Came here for a friend's birthday! It was very cute. We got our own table in the back, out of the main hustle and bustle of the store. The shop tself is not very big but it attempts to make due with tables fit for families and large groups. I will say that at peak weekend hours, you might want to stay away as there are many many children running around with paint. I brought my bf here so we could paint mugs. I wish we came here earlier b/c we came an hour before closing and I felt very rushed! They let you come back over and over again until you're done painting your piece, but charge you $6 if you wait more than a week between painting sessions, FYI. In any case, if you go once a week till you're done, it's fine! PROS: 1. Friendly, knowledgeable staff. It's been awhile since I've gone to a ceramic store to paint a piece, so it was helpful to have them explain the process, how to pick paints, how to use the foams, sponges, stencils, etc. 2. Lots of pieces to pick from! Mugs, plates, vases, gnomes, teapots, dolls, Disney characters, etc.! Whatever your heart fancies. 3. Lots of paints! Every color of the rainbow. CONS: 1. Maybe just a little spendy? $20 for a mug. Then again, I'm making it my own and painting it how I want, plus they fire it for you, so maybe it's not so bad. I've been here numerous times with my daughter over the years, and our plan to visit Paint the Town was the highlight of our valentines plan this year... unfortunately, we were seated at 7:45p and this must represent some kind of carriage-to-a-pumpkin for some of the staff - we were told we had 45 minutes and would have to stop painting at 8:30p and be in line by 8:45p. A little severe and not what I'd experienced in my past experience there, but hey, it's Friday and I'm sure the staff wanted to get home at a reasonable hour, all good. But then to be reminded every 10 minutes that we need to leave soon, are you done painting yet, you need to move tables because time is a-wasting... they should have just scream, "WHY ARE YOU HERE?? WE WANT TO GO HOME!!!" My kid was in tears trying to finish and making mistakes in the midst of being rushed and felt like her project was wrecked. Thanks, folks, for a crap experience. read more

Of course its less expensive to buy the pieces already painted and glazed! But that is SO not the point. You can feel like a real artist and let your creativity flow. Besides, if it doesn't turn out like you imagined, simply gift it to your mom. She'll love it. That's what mom's are for. I like any place that lets me be creative but won't make me do much to clean up the mess. My house is messy enough, which is why I tried this. It's more about the atmosphere and getting into the fun, picking out pieces and paints and not worrying that you're really not much of a painter - ok that's me. I stopped in today and couldn't resist painting something. Their assortment of ceramics is not bad at all, and I love their variety of paints and glazes. Extremely helpful and friendly staff, who all seem to be amazingly skilled at art. The studio rate strikes me as highly reasonable, and I find the atmosphere really relaxing and joyful. I needed a team building activity and one of my employees suggested this place. So I agree and we go with 5 other staff. What can I say-amazing experience. We went on a Saturday morning awaiting a place filled with rambunctious kiddies, BUT surprisingly we had the place to ourselves. So much so that we got to choose the music! Anyway the experience was interesting in that the directions weren't thorough-I did remember to wipe down my pottery piece and make sure I have 3 coats of paint besides that-didn't know what the heck I was doing. I guess that's part of the experience because if kids can do-sure as hell I can too! Thanks paint the town for a great experience. I want to return soon to do more painting because my first ceramic pottery isn't what I really expected. Be sure to bring money because the pottery isn't as cheap as you would expect. read more

We had a private party here and I have walked by this place so many times and it has always been on my list to do. I'm glad I got a chance to go here with a group of my friends. There's a large private area in the back where they keep crafts to dry. Ben helped us out by explaining the process of how it worked since most of us were first timers. It was a fun experience but most of us were rather slow with our projects and had to quicken the pace to finish up by the end of our time. We started at 6:30p and the store closes at 9. They said we could always come back but most of us wanted to finish. Staff was great. There is a variety of colors and projects to choose from ranging from little caricatures like Hello Kitty and different animals to vases, plates, and mugs. It was pretty hard to decide what I wanted to do because there was just sooo many to choose from! I loved painting pottery when I was a kid so I took my boyfriend's little sister here since she has never done it. I picked out a mickey mouse chip and dip bowl and she picked out a sign for her room. She was so excited to do it that she ran over to the paints to start picking out her colors before they even had a chance to explain everything to us. What I like about this place is that they don't charge studio fees like some other places do and they have discounts for every day of the week. We ended up getting a 20% discount so it was a pretty decent deal. Check their website to see what deals they have on the day you go. My boyfriend's sister kept wanting to "help" with my piece, so the paint got messed up on my bowl, but that's okay that's what happens when you're around kids. :) Everything still turned out pretty well. We thought this was really fun and she kept saying she wanted to come back here again. The only thing I didn't like was that it still ended up to be a little pricey even after the discount, but it still seems to be better than other places. Saw this place a couple weeks ago and decided to come back. There's so many things to paint and it took me forever to figure out what to paint. I decided to paint a whale jar. It was so cute and only $25. Probably spent a couple hours painting. The worker was great at explaining things to us. It was very helpful. I hope to go again sometime! There was an incident that happened and the staff was very professional about it. The staff went above and beyond accommodating us. The 5-star is for them. Price and everything was decent. It may seem like a strange choice, but I love bringing my girlfriend here, and the first time I went here was on a date. It was a minor stroke of genius. Even better, my girlfriend's co-workers teased me about going and doing something totally "girly" like that, and yet when she told their girlfriends... they all enjoyed it too. I have a great time every time I'm there. I thought the paint-your-own ceramic plate/frog/piggy bank/pet bowl/cookie jar fad had reached peak popularity ten years ago. (Mostly because I thought I was ten years too old to be painting pottery on a Saturday night.) Not only was this place popping and constantly busy, but I enjoyed myself way more than I anticipated. The setup: is simple! Choose what you want to paint, pick out some cool colors, grab a couple brushes, and go at it. There are stencils, stamps, and other art-projecty doodads if you're feeling cray. Painting: You don't realize how reliant you've become on the "undo" button until you try clay painting. There are no undos, redos, or do-overs (unless you intentionally knock your piece off the table like I was tempted to do a couple times--oopsie!). But, alas, you're stuck when you put brush to cold, emotionless clay, so maybe go in with a plan? Or sort out your commitment issues beforehand. At least realize that this activity might be a reflection of your attitudes about dating. Hmm. But it's actually a lot of fun and kind of therapeutic. Time will fly by before you realize how little you've accomplished, at which point you start to rush and slap on that third coat of paint. No matter how many times I've tried, I've never gotten into those adult coloring books, but I can see myself coming back again and again to paint ceramic things I'll probably put into storage immediately upon bringing them home. Dat kiln lyfe tho: When you finally finish, expect to leave your baby for at least a week's time. In that way, it's kind of like giving birth--you think you've done all the hard work and want to take it home, but, alas, it ain't yours just yet. I think a week is long enough to forget it exists, honestly, because it was almost a month before I went back. When I finally made it, my sweet baby cat dish was so shiny and cute! I was such a proud father. I felt artistic and gifted until I realized Chinese sweat shops can crank out, like, a thousand of them a second and they'd still look better than mine. Meh. In the end, I'll be back to Paint the Town. There was a cute as heck tiny dinosaur figurine that kept calling out to me. Don't know what I'd do with it, but I can always live the hoarder life. read more

I used to think that this place was just for kids but I was so wrong. This is an amazing place for a date amongst adults or for a relaxing afternoon. First off, the service is warm and inviting. The staff seems very knowledgeable about the craft and they are approachable to newcomers and veterans alike. The pricing is really good in my opinion. Painting a plate or cup can cost $15-20 and includes all the paint and everything you need. Overall you can spend $15 on a piece and spend 3-4 hours there; a great value and a use of the money. There are so many different options to choose from (plates, cups, vases, miniature statues, mugs, etc.) and probably 50+ different paint colors. In the end you also get the joy and satisfaction of getting to keep something cool that you made yourself. I highly recommend this place. read more

Fun but the assembled crew of employees are not very helful or friendly. They mostly hang out at the cash register and eat. Several of us were struggling with some process and the crew just ignored us. Do your homework about how the process works because you will only get short phrases or furrowed brows if you ask. It is fun especially if you go with a friend. The two 5 year olds I saw were bored and confused. The prices are reseaonable. You could get a cute product if you go in knowing exactly how to do it. read more

We held my daughters birthday party here and had a more than wonderful experience. Since we had such a big party we had our own large table in the back. The staff was more than helpful and very pleasant to deal with especially on a super busy Saturday afternoon. They have a great selection of items to paint - small figures for children, bowls, plates mugs and other staples you would expect to find at paint your own stores. A bonus is that you are only charged for what you paint. A lot of stores now charge sitting fees or "supply fees" on top of the price of the item you are painting. Not here. This location is almost a 2 hr drive or a 1 hr ferry away from home- but whenever my kids are in the mood to paint we head right over to this spot. I have to confess it's probably been almost 10 years since I've been here. Part of my surprise baby shower was coming here with my ladies to paint tiles for my baby's new mirror. The girls booked the room in the back and we were able to sit all together on a Saturday afternoon to work on our creative sides. I LOVED IT! I cannot recall the name of the guy helping us but he was fantastic. He answered our questions, helped us dry the tiles with a blower so we could move onto the next steps, and when I forgot my instructions, he came back and repeated them for me! He was patient and kind throughout the 2 hours we were there. I cannot wait to see the finished product! Great idea for a party. I've been to Paint the Town a bajillion times. That's right, one bajillion. I've been doing ceramics since I was a kid. My mom taught me when I was seven, and we always had a kiln at home. But then I moved out and went to grad school, and I've missed ceramics ever since. When I moved to Seattle I found this place, and finally, here was a way to do ceramics without having a kiln of my own, and without lugging pieces back and forth to ceramics studios for firing. If you count the electricity cost of firing a kiln, all the paint and glaze, the studio time you pay for here is actually not that bad. Plus slapping on clear glaze and firing a kiln sucks anyway. At this place I do just the fun part without having to invest in all the materials, do the boring parts, or even clean up! Also, U Village rent is not cheap. They've got to make some money some how! So everybody stop griping about the cost and go paint something! It is not just about getting a cheap object or gift; it's all about the pride of creating something. So anyway actually spent a lot of time here while waiting for my job to start. Got to know the staff, which are all pretty helpful and cool. They are mostly university-age hipsters with decent taste in music (I stopped bringing my Ipod). My job is stressful, and when I come in here to let loose for a couple of hours, I find my "Zen Zone." I can't go there as often since said job began a year ago, but I go whenever I can. My house is becoming full of random ceramic objects (all functional art), and I get compliments on them all the time. Even my husband, who's not particularly artistic or creative, came with me a couple of times and had a lot of fun. You don't need 20 years' experience and an artistic background. But it is helpful as someone else mentioned to plan ahead, particularly if you want something that comes out really nice, or a great gift. Just once, out of the bajillion times I've gone there, did they mess up something I made. I pointed it out and was frank about my disappointment. They were profusely apologetic and more than made up for it by letting me paint another one, and even offered to refund my money. Next time you're at U Village, give it a try. read more

My 3 young adult children and I had time well spent there. The selection of pottery and paint color was decent. My only complaint was the staff, they were socially awkward, they were completely unhelpful and not friendly at all. I would give them a low 3 out of 10 for customer service. It's not just one or two employees that are not good it's the whole crew (minus the 2 gals with long dark hair they would get a 5 out of 10). How do you happen to hire person after person who resemble the same ability to give bad service as the employees before them...... This is great "different" activity (at least more unusual for me)! I am glad they stopped charging the studio fee so you don't have to rush through your painting. The have a nice selection of items, examples and paints as well. There's a private room in the back which I've been to. A few times I've been a little unclear on my options like how my coaster at home doesn't have a rubber bottom. I didn't know about that option until afterwards! I think this is a great date idea but only if you plan to have a second date to pick it up! Its different than a movie or dinner and gives you a chance to talk though! I am no artist or even all that artistic, but I went to this place with an open mind and left happy with what I did and what they had to offer. First off this place always has good deals and already low prices. You can choose a wide range of pre-made pottery pieces to paint and have glazed. The provide all of the tools and paints you could want and let you just go with the flow and create whatever it is you want. If you have never painted pottery or you need an activity for a kid to do or even a very young child then I would suggest taking them here and trying it out for yourself. It is within University Village so there is parking, but if you have ever been to U village then you know you need to drive around for a minute to find a spot. read more

My five year old and I typically love this place and have been frequenting it for a few years. That being said, I was less than impressed with the staff last time we visited. They all hung out at a table near the door and gossiped about their love lives. I'm not even sure if they were all employees. One of the girls was extremely shallow and loud, using mild profanity at one point in the conversation. As my daughter did not seem to be paying attention at that particular moment I chose not to say anything. I did leave thinking that it was a shame the owners had hired these immature girls to represent them and that if it were my shop, I would be embarrassed at the level of customer service. read more

This is basically the only ceramic painting studio in my area, and I have been here a few times with my boyfriend. We come here when we want something to do during the afternoon to chill out and not think about much besides what colors to paint a cereal bowl. Overall the studio is decent, similar to other studios I have been to in other areas, although the selection of pieces to paint is limited and there isn't a lot of space, meaning you sometimes end up sharing a table. The one thing that deters me from returning is the gossipy high school girls that are employed there. They are all very loud and talk nonstop about stupid high school drama. I would expect that they would have a little bit of discretion about the things they talk about, it kind of reminds me of being in the girls bathroom when I was in school. Also, this is a place that kids flock to, so if you are trying to avoid a store full of screaming little kids, go during school hours, and definitely not on a Saturday/Sunday afternoon. The most important advice I can give you is to bring your iPod, no matter who is there, you will wish you had it. read more

Went here last week with the old lady to paint some mugs and little hippos and monkeys. It takes a couple mins to figure out how everything worked, it was busy so we didnt get any help from the staff. So we just did what we had to do to get started. We stayed a couple hours to paint our stuff and it takes a week for them to glaze and fire em up. We picked them up yesterday and they turned out great. My mug is huge and it holds about 2 cups of green tea, I love it. Make sure you initial your name and put the date somewhere on the cup so you can stamp that day in history and remember the good memories. The cost was a little pricey, $20 per mug and $8 per little animal figure but worth it for the experience. read more

After the Picasso show yesterday at SAM this team was inspired to do our own art. Off we journeyed to Paint the Town. We found a very responsive staff who instructed this reviewer and his two grandsons on colors, paints, and the use of brushes and detail tools for our dinnerware. After 3 hours and 4 pieces of tableware we finished up. I ended up designing a spoon rest with the hope that it becomes a family heirloom brought out every Thanksgiving. read more
