I have visited this store two times and it was a bit awkward. First time we did get there late to closing and so they were trying to just get us out. Understanding. But we came a second time looking for Heroclix specifically as we had called earlier on the phone and was told they have. But once in the store we were told they don't, that they can see something in the system that says it but has no price. They didn't bother to check the back and pretty much was unwilling to help as he said he has no idea what it is. Cool place but from what they mentioned seems they prefer their regulars. read more

Man, this place is wonderful! Of all the game stores I have visited (and I have visited many stores in multiple states), Pair A Dice Games features probably the most extensive collection of games I have seen. I could just stare at the shelves for hours and be intrigued. The service was also outstanding, as they expressed a willingness to find what I was seeking. Having said that, like many stores, the prices are at retail. I do try (when I can) to support local game stores, so paying retail isn't a huge concern for me (but I mention this just to set expectations). All in all, I wish that I lived closer to this store because I know I'd spend a lot of time there! read more

Best selection south of LA. Staff is always friendly to help with finding a game. Whether you know what you're looking for or for recommendations. Decent selection of demo games as well. That's how they sold me on two games! There's parking in the front that's shared with an in-n-out. So it can be awkward. But there's also parking in the rear. Dog friendly, as long as you either carry your dog or have a stroller. Large playing area that they have weekly game nights. But always room for demo play as well. Play area isn't too strict on food or drink, which is smart because there's also a Lil' Ceasar in the same plaza. Obviously it's being courteous with games and not dirtying them. They also sell drinks behind the counter just in case you're in a long game and don't want to leave. Prices are like any other FLGS. I just started playing magic the gathering. My son told me about this store and we went. I was amazed by the selection and knowledge of the employees and the costumers also have a wealth of knowledge. Tuesday night command play is fun and exciting. I will come to pair a dice games for all my gaming needs. They have it all there and it's great for beginners to learn about the different games that are not behind a TV and have interactions with other people. It is possible to go in for one item and start talking about games for hours. Anyone who is thinking about playing any type of board games or card games should stop by and see what they have. This place is okay at best - twice now Ive gone in to buy some single MTG cards and had someone online purchase a card out from under me, even though I had requested to purchase the card before the online transaction had been made. I know this as a fact because staff have gone to ring me up and informed me that the card had ~just~ been purchased (wtf bro, you can't cancel the transaction and give it to the guy who clearly had priority?). Definitely a bit annoying to say the least... I think what really does it though is their price mark-up. I understand having to stay afloat in a market that competes with online retail, but this shop's msrp markup is ATROCIOUS. Down the street, quite literally, you can pick-up a box of the new MTG Wilds of Eldraine set boosters for $120, that same product will cost you $175 at this store. And it's consistent across the board - all booster packs, and generally single cards, are consistently $2-3 more than Kingslayer in Oceanside. The WOE Commander decks are $20 more than Kingslayer or Target (instead of spending $60 on a commander precon at this place I went over to the Target across the freeway and spent $40 for the same deck lol). I want to support my local small businesses, but not when it costs me 30% more than the big box retailer. The only edge this place has on the aforementioned competitor store (Kingslayer) is inventory for both MTG singles and sealed product. Kingslayer still has a great selection of both, just not quite as much. I honestly dont think Ill be spending anymore money here and Ill just go over to Kingslayer, or buy singles Im looking for off the internet if Kingslayer doesnt have them. Lastly, the guys who run Kingslayer are normal and easy to talk to; however, the people at this store are uncomfortable and awkward at best, and obnoxious at worst. Ive had some incredibly uncomfortable attempts at conversation with Pair-a-Dice's staff. They really need some coaching on social interactions because sheesh, it's cringe. read more

My husband and I have had nothing but good experiences here. We prefer to buy from them even though we could buy games cheaper online because they will talk you through game play, offer recommendations based on other games you like, and are always very nice and helpful. We want a place like Pair A Dice to stick around for the community! My husband is signed up for the rewards program and gets their emails which he says offers specials and deals regularly. We haven't gotten into any of the in-store gaming, but it's nice to know it's there and there's always at least a few people there. P. S. This store isn't only for hardcore gamers. This place has been on my radar since I got to San Diego, but I found the drive daunting, so I was waiting until I had a reason to head up to check it out. Fortunately, they were hosting Free RPG Day this year, which I wouldn't miss for the world. Location aside, this store is absolutely amazing. I walked in and just knew right away that I was in the right place. It might have something to do with the 1st Edition AD&D books high above the checkout counter, or maybe it was the fact that the staff actually seemed interested in talking to people and providing customer service. Most game stores treat their customers the way heroin dealers treat customers they don't particularly like, so being greeted with a smile is strange enough--but to be greeted with a smile while being given free stuff? Madness! (Okay, so I don't actually know any heroin dealers. At least that I know of. Maybe they're very nice people. You get my point.) I had to ask if the 1st Ed books were trophies or sale items, and they are apparently the owner's private collection, which he just likes to show off. But they have huge shelves full of used game books, which you almost never see anymore. Those shelves included several 1st Ed books, lots of 2e including Skills & Powers if you can believe that, old V:tM and M:tA, even 1st & 2nd Ed Shadowrun--including, but not limited to, a sealed copy of Downtown Militarized Zone. I mean ... zounds! Additionally, the store has a loyalty club, which provides gift certificates at reasonable spending/promotional intervals. This is cool in and of itself, but most notably because I've never even heard of such a thing at a game store. I love the idea. Finally, there's a decently sized play space, and from some of the conversations I had with my fellow FRPGD attendees, it's commonly used by a group of gamers known as the "Fantatical Gamers Society," which despite their name are reportedly a fairly laidback sort, big on community and having fun. This place is awesome. I won't claim that I'll be taking the 45-minute trek from downtown SD on a regular basis, but I'll certainly use any jaunt to the north as an excuse to stop in.
