At larger vendors, asking a question often leads to blank stares from employees who clearly don't know much about the fish they're selling. At Pagano's, the team knows their product inside and out. I frequently ask their opinions when I'm unsure about a dish--whether Lemon Sole or Dover Sole is better suited, or how they'd recommend preparing shrimp. I always get thoughtful, honest answers. They never try to upsell me; instead, they offer advice based on experience. That's rare. You can tell they genuinely care about what they do. They'll even share personal cooking tips: "I like to prepare it this way..." It's inspired many of my own meals. Bought Christmas eve dinner here. 7 fishes. I arrived on 12/24 at 740am. I was the second person there. Immediately the staff outside greeted me. They were fulfilling pre-orders. I did not pre-order and planned to browse for my families dinner. They officially opened at 8 but I was allowed into the store a few minutes early. First thing you will notice is it doesnt have the typical "fish" smell a market or monger has. Every last item from fish to crab and oysters looked like it was plucked from the ocean. I bought some white cod, 2 lbs shrimp, 2 lbs stone crabs, 2 lbs clams, 2 lbs muscles, the other fishes for the dinner were already accounted for ie: sardines for pasta con la sarde. By the time i was ready to check out there were what seemed to be 40 cars in the parking lot and a line out the door, down the ramp. This showed me I made the right decision coming here. My total time in the store making selections, paying and getting back in the car was 12 minutes. Not bad, and i dont think this was just because i was first, the two men behind me were also checking out so the turn around time was the same for everyone, probably because they knew what they wanted, made decisively driven decisions and the staff behind the counter in on-the-ball, super polite, helpful and professional. I just moved to the area and this will be my choice for seafood. I tried going to Stew Leonard's and found some deals there on certain things, but as a whole, the meat was expensive and not that great looking. This place however, has amazing looking fish. It's not cheap, but great looking fish isn't cheap. I'd say they are right in line with what they should be charging. The salmon was beautiful. The scallops were perfect. So many other things I can't wait to try as well. Customer service was spot on as well. I know my stuff, but I wanted to see if the fish monger was going to try and upsell me. He did not, he gave an honest opinion that I 100% agreed with. I may check out some other option and compare, but this will certainly be my go to for seafood. read more

You get what you pay for here and it is amazing! I schlepped all the way from my building in SoNo to this place (set back from the street and close to the water - definitely looked legit as I am used to the old fish markets in Chicago that all the restaurants use). Got some beautiful halibut that the fishmonger took the skin off for me (i miso marinated it overnight and baked it, then hubs took a torch to it) - our guests and we devoured every delicious morsel which melted in our mouths. I also grabbed a few other items to try - my husband loved his stuffed clam (i can't say the same but "gasp" I am not a fan of Old Bay), the cocktail shrimps were exactly as they should be and the sauce was nice and potent (no extra horseradish needed)! They were making crab cakes when I was there so i grabbed some of that to cook up at home myself and the flavors were just perfect - I couldn't have made them better myself - should have grabbed the mustard sauce or a remoulade to go with it but alas I didn't - next time! Many of you know about Pagano's in Norwalk. They sell their fresh daily catch wholesale and retail. But many folks are surprised to hear that Pagano's also has an extensive menu offering varieties of Fish 'n Chips to-go. You can get fried oysters, fish, shrimp...you name it. They typically use beer batter but they can fry up the yummies in corn meal for an extra crunch, if you prefer. Mr. William at Pagano's is extremely helpful and friendly gentleman. He will fry up some of his fresh catch of the day, pack it up to-go with tartar sauce and cold-slaw. He will make sure your bag has utensils, ketchup, salt, pepper, vinegar. Everything you need to customize your fish 'n chips fantasy. I usually can't wait to drive all the way home before I dig into my bag...so I open up the bag right there in my car. I'm very upset with these people and their attitude. I called this morning and clearly asked for RETAIL pricing on lobsters. I was told that Maine partial shell lobsters were $8.95/lb and Canadian hard shell ones were $12.95/lb. I drove over twenty miles to buy some. When I got there I was told they had no lobsters at the price. When I told them I was quoted the above prices. They told me I must have called the wrong place. Ridiculous! Then they told me I must have asked for wholesale prices. I was extremely clear i was inquiring about retail! Then they told me they were out of the lobsters I ask for. I called a few days ahead and was quoted $30 for a gallon of fresh chopped sea clams - went to pick them up later that week - the fishmonger in the shop wouldn't let me go without paying $50 for that same gallon... I wasn't a "commercial client". No mercy. No compromise. I've been buying these clams from this supplier, on and off, for over 5 years - always wholesale... Excellent seafood. The best you likely will find in CT. Extensive selection, and only the best. Incredible sea scallops when available. Although I usually cook my own shrimp (as most that you buy are over cooked and therefore like rubber,) recently I realized I was running short on time before a gathering.
