I was initially very nervous about wedding HMU because I had a large blemish pop up days before my wedding and on top of that, I don't typically wear that much makeup- especially face makeup! I hired Painted Ladies for hair and Makeup for a Santa Cruz wedding in October, 2024. While the artists who actually did my H&MU were professional, punctual, and a pleasure to work with, Sophia the owner of Painted Ladies (I think?) is not. I wish I had spent the time to find the HMUA that I worked with individually instead of booking them through Sophia, because she was by far the most difficult vendor to work with. Communication is key when you're spending money on a service, and it would often take Sophia 4 days or more to respond to my emails (unless she was asking me to Venmo her money for a deposit, but then she wouldn't respond when you ask her to confirm she got it so you're not scammed). She would often only respond when I called and left a voicemail, in which case she wouldn't call back, she would just send an email riddled with spelling and grammar mistakes that were often times nonsensical. I have quite curly hair and wanted to wear it natural for my wedding which I clearly communicated to Sophia. She told me she understood and set me up with a hair trial. She also didn't tell me until the day before my trial that she was not going to be the person actually doing my hair and make up. When I got to the trial, the stylist had no clue that I had curly hair that I didn't want heat treated, because Sophia did not tell her, and wasn't prepared. Sophia tried to make this right by comping a second trial for me a month before my wedding. I was happy with the way the second trial went, and at that point decided to communicate directly with the hair and Make up artists instead of going through Sophia, since that seemed to be where things would get confused. (If you find yourself googling "does Painted Ladies Makeup really exist" the day before your H&MU trial, something has definitely gone wrong). I'm glad I made this decision because 3 days before my wedding Sophia emailed me (instead of my coordinator even though I'd given her their information 3 separate times) to confirm my venue address, and had the wrong address!! Even though it was literally on a signed document in the same email thread!! All in all, my recommendation to brides (especially curly brides) is to put in the work to find good, reliable hair and Make up artists early so you're not dealing with someone who doesn't actually care as long as they get their cut during the stressful part right before your wedding. Do NOT book through Sophia Simoneaux. My hope is that if she sees this, Sophia will give whatever cut she got from my booking and give it to the HMUA's who actually did the legwork for me since all she really did was stress a bride out for the weeks before her wedding. read more

I was initially apprehensive about HMU going into my wedding because I don't wear much makeup during my every day. But Painted Ladies wasn't fazed and Stef and Amber were absolutely great. Stef made herself available and texted with me in between the trial and the big day, trading ideas and suggestions of various lip oils or lip glosses. Painted Ladies came highly recommended from our wedding planner. Being two grooms, we were excited to see that they had "groom services" specifically outlined on their price sheet. We also wanted to provide services to the ladies in our grooms' crew as well as our mothers. They had asked for pictures of everyone in advance alongside photos of desired looks for hair and makeup. This allowed the team to come in ready to go. They also worked with us in advance to find products that could accommodate a few allergies in the group. I ended up spending 3380 with deposit trial and 8 bridesmaids. The reason for my review is mostly due to price. The work was definitely NOT equivocal to the price. Sophias website, prices, and products make you assume she would be good and up to date/current however I don't think she has updated her techniques since she has begun. The hot tools used by her team are NOT professional grade. She refuses to blow dry her clients hair and starts curling air dry hair. I think that if you are naturally pretty and have naturally straight not very frizzy hair, this is your team. Also, backyard weddings or elopements. I had a formal wedding and the makeup and hair skills of this team did not match. My bridesmaids hair got frizzy and the curls fell before their makeup was done! One of my bridesmaids asked for a side braid and it was a tight lump which looked awful. I don't think Sophia has trained in bridal braids or special occasion braids. My bridesmaid had it redone by a friend. My mother in law looked as if she had no makeup done and she didn't even put lashes on her! For a formal wedding! There was NO GLAM at all it looked as if I had hired "my moms friend who's good at makeup and has a flat iron" kind of situation. Don't be fooled by the high end products, a true good makeup artists know that holy grail products are not always Chanel and know how to use tools to create great outcomes despite the money spent on products. With painted ladies this is not the case. You can't hide behind a good website and expensive makeup. I hired 2 teams as I had guests that wanted hair and makeup done (again formal event). The other team was less expensive and WAY better. My fathers wife had her hair and makeup done with them early which upset my mother as it was way more glam and appropriate for a MOB. I thankfully was able to switch to the other makeup and hair artist as the bride which is unfortunate given I had no trial with them and ended up spending twice the money. Im so glad I went with my gut as I would have been even more upset had I stuck with Sophia with frizzy hair, flat curls, and plain makeup. **Disclaimer** - this review is mostly about the business experience and not the work performed by the artist. I booked my services with Painted Ladies 6 months before my wedding date, signed the contract and paid the $200 deposit, to be applied towards my day of services. I scheduled my trial 4 months before the wedding, and although the makeup artist (not Sophia) did a satisfactory job, it was still a little too heavy for my taste and I decided that I want to do my own makeup. I contacted Sophia the next day and asked to change my services to do the bridal hair service only. That was when Sophia mentioned a $500 minimum that needs to be met. The minimum was not mentioned in the contract at all, nor was it mentioned in the initial pricing inquiry or any of our following emails. So I had to keep my original services in order to meet the minimum. Then, around 2 months before my wedding date I had to cancel the wedding due to the Coronavirus outbreak. I was then told the deposit was non-refundable. Again, this was also not stated in the contract or mentioned at any time during the process prior to the cancellation. It would have helped if these restrictions were stated in the contract or communicated upfront when I had inquired about pricing, so that it's clear if I had to make any changes, my only options were to meet the $500 minimum, or cancel and lose the $200 deposit. But these restrictions were not in the contract or communicated prior to booking. Instead, I was told this only after I had booked and was locked in to my services, and when I had to make changes/ cancel. I hate to be the first to leave a negative review, but am extremely disappointed with the lack of transparency and hope that others are aware and can avoid ending up in the same situation. read more

Her make up area in the room was an oasis of calm that I really needed! She is patient, down to earth, friendly, and really is a make up master. My husband saw me for our First Look photos and his jaw dropped (normally he's pretty anti-make up, so I wasn't sure what he would think), but he loved it. I loved it too! I have never worn fake eyelashes (they are terrifying), but she put them on for me and I didn't even notice them! They looked great in photos, too. Sophia and her assistant Carolyn did an outstanding job with all of our hair and makeup on our wedding day! It was just simply beautiful. For the hair and makeup trial, Sophia was extremely accommodating and was able to set it up the day before the wedding allowing me to test it all out at the Rehearsal. Sophia and her assistant were fantastic! They did hair for six ladies and makeup for four in under four hours. Quite an accomplishment! Additionally, they were both very responsive to feedback and individual styles. Sophia worked on three different styles for my hair and two different makeup options until I was happy with the outcome. I looked great in pictures and my bridesmaids and mothers felt beautiful!
