the beef was tasty, and the spinach was like spinach curry. All in all, fantastic. Meanwhile, I watched ghanian movies with the other customers; this one was about a little fat Ghanian kid getting in all sorts of mischief. And the price.. my meal ended up being $8. I have mixed feelings about this place. As in other reviews there are no prices listed so you know the 'familiar' folks get one price and the 'foreign' folks get another price. They also don't like you to share dishes so you must order dinners and there was plenty of food to go around. The food was really good for my first try at Ghanaian food. I tried the beef stew with plantains and beans and my friend had the Jollof rice with chicken. Both were spicy and they added additional spice to the side if you wanted more heat! This place rules. I've eaten here 3 times over the last 3 years (the most recent time being last night) and I've never had a bad experience (and not much has changed over time!). Different? Absolutely. Worth it? Absolutely. I've always received fair to good service, but I take any "fair" service to be a cultural difference in the way things are done in Ghana vs in the USA (I've never been to Ghana, but I can only imagine). Totally fine with me--the staff have always been friendly and kind, even at the most minimal level. The food has been nothing short of amazing each time I've eaten here. I've tried about 3 or 4 different dishes (I admit I love to just order my favorites every time I eat here--my favorites are the Jolof Rice with Chicken and the Red Red beans with THE BEST sweet fried Plantains, or maduros as I like to call them)--but I love tasting bites of my friends' entrees. The whole tilapia is also very tasty if you're into that sorta thing. True; they do not include prices in their menus. So what? Do they charge you more if you're white or not Ghanaian or not a cabbie? Probably. But so what? The food is STILL ridiculously cheap with gigantic portions--you can afford it. To my recollection, I've never paid more than $13-$15 for a plate. Last night, our entrees were $11 and $13, including 2 bottles of water, which they give you automatically. I think most people willing to eat dinner out at a restaurant can handle these kinds of prices for the value. It feels like a delicious, authentic home-cooked meal was made just for you! I've never felt the need to bargain for my meal here, and I would probably never do that. I'm happy to support them with my money and my business. And, hey, it's an authentic Ghanaian joint--let them operate as Ghanaian as they want! If you decide to eat here, just come with an open mind and come with no expectations except to have a really great, tasty meal. This was the first time I had Ghanaian food and really don't know that I can compare against other Ghanaian places...especially since there aren't many around. The menu is rather short and simple. However, if you don't know what you are looking at, the guy the owns the place will be happy to answer questions that you have. I picked Jollaf rice, as it seemed like a good intro dish to Ghanaian food. He recommended the fried plantain to go with it. It came with a hard boiled egg, but I don't like hard boiled eggs and gave it away. I picked beef as my meat option to go with the rice. The dish was actually quite good and the portion was big enough to make a lunch the next with the left overs. If it was so go, why did I give 3 stars? Like most every other review, I was a bit taken back with not having prices on the menu. When I read the reviews, each time a review was written, the prices kept going up. Well, they are up to $12 for that one dish. Seriously, rice is about as cheap as can be. Yes, it was quite good, but not $12 good. I can say that the entree is big enough for two people to eat off of and be happy. If that was some fancy place, I could understand...it's not. In my opinion, if they cut the portions in half, lowered the price and offered maybe another appetizer or sort, they would probably have more customers. But, I'm not from Ghana and don't know if their food goes beyond that? It's worth going for the experience and trying something new. This was an awesome, laid back restaurant. This is the first time I have had Ghanian food, and it was really a fun experience. First of all I should start off by saying that I am no expert on any type of African food, but I really enjoyed my meal. The staff was super friendly, and happily helped me choose a dish to try. I got Banku which is a spicy stew that you dip cornmeal into and eat. You wash your hands first before eating, and then use your fingers to dip cornmeal into the stew to eat it. It was very tasty! The atmosphere of this place is super casual. I had to ask the staff for our bill because they were very laid back and wanted us to feel welcome to stay for as long as we wished in the restaurant. I liked this relaxed attitude, it's out of the norm and It's fun to hang out with the other patrons and watch movies from Ghana and chat. I'm a huge fan of traditional African cuisine so my wife and I were looking forward to coming here. It definitely has a "hole in the wall" kind of vibe. I suppose this review will be an amalgamation of everything that has already been written, but whatever. Turn on: the comfy, unpretentious atmosphere. Turn off: the rather long time we waited just to be greeted. Turn on: the well-cooked plantains, jollof rice, and tilapia soup we ordered. Turn off: the noises my stomach made itching for that food to come! Turn on: the elderly gentleman who coached me on how to eat the fufu. Definitely 100% authentic Ghanaian food and drink. Very Ghanaian (African) in atmosphere too. If you are white and/or not a regular be prepared to pay $12 per dish/entree, no mater what you order. And about $1.50 - $2.00 for a bottled drink. Every dish includes a bottle of water. They do take credit cards. Be prepared for very very spicy food. We had younger kids with us and asked for less shito and spice in their food and it was still really hot, especially for them.
