That was a pretty smooth espresso martini for $14 (Photo 10). Actually the official name of the…read morecocktail is Do You Make Espresso Martinis? because people wouldn't expect a whiskey distillery to offer one. However, Wigle does because they produce a wide array of spirits beyond whiskey like the vodka and coffee liqueur in this mix. I depended on YouTube travel vloggers to point me in the direction of this popular distillery bar and cafe in the Strip District. The place was bustling in the middle of the afternoon, and I was lucky to secure the last stool at the bar. The espresso martini drew my eye, and I thought I should have a snack to go with it. I ordered the $12 Devil's Eggvocate. Four deviled egg halves were topped with smoked paprika, pickled jalapeño slices, and bacon jam made with their own coffee liqueur (Photo 9). It was a bit top heavy for me, but then I never reject a deviled egg. If I wasn't driving, I might've considered trying a whiskey tasting, but it just wasn't in the cards. COCKTAIL / FOOD - 4 stars...smooth martini, over-the-top deviled eggs AMBIANCE - 4 stars...crowded but the bar was fine SERVICE - 3.5 stars...seemed understaffed TOTAL - 4 stars...worth having a taste and not just whiskey RELATED - Exploring Pittsburgh? Palate Partners has become one of my favorite places in Pittsburgh. Located in the Strip District…read moreright across the street from Penn Mac, Palate Partners has a wide range of wine and wine merchandise for sale. Note, due to the archaic PA liquor control laws, you can't buy wine and take it with you the day you buy it. Instead, you have to wait two days to pick it up. However, they have wines that are not available at the PCLB stores and the wine merchandise makes for great and reasonably priced gifts. Most importantly, Palate Partners holds wine tastings every 1st and 3rd Friday of the month. For $12, tasters get to sample three whites and three reds selected by the store owner. These wine tastings are a great way to try new wines as well as a way to decompress and socialize on a Friday after work.

This is a great find for wine enthusiasts. Located in the Strip district this place is a great…read moreexcuse to stay after work or to head downtown for an early evening event. The store itself is filled with wine related items available for purchase. I highly recommend the holiday themed wine glass koosies they make for a great conversation starter at a party. The only downfall and it is not their fault but PA laws will not allow them to sell you wine to leave with that day. You have to come back in a few days. Palate Partners also host wine tasting events a couple of times a month and I highly recommend them. The host wine tasting classes the first and third Fridays of every month. They usually pick wines that people would not normally choose themselves when at the W&S store. They sample three reds and three whites. It is relatively inexpensive but a great introduction to wine tasting. If you are looking for a gift for a friend/family member who enjoys wine this is a great stop.

Went to Local Bar and Kitchen, South Side, Pittsburgh…read more I don't think someone could have a bad time at Paint Nite - Apparently, this is new to Pittsburgh which is surprising because everything went really smoothly. Not a single complaint. Instead of boasting about how much fun it was, I'm just going to answer a few questions that I had going into it/some insight. -BYOB / SNACKS are by venue only. I went to Local which is a bar/restaurant and so we paid ourselves. -Side Note, Local's food is really good, a lot of beer variety, and it was Wednesday Wine Night (buy a bottle, get a bottle)- -There is not a lot of room to eat because the easels are set up close to each other so I would recommend eating before/after -We got drinks before we started and they had a server going around during so that you didn't have to make people move for you (we also took a break during to get more drinks/walk around to see others work and meet new people) -GROUPON had an amazing deals. It was basically half off. -Just bring yourself (paint/brushes/water/paper towel/smock/easel are set up before you arrive) -I recommend getting there 10 min. early to get settled. There was no designated seats for this one and due to the Polar Vortex, no one obviously wanted to sit away from the heater or near the windows. (especially if you're in a bigger group) -You are painting without an outline - completely free hand. The instructor is there to give inspiration/answer questions/paint with you/have fun. -You can paint whatever you want - the "theme" is just kind of a guide/something to make it more of an event. -Went from 7-9. There was no rush to leave. We left our paintings and had a drink after at the bar to let our paint dry. -It's just fun. No pressure/judgment. -Some people were solo/some in groups/some just pairs. All accepted. We went on 1/29 at Local. S/O the "That Paint Lady" ... she was great. Super funny, encouraged drinking and really owned the room.

Everything was well organized, down to the apron, the paints, and all is setup for you in advance. 2. The host has a PA system, so everyone can hear well. 3. The host was very positive, encouraging everyone to be creative and have fun. 4. The painting was broken down into methodical steps so everyone succeeded. 5. It's a great way to meet new people and to socialize with your friends. 6. It's FUN! There are different instructors and venues. I went to Getaway Cafe and the staff there was very welcoming and the food was good. Our instructor had a degree in Art, and she took the time to explain how to complete the painting in easy steps. Nobody at Paint Nite paid full price, they all got their tickets through Groupon. Not sure how long Groupon will sell the half price tickets, but if you use the code PITTSBURGH you can bypass the Groupon website.
