The staff gave us some brief instructions and then cut us loose. Some of the people in our group had done this before and were off and running. I did not have the same experience. I landed exactly 1 ax on the board in my first 50 throws spanning an hour... It would have been nice if the staff dropped by to offer some tips rather than watching videos on their laptop and ignoring us. If this was solely a review on Aaron, our instructor, it would be a five. But the kid behind the bar/register was on his phone the whole time and was really hard to get his attention. He also asked for my ID in the beginning and didn't hand it back to me, just left it on the bar top out of my reach. I asked if he still needed it and he said no. My friends and I had a blast at Lumberjaxes! It was my first time going axe throwing, and our coach Jacob was super nice & extremely helpful in teaching us how to do it. A group of 6-7 is the perfect size, because the two hour window fits a round robin, tournament, & freestyle throwing for that many people nearly exactly (we finished one minute before our time was up). The establishment has an agreement set up with Frank's pizza to deliver food, and they come pretty quickly right to your axe throwing lane. TL;DR: this place is awesome, especially for beginners. Don't be a jerk and don't get sloppy drunk, obviously! You're playing with axes! I've been here three times so far in the past two and a half years, and it's only been 3 because I don't live that close. But I continuously return to this place because for me, it's a tried and true classic. This review only pertains to the Millvale location, but I'm interested in the Cranberrg one as well. Having thrown axes once before at another axe throwing place in 2019, I met up with a friend in August of 2020 at this one. Don't remember much besides it being really fun, almost all the employees wore masks, and everyone kept socially distant. It still didn't keep the axe coach from teaching us some tips and tricks! Yet that wasn't as fun as the second time, when I came last fall with friends. Had a super dope coach whose name escapes me, and he helped us a ton with form, angle, and techniques. I feel bad that I didn't tip him, I made sure to do that the next time. Which was this past weekend. For my 30th, I booked a 6- to 12- person reservation for two hours, but come that time, five of the eight that were confirmed to come out dropped out within a couple hours of the actual event. I was pretty damn upset, to say the least. Nevertheless, Button was our coach, and she made sure to make our time fun, and get this. She bought one of the axes they sell, and gave it to me as a present for my birthday. I damn near cried. It was so nice of her to do! We did a team building event here on a Friday afternoon that was a total blast. They help you figure out how to throw the axes (one-handed or two-handed) and give you a few different lengths and weights of axes to choose from which is great. A few folks in our group were very good at it (our boss even hit the small green dot which awards 7 points which blew our minds) and then the rest of us were hit or miss, literally. I honestly wasn't sure what to expect going here. But my friend was in town and wanted to go, so I played along. It was a blast! Our instructor Neil went over the safety procedures and throwing techniques since I've never done it before, and we went to work. There are cages that separate the throwing lanes and a few protocols in place to ensure no one has an ax coming at them. It took a bit of practice before an ax hit the board, but by the end it got much easier, and even got a few bullseye's along the way. There's a bar on the premises and a few places that deliver food nearby. The only drawback is the parking situation, but we found street parking a few blocks away without an issue. It was super interesting as I have never done it before. You pushed the weights down the ice and the coaches sent them back to you. We decided to try cosmic ax throwing for our xmas family party. had been here before and had great time but was regular ax throwing. Disappointing. I've been here twice, once with a large group and once on a date -- they were very accommodating of both! With a small party, you're likely to be able to walk-in but just call to make sure first. The coaches are nice and friendly and will walk you through how to throw, safety instructions, and a few different games to play. In large groups, they draw up a tourney style brakcet that is very fun. They also have a full bar (uhhh enjoy axes + drinks responsibly), and you can order delivery from a menu they have onsite which arrives pretty quickly (unfortunately, the food is nothing to Yelp about) There is parking around the back and street parking as well, pretty convenient! read more

Lots of fun! We had a great coach in Hannah, she taught us some quick safety rules, then some excellent coaching and fine tuning after that. It's both easier and harder than it looks. I could hit the bull's-eye several times, but it's hard to learn to throw with consistentcy. It's great group building activity, so I would suggest that you go with a group. We had a group of 11. They were able to accommodate our large group. Our instructor, Jake was really great. He helped a lot with teaching technique even though some of us had been here before. He has been the best instructor yet. He was very patient and a lot of fun. My only gripes are I wish the jukebox was louder. Yes, I know you need to be able to hear the instructor, but you could barely hear the songs you pay for. The other gripe is the drinks are a little weak. What a fun and special experience! Came here with coworkers for a team outing event. Upon entry, everyone needs to fill out waiver forms on their tablets at the front desk. After that, we got our assigned axe throwing stall. Our instructor was great walking through the safely guidelines & demonstrating how to properly throw the axes. She also corrected our posture and positioning if needed so that chances of making a hit are upped :) SO SATISFYING to finally see your own axe hit and sink into the plywood bulls-eye board. So much fun!!! It's BYOB (no hard liquor) and you can bring food in too to set up at these long picnic type benches set up in your assigned area. I'm sure we had the fanciest spread with a basket full of crackers and Brie and other cheeses and meats. They also have vending machines if you forgot to bring snacks. We had beer and wine too. They give you a lesson and there's a round robin competition so the person assigned to you to give you throwing tips and keep score can set up the bracket for the championship round. Our guy was Patrick and he was super awesome and fun and didn't make you feel bad for being an awful axe thrower. We had no idea what we were coming in to but we had the best time ever. It's a big open space so you could see the other groups too - everyone was having a blast. I did not come out the victor but everyone had loads of fun and wants to come back. I came here for a work outing earlier this summer, ready to try axe throwing for the first time after hearing loads of wonderful things about it. Well, once was enough for me. Not that this is the staff's fault! I want to be clear that the staff were very welcoming, and did their best to support everyone and explain the art of axe throwing to my group. Unfortunately, axe throwing ended up just not being for me. Here's how the visit was structured: our office arrived and was given a quick overview on safety and technique. Then we got to practice axe throwing. I actually felt great during this stage; I started out badly, but I managed to land a bulls-eye before my practice ended. Cool - there's hope for me yet! Then came the competition part of the night, and oh good lord. During a round, you would throw the axe fifteen times. In a row. That's a LOT of throws for a newbie, and since I was failing to hit the board 9 times out of 10 - with my competitive group watching all the while - I got very tired and very frustrated VERY quickly. As a bonus, the staff member supervising us told me after every throw that I was doing one particular thing wrong. I get it; she wants to help, it's her job to provide feedback on technique. Buuuuuuut honestly, after hearing eleven times in a row that I was making the same mistake, I just wanted her to be quiet because it was like, "Yup, got it, I'm bad at this, thanks!" The lengthy competition structure is ultimately what ruined the outing for me. While I enjoyed casually getting to practice and trying something new at the start of it all, the happiest moment of the night was truly when I was out of the competition. Because I knew I didn't have to pick up an axe ever again. I will say that if there's a more casual option for visitors than "come and compete and throw the axe 15 times per round", I could be persuaded to return here sometime. Came here this afternoon during walk in hours and had a blast. I was actually pretty terrible but our instructor was great. Definitely call ahead of time if you are going on the weekend to verify walk in hours. They will let you know what times are not sold out. We played for one hour and it was plenty of time. We had such a great time! This place had been on my radar, so when my softball team got some people together to go, I was in!
