They have several beers on tap and also have a stocked bar if you are not a beer fan. Eh I'm not in a hurry to get back here anytime soon. I can understand that it may be a popular place for people who live in town but for me they didn't win me over. The waitresses, would stop by to ask how we were but never waited for our response. We had to flag either one of them down multiple times to ask for things we needed. They had four of their own beers on tap, which were fine as well as about 20 other craft beers. There was something for everyone on the beer menu so they do a great job at keeping it well balanced. We all ordered the tacos, some of us ordered salmon and some of us ordered shredded beef. From the consensus the salmon won the taco challenge. They were pretty tasty but the shells were dry. They add an interesting seasoning to the corn chips that make them taste more like a cool ranch Doritos. I really did enjoy their uniqueness with these chips, I just wish they dispersed the seasoning evenly and not just dump it on a couple of chips on top. The atmosphere is rugged with a theme of paddle boarding. You can see on the wall who past champions are about some challenge. The front bar in the window allows you to sign your name on it, or if they didn't allow you to initially it sure looks like it now. It is also a seat yourself which is fine, but it didn't seem like the tables got a change to be scrubbed down before we sat down, which isn't a huge bother but the waitress never even tried after we sat down to clean it up. Diverse beer and cider offerings and a menu that goes beyond typical bar food. We stopped in for lunch on our way through on I 75, and we were very glad we did. The beer and cider offerings were from breweries near and far, and they had many different types of beer, everything from lagers to sours to Belgians to stouts. These were good beers they had. The food was mostly pizza, flatbread and paninis, but they weren't average and they were anything but boring. We had four different ones and they were all fresh and tasty. They even have gluten free options of all three types, which was great. There is outdoor seating in nice weather and growlers available. We love looking for local breweries and we happened upon this location while passing through on a trip to Michigan. Although we opted to sit outdoors because of COVID, using the restrooms inside revealed an inventive and creative seating inside with old movie theatre seats and accompanying tables and decorations. Normally I would review the beers for a brewery but the food actually stole the show. We are from California and have yet to find decent Mexican food in the Midwest and while I would not call it authentic - the chicken tacos with the mango salsa were to die for. There are also a selection of healthy salads which helped break up our road trip gas station snacks. Worth a good stop if you are passing through to enjoy a good beer and dinner. read more

I could live in this brewery. The old building, ie. brick & mortar, ancient barn wood stained and glazed red with the nails still pounded down against it, reminds me of my childhood farmhouse. Growlers on pegs, wired via chicken fencing is fanciful. The pizza oven is guarded by a half wall and old windows. While another area resembles two horse stalls in 6" x 6" beams and more chicken wire fence. Looks like the original wooden floor was merely cleaned and polished. Minimal decor with industrial lighting, open beam ceiling and ventilation. Bartender was busy, but pleasantly gave me samples of my red ales to decide. The Mt Pleasant "Mountain Town" Cow Catcher caught my fancy and I had a pint of the smooth red. read more

I stopped by 10 times before opening. I met the owner Dave Vargo he was doing my all the work himself. I've been coming to grayling since I was a kid the better part of 35 years. In that time I've seen very little growth in grayling. I love the grayling area. This town needed development like paddle hard and I'm super excited with what we have received. It's hard to express in words how this place makes me feel. Now I'm a mug club member #69, I've been here 20 times and I feel like I'm part of the family. I'm probably leaving out important details. Its a popular place in Grayling, on the weekends, and so I image they have a tough time staffing, but they do and its impacting the rating. It is a microbrew, with 5-6 of their our beers and another 14-15 of other draft beers - mostly local Michigan beers. All the beers are posted on a couple of large TV screens about he bar - which is tough to read from parts of the place. And they do do flights - but you need to ask. The menu is limited to tacos and paninis - basically finger food - with 4-5 different apps and maybe a salad. The biggest issue we had was the length of time being served, getting our drinks and the food - each was done in 20 minutes increments - so the food took 40+minutes, once order. So I would try this place at a less crowd time, rather on a Sunday early afternoon in the summer, with all the traffic heading down state. read more

We were looking for a non-fast food stop on the way back from up north and this hit the spot. We had the California and Spinach Feta paninis. Both were tasty, filling, and a great value. The olive oil used elevated them both a step. The menu is filled with creative pizzas and paninis. We were very happy to see all the vegetarian options. In order to see the tap list, you have to go online which is a bit annoying. We were a bit surprised that there were none of their own brews on tap when we visited.It was a bit confusing. But the selection of Michigan craft beers was excellent. Our waiter was a friendly guy with great recommendations but did slip up and forget to give us napkins. We were able to comfortably sit outside out front which was great for a road trip. If driving through the area, choose this place over Subway every time. read more

We started our day at the cottage in Houghton Lake. Kind of a rainy day so no boating on tap. Wife and step-daughter went to throw some pottery on a wheel-thing in West Branch. Wife referred to Patrick Swayze quite a bit. So my niece didn't want to go throw on the wheel-thing so we figured we'd go hit a few brewrees. It was fairly tough to figure out where to start because there are three in Grayling. So we narrowed it down when we saw that Rolling Oak doesn't open until 2. Niece just got a new car so she drove since the wife took our only car to the pottery place. Hopefully that's enough context for this review. (If anyone wants more, please respond and I'll fill in more context.) So we didn't know it, but there is some kind of big to-do in Grayling today. Streets blocked off, old cars with hoods up and stuff like that. Band playing under a tent. People mixing and mingling. I had a Paddler's Pilsner and the niece had a Cherry Crush cider. The Pilsner is a fine example of the species, with a light body and clean finish. I dare say it was refreshing. With regard to the Cherry Crush cider, the niece says, "It was great! It was like fresh; great cherry flavor, full body." She wondered whether you could say "full body" about cider or is that just wine, and I reassured her it was a fine critique. My beef tacos were quite tasty and just the right portion. About her meatball sub she says, "It was good. Just good." It is raining out now so we have to decide whether we're going to run to the next brewree or stay here and watch The Open, but the stupid DirectTV just went out. read more

Only got two stars Because the food was good. Service? Terrible. We had to get our own menus after ten minutes of sitting. Our waitress came one time and every other time we flagged down someone else who worked there, including who I think was the owner, for plates and silverware once our food came. We had to get our own boxes when finished and bring our checks to the host stand to cash out. We would have spent more money on drinks if anyone ever came back to ask after our first. Also if you have a food allergy, don't bother they don't understand how to accommodate. An eccentric, fantastic local bar and restaurant. I ordered a breakfast pizza off-menu and it was quite delicious and reasonably priced. The flavors weren't particularly strong because I ordered it without bacon (vegetarianism can detract from a food item's flavor) but it was still wonderful. My waiter was fast and helpful, and while the wait for the food was a bit longer than desirable, it still came out within a reasonable time frame. The decor of the bar is totally unique and retro-inspired, and offered an endless amount of entertainment because of its artistic origins. Overall, I'd consider Paddle Hard Brewing a top tier local eatery and bar that anyone would enjoy. read more

I Love PH! The variety of food AND beer is endless!

I have been here a few times now. The last 2 times I went, I sat at the bar and had an awesome experience both times. The bartender was friendly, alert and started conversation with all of the guests which really made it a fun place to be. So far I have gotten the Margarita pizza twice and the taco trio once. The food has been awesome each time and you can usually get in and out within a lunch hour with time to spare. I can't wait to go back when I am not working so I can try some of the craft beers. They have a ton on tap featuring their own brews as well as some other Michigan beers. read more

Maybe it's churlish of me to come back on and dock PH a star, but my last few visits leave me with the conclusion this place is not heading in a good direction. This much I'll say in their favor: their flatbread really is good. I've only had the margherita, but I thought it was near perfect, with a crispy thin crust, tasty sauce, and enough cheese to complement the rest of the ingredients without overwhelming them. The beer is more discouraging. It's just hard to find something among PH's creations that I truly enjoy. While the Marathon IPA is OK, I wouldn't recommend it as a must-try. The flavor is very light for the style. I had a porter a while back that was satisfactory, but only in comparison to the other PH beers I sampled. My main impression was that while they didn't really taste bad, they didn't have any pronounced flavor. They don't embody and put a distinct stamp on their style (IPA, stout, etc.) so much as loosely resemble it. This, or worse, was the case when I went back last week. Nothing at the main pub looked good except the IPA, and it had the effect of making me want a better IPA (which I found down the road at Spike's). the next night I tried the new location on the west side of downtown, and I was happy to see more of their own beers on tap. Many of them are flavored, though, which usually doesn't appeal to me. I did sample a cinnamon sugar stout, and in this the flavoring wasn't bad but the stout, like so many of their beers, was muddled in flavor, and a bit on the watery side. A belgian-ish spiced ale was better, decent in body with a light sweetness, but it had gone flat. I ended up ordering a pint of their amber ale, mainly because I didn't just want to walk out after sucking down three samples. It was unusual for the style, to say the least. Not so much amber as umber in color. It looked and tasted like someone had mixed a pale ale and a brown ale. It was far hoppier than any amber I've had. The management didn't solicit my advice at either location, but if they did, I would say drop the Baskin Robbins approach to brewing (31 flavors) and drill down on making solid versions of basic beer styles (IPAs, stouts, lagers, bocks, etc.) Sure, some breweries do make a wide assortment of flavored beers (Shorts, Founders and so forth) but they make really good beer in the first place. A mediocre beer + flavoring=a mediocre (or worse) beer. I really hope to see (rather, taste) better things from these guys in the future. They have a great atmosphere and yummy food. But I will wait a while before making my return. read more

I would have to be dying of thirst before I would ever set foot in this establishment again. I have visited paddle hard several times I have sampled their beers of which there are very few most of the beers that they have on tap are from other Brewers breweries or companies the ones that they do have are either bad or okay in my opinion, I sent their food on only one occasion and it was enough to make me not want to order food from them again I was very excited when they came to town that excitement didn't last long the service has never been good. The last time I was in there I didn't even order a beer because no one wanted to be bothered to take my order. I'm giving them one star because I couldn't figure out how to give them none. read more

I've had this place on my list to visit go visit for a bit now mostly because of the cool and creative name. It is a very cute, nicely decorated, and quaint place. The beer menu had a good variety to chose from and was right up on the tv's for everyone to see. I settled on the Java Porter wasn't disappointed. Decided to dabble in a flatbread pizza and that was tasty as well. Overall the staff was friendly and prompt. I mentioned getting some ranch for my pizza and the cook heard me and brought it to me himself. Very fast turnaround. Such a fun place! We stopped here after a hike at Hartwick Pines and were pleasantly surprised by the clever decor, great beer selection and delicious pizza.
