Take a great artist/instructor, a couple of fantastic support staff, one cool summer evening on the patio.... add that to a birthday celebration, 20 of your best friends, throw in some fantastic pot luck, generous amounts of liquid refreshments (elbows up, please), one beautiful full moon, a clear night and thousands of stars. Splash in a perfect pool and hot tub as needed, mix it all together and you become the best partner ever for pulling off the best birthday celebration ever! Who knew??!! Painting with Canvas is the bomb! The price is right, and they bring all the needed supplies. All we had to do was extend invites and make sure we had tables and chairs. Francesca and her assistant Lana couldn't have been more enjoyable during the event, and Stephanie - who helps support from afar - made it all seem so very easy, so much help to make this a perfect evening. One thing in particular we enjoyed was Francesca shared a lot of information about the painting we were doing as we moved through the evening - details about the artist, his life, and how it related to the painting. Who Knew??!! You can have fun AND learn at the same time! Don't worry - if you've never put brush to paint to canvas before ... if you can't draw a box (like me) - you CAN do this! They step you through each part to create your masterpiece, and along the way they help you learn technique, understand some of the painting concepts, as well as help you to enjoy painting your own creation! We will do it again, and next time, perhaps, we'll have the easels setup poolside and have everyone in the water! I can't stress enough how fun it was to host this at our home. I am not artsy, I can't even draw perfect stick people, my birds look like m's, my drawing skill is still somewhere in the 1st grade level, but there is this artist inside of me that just keeps trying and have been wanting to do a painting class for years now, just never was brave enough to step out of my comfort zone to show up in public and make a fool of myself. With that said I found a really great offer on Living Social for a 2 hour paint class for 2 for the price of one person with Painting on Canvas so I bought it an then I quickly messaged my partner in crime and see if she was up for it, and thankfully she said yes! Booked a class a month out from when I bought the deal and waited for the day. I was a bundle of nerves, I can't draw, seriously can not draw, but Francesca was super nice and helpful and gave great instructions and technique and slowly my blank white canvas started to have something on it, that looked ok. This was fun, it was stressful because I was fearful of messing up (which I did plenty of) but it was fun and rewarding, and honestly I can't wait to do it again haha. It's my second time I went to painting class first time with painting with canvases. Had the worst experience. No fun no any useful experience with painting. Our instructor Lindsey was totally no help whatsoever. She had no original painting of what we were doing, she barely explained what we were doing. Mostly she was just doing her own painting that we couldn't see. Even when some of us start complaining she just ignored us and continued her painting. Our painting mostly required thin lines But brushes was so overused it was impossible to draw any small lines. Class started 15 min late and finished 20 min early. Total waste of time and money. Class was on December 26 at two brothers ( nice restaurant in old Scottsdale I would recommend the place itself) but won't go to class at least not with this instructor. read more

I am so surprised no has written a review yet. I loved learning to paint in a casual, stress free environment. It's something different to do that is not the normal activities such as a movie. Went on the night that Francesca was at TC's pub and grill. The theme was desert sunsets. She manages to go around the room to give special instructions and give step by step instructions to the entire group. I really enjoyed myself and I got in touch with artsy side. I would definitely recommend this to everyone who likes to paint or wants to learn how. Super fun! read more

I had originally had bought a Groupon with the intent of using it for a specific painting day. I booked the date for a special occasion, and only 3 days prior I received an email that it was canceled. I asked for a refund since their was no other times or dates that I wanted to attend due to their cancellation. Painting with Canvas never responded back to my 2 emails that I sent. Got a groupon and registered for a class. Super excited. Showed up ready to paint and NO ONE was there on location to do the class. I had driven 45 minutes to find out that this is the second week in a row Painting With Canvas was a no show at the location. Called number for company listed and voicemail mailbox was full. We had a great time, Francesca was Great. Our location was at the Moxy, and we did have a few drinks which was nice. Whatever level you are you should relax and have fun with it. I wouldn't go into it thinking you will be the next great painter, although Francesca was super helpful and gave us great tips and pointers. With a little coaching, I was surprised at how well my painting turned out. By no means was it great but I thought for me it was pretty good. The class itself was okay "not great" until the TEACHER spilled red paint all over my pants! She was very apologetic and was quick to add to email her if it didn't come out, so I let it go pretty quickly. I washed the pants several times and tried nearly every household remedy to no avail. I contacted the teacher (who is also the business owner) by email with pictures to notify her that the stains never came out. A week goes by, no response. I then called and left a voicemail, no response. My girlfriend then took the initiative to call her again and this time got ahold of her. But, as soon as she mentioned the damage jeans, the phone went dead. Coincidence? I certainly hope so. When we FINALLY got her on the phone, the only thing she offered was an invitation to her next class. So I can get another pair of pants ruined?!? Thanks for the offer, but how does art classes replace the jeans I just threw out? Pretty disappointing when the business owner says she's going to take care of she herself damaged, and then basically backs out. read more

Super fun time painting with a friend recently! We were at Two Brothers and painted a pink martini ... The instructor (forgot her name!) was friendly and gave good instructions. Only complaint was that she ran out of the hot pink paint 2/3 way through the class, so we had to improvise... They also use paper plates instead of paint palettes, so a lot of the paint gets absorbed and it dries a bit fast. All in all, good time though. And their Groupon deal is pretty worthwhile. My suggestion would be that Painting with Canvas negotiates happy hour pricing for their party during the class. =) read more

My husband and I decided to try something different for our anniversary this year, so we booked a class. We were hesitant at first because neither of us are artistically inclined...but the beauty of this is that you don't have to be! So much fun it's ridiculous. Everything is organized for you and I was surprised at how much I really loved the experience. An artist guides the class and you can follow everything or change it up your way. But paint is plentiful and so are all the supplies. And having a drink and some food while you paint makes it a perfect time. Don't be shy because everyone is looking at their own painting and not yours. It's really such a friendly environment and the group is such a range of ages, I'd even say it would be totally comfortable for someone to go alone because you sit with so many others. But you do have plenty of personal space. Plus you bring home a ready to hang finished canvas. Love! read more

I treated my best friends to a painting session with Francesca. It was great :-) She had a special class where we were painting on wine glasses. We truly enjoyed ourselves. The only reason I'm giving one star is because I cannot give zero, which is exactly what this business deserves. My fiance bought this class for me for our anniversary. We were excited to get out and try something new. We came into town from Prescott and had signed up for a class near where we would be staying so we could avoid an extra thirty minute drive. About an hour prior to the class we get a TEXT from someone saying "hey the location has changed to Chandler instead of Scottsdale"... Strike one and two being that we did not see the text until about twenty minutes prior to the start of the class. The email confirmation stated the Scottsdale address. We called to make sure this wasn't a mistake and it wasn't. Already frustrated we reluctantly drove to Chandler. Upon arrival we asked to talk with the owner to try and understand what went wrong. The owner took zero responsibility and blamed technology for the mix up. Strike three. We asked for a refund which she stated she couldn't do anything for us but we can still take the class....we Sat down and the chairs were so close together we felt claustrophobic and like we couldn't move without bumping a stranger. We immediately stood up and walked out. The demeanor of the owner was that of a teenager with no sense of pride in her business and not a hint of caring for the customer. We promptly filed a complaint with Groupon who graciously apologized and refunded us even though they did not have to. AVOID AT ALL COSTS. read more

If I could give less than one star, I would. I paid $45 online for this class at two brothers brewery in Scottsdale. I sent three pictures of my dog and the artist picked the easiest one to paint. When we got there on time, we were told to have a seat and they would call us. Never got called. Had to walk up and figure out that they were starting ourselves. They were running late. We were told to be on time or we would be forced to reschedule. We didn't even start painting until almost 7PM for a six-thirty start. We, however, were on time like the ad told us to be. We got upstairs and everything was discombobulated. We got our canvases and paper plates with paint on them. I have a white dog. She gave me pink and purple paint, along with black and white and a few other colors. I got no direction. She came to our table twice. My friend sitting next to me in the corner, never even got any direction. I didn't feel like the class was guided at all. I felt like we were being ignored, and that it was a free for all... Why should I pay $45 for a free for all? The colors purple and pink on my paper plate, were supposed to help accent the white of the dog. She gave me the colors, showed me somebody else's example of the blending, and then walked away.. she didn't even bother to tell me how to use the pastels or show me how to blend... She answered not even one question, made comments, and then was off to help somebody else before we could even get it straight what we were supposed to do. I had to also pay $30 for drinks. That would've been fine, if the painting wasn't $45. I don't know how they can charge $45 for these classes. You get a canvas, a few blobs of paint with the colors chosen for you on a cheap, white paper plate, a cup of water, and two old paint brushes..you sit at a table with old, well used, purple plastic sheeting covering the tables that has tons of old, dried paint all over it.. and then, Francesca starts talking...we couldn't hear her or see her over our canvases, and the noise from the game crowd downstairs was way too loud... Francesca was absolutely no help. First, Francesca started the night out by telling us she didn't believe she needed to go to art school in order to paint. Well, maybe she should think about it because going to art school actually helps in situations like this and I find statements like hers a bit offensive. I have friends who went to art school. I'm a nurse.. How would you feel if I said I didn't need to go to nursing school, to be a nurse? I'm sorry, but it cheapened the experience. We got so frustrated with the lack of guidance and help, and with the noise level, That we got up and left. I've been to these painting events before, and there was always step-by-step guidance.. This was a total and complete mess... Would not recommend these folks again. read more

The Social Canvas is such an awesome event, I had so much fun meeting new people and painting. I hadn't held a brush in years, and once I did, it all came back to me. Painting has always been a passion for me, but with work and just life in general I couldn't find the time to get back into it. The Social canvas gave me a chance to get back into it, even if for a couple hours and have fun while meeting new people and of course having a couple of drinks. I owe that all to Francesca for coming up with this amazing event. She was a great instructor and host, she really made everyone feel comfortable in painting from people with little to no experience. I have never been the type to be interested in painting or art. I was referred to the social canvas by a female friend and decided to try it out. I ended up having a fantastic time. It was held at a bar that offered great food and drink specials, the instructor was very friendly and informative. Even to my surprise she was able to help me come away with a great painting. She's easy on the eyes too which definitely made it more enjoyable :-). Overall I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking to learn and test their artistic side and to quickly learn basic steps in painting. It was very fun socially and it was a new non aggressive event that allowed me to meet a lot of people other then the usual 'bar scene' atmosphere. read more
