Great place, excellent service, very good food. I am on vacation from my travel-for-work job, but I'm still eating out... today brought us to Grayling and Grey Rock for dinner, and it didn't disappoint. I had the basket of chicken tenders with seasoned fries and she had a corned beef sammich with Cole slaw, and we each had a lemonade. The annual Au Sable Canoe Marathon is this weekend (which I was not aware of) and though the place was busy they seated us right away. Our server Katie was a regular customer and joined the staff not long after discovering the place, and we could tell that she enjoys her job. She's good at it, too. When in Grayling, come to the Gray Rock and have an appetizer or a meal, or maybe just a beer or two. Live music and a panoply of comedic talent takes the stage regularly. Great fish and chips, ice cold beer, and friendly service. They have a huge rock made into a table, so that is cool.

Stopped in for a late dinner on Thursday because they were one of the only places open late. Stephanie took care of us and did a great job! I had the Bluegill dinner special and the wife and daughter split a hot turkey sandwich. Food was good including a nice little salad bar which was kept fresh and clean. The two soups (chicken chili and French onion) on the salad bar were excellent! Overall a good evening. Only thing that could make a meal better is if the turkey was sliced thicker instead of the thin lunch meat style slice. I'd like to try the BLT that another customer ordered. It looked amazing too. :) Didn't get a chance to try out the pool table or electronic dart boards but this place has something for everybody. read more

We stood at the entryway for 5 whole minutes without anyone coming to seat us and the OWNER walking by multiple times, going on his phone, behind the bar, etc. Finally, sat us at a table that was dirty and simply removed the empty bud light bottles without even wiping down the table. Took forever to get 2 waters and menus, even helped a table before us without even looking in our direction. Owner walked over, just staring at us waiting to take our order and not even asking properly "what can I get you?" The dining room is also scary. We came in about 8:30 pm on a Saturday evening. There were about 6 customers. It took about 10 minutes before someone came to get our order, then they got it wrong twice. One person, ordered chicken tacos and said the chicken was extremely dry. I ordered the chicken fajitas and the chicken was also extremely dry. It had not much flavor at all and the refried beans that came with the meal, looked like they came straight out of a can, and have been sitting in a pan on the stove for a few hours. Same thing for the rice, it had little flavor and probably came out of a can. The the picture I am posting is a pretty good example of what I'm talking about. This is the chicken fajitas. We came for food and my food came out first, after 20 minutes, my Mother's food came out. Their reason? Out of mash potatoes, had to make them fresh. So why not time it so that both meals come out together? They give ridiculous excuses. Okay at the time to pay we notice a surcharge of $3.50 for sweet potato fries, but there supposed to be included in a shrimp basket, because I'm not paying $11.50 for 5 pieces of shrimp alone ..so when we asked about this our waitress snapped and screamed for the manager because she wasn't "putting up with this sh*t". We showed the menu which states it's included and the manager said "Oh it's not our fault it's a computer error"... Wtf.? How many people are they over or double charging and not noticing? Seems really shady to make it the customer's responsibility to dispute the error and then deflect with excuses all while taking no ownership or responsibility. I really can't say enough good things about the food/drink at Gray Rock - have ate there 10+ times and everything has been amazing. From an amazing Father's Day steak special to buffalo Mac and cheese the Gray Rock has enough choices to keep your taste buds entertained for a long time. My family got a lot of food: shrimp basket, chicken basket, prime rib burger, pulled pork sandwich, pretzels, and fried mushrooms. All of it was delicious. Comedy night...we went early for dinner, included with tickets to show. Dinner was corn on the cob, corn bread, baked beans, and BBQ ribs. ALL YOU CAN EAT. We enjoyed the food very much, only neg comment was beans should have been in side bowl rather than getting into bread and veggie. But the food and drinks were so very good and the show do fun. I used to love this place, I was here twice a week for months. They had great food, and I loved their ranch. However, 90% of the times i've been here, I have waited ridiculous amounts of time for service. Waiting over an hour to just have my drink order taken (after having to go up to the bar or chase the server down when they're not even busy) and then another hour to get a food order in. The cooks kill it every time, but the servers are horrible. Extremely lacking in customer service in every aspect and just plain rude half the time. If you come here, be ready to serve yourself. Having to go and ask to put your drink order in, ask to get refill, ask for someone to take your order, and to top it off, go find someone just to ask for the check. There are few good waitresses here but it's not worth the money and the three hour wait for half decent bar food. I will not be coming back anymore. read more

Wish I could leave negative stars..food was good but not for what we went through and not after waiting almost 2 hours. We had a large party and called ahead and were told they could accommodate us all. The waiter who turned out to be the owner insisted we all sit at a huge long table together only to later find out he would not let us sit where we wanted so that he could charge us a 20% fee for the kitchen help since we were a group over 10, people, rather then letting us sit in our own families or groups. This did not cover the waitress tip btw, that was separate. When taking orders he refused to write anything down or onto individual bills which later caused immense confusion for everyone. Said the f word multiple times in front of our small children, messed up multiple orders, and then when came time to pay charged multiple people for the same orders!! After discussing with our party he had scammed us out of at least $60 between overcharging everyone and putting wrong items on everyone's orders. My mother's salad bar was paid for twice and he kept trying to get me to pay for items that I didn't order and that people in my party had already paid for. We were later informed that he does this all the time. Messes up people's orders and SCAMS PEOPLE by over charging or multiple charging. When I refused to pay a $96 bill for 3 items I ordered I asked why it was so much and he proceeded to tell me there were items that the others in my party had not paid for (after they had all already paid their bills) and when I said it was ridiculous and that they should have put us on separate orders and separate bills one of his waitresses proceeded to yell at me in front of my 10 yr old (which the owner allowed) to the point he ended up running out of the building crying. HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE! Do not waste your time. You will end up paying for your meal at least 2-3 times over. read more

He was very nice, but we had to ask for everything twice. Our food came out in three waves. There were 5 in our party. The food was all cold. The waiter then got all our bills mixed up. I, among many other people, have had bad experiences with the bartender Stacey. She is a power tripper and had me barred for a month for no reason. I did speak to the owner which I did appreciate that. But there could've been steps done to actually rectify the situation. Also, the bartender shouted out a racial slur which made my group feel uncomfortable. I mentioned this to the owner, however, they still decided they needed to take their employees side. I just don't think people should be saying the N-word let alone on the job, representing their establishment and have no repercussions. read more

My family and I ordered a large variety of food - Mussels, Bavarian breadsticks, Cubano and Reuben sandwiches, Walleye Dinner, Wet Burrito Dinner, Soup and Salad bar. This place was a little different than we expected. The restaurant building looked like it could have been an Amvets or Eagles club at one time. Once inside we noticed that it was very warm. I'm not sure if they were having a problem with their air conditioning or if the building even had a central unit to condition it. We ended up sitting as close to what appeared to be a temporary ac unit in the back room. This helped a lot. My family has been coming here for years, as we all have cabins in Grayling, and we never miss an opportunity to stop in while we're in town (Especially on Fridays for karaoke). In short, the Gray Rock looks like a dive on the outside, but is up-north-quality on the inside. Food: Their menu is extensive & I've never tried anything I didn't like. The salad bar comes with many meals & is stocked and fresh. You MUST try the boom boom shrimp, or request a side of boom boom sauce with your meal. A delicious, tangy sauce with a kick, that I've never had anywhere else! Drinks: what can I say? They're cheap, strong & they keep them coming! Service: the service, in all honesty, has never blown me away. But we've never left on a Friday night thirsty or hungry - the servers have always tried to keep up with our typically large and rowdy parties. At times when very busy, we've left our table to grab a drink at the bar for faster service. Not the end of the world -I've never had an experience that would stop me from coming back. Karaoke: We love coming here on Friday night for karaoke, which starts around 9:30. Everyone is a star at the Gray Rock on Friday night! The place gets pretty packed and rowdy on Fridays, definitely the place to be. We have a blast here every time we come. In summary -the Gray Rock is definitely the "up north" spot, for both locals and visitors alike. I definitely recommend stopping in and giving it a try. read more

This restaurant/ bar is located in Grayling' s industrial park, in a nondescript pole building near the entrance. We were in the neighborhood trying to escape the road construction on Grayling' s main drag and thought we' d give the place a try based on other Yelpers' comments. We were unsurprised to find, upon entering, a pretty spartan interior with a dark, cluttered stage and a handful of late morning barflies loudly discussing politics while a longsuffering bartender looked as if she wanted to be anywhere else. An overflow dining area was a bit cheerier, decorated with canoe race memorabilia. There was also an adjacent, rustic- motif game room with pool table, dartboards and card tables. Well, first the good news: Our lunches were delicious -- exceeded our expectations for a drankin' bar in an industrial park. I started out with a chicken rice soup that was...well, as good as Mom's. Then my sandwich arrived; a turkey/ cheese/ cranberry sauce combo on a light, eggy brioche bun. The turkey was the real thing, not deli slices -- bonus. My partner had a Cuban sandwich that, while not a real pressed Cubano, was incredibly tasty. on a crusty artisan bun. We were very pleasantly surprised by the quality of our meals. Now the bad news: At least on the day we visited, the service was awful. Our server was lackadaisical, slower than molasses and disorganized; I coudn' t imagine her functioning during a busier time. We also noticed that tables of males who' d arrived later than we did were getting served first...ahem. Our verdict: If we were ravenously hungry and not on a timetable, we might -- might-- come back, purely on the strength of the food. When they entered the restaurant the usual pleasant greeting was anything but, the service was hardly any but dirty looks and glares. These new "employees" should not be in the industry of costumer service. Gray rock cafe is tucked away in graylings industrial district. I honestly never knew it existed until my brother began working at a factory on this road. It's a metal airplane hangar style building. Parking lot is spacious and wraps around. Stepping inside you truly see how the space opens up... it's huge! There's a separate game/arcade room. A bar with a live music area and Dance floor. Then the traditional dining rooms. As you walk in you'll notice a huge cray rock literally designed in the center of a tall top wood table. Nice touch. We sat and were served drinks and informed of specials immediately. My parents joined us for dinner, they are regulars here and adore the waiter Kevin. This evening we had nick and he was awesome! Funny, quick and thoughtful. Shared 2 appetizers, the fried mushrooms and boom boom shrimp (their version of bang bang shrimp made famous at bone fish grill) then We literally all ordered the Friday fish and chips. Sooooo good. Best in town. It's fresh cod fillets beer battered with twice fried French fries, cole slaw AND soup/salad bar. Seafood chowder was spicy but delicious. Salad bar allowed for many options. It's basically a bar with a few rooms of tables--so it's pretty sparse and doesn't really feel like a restaurant. They have a fairly extensive menu and everything looked good--so I asked the waitress for a recommendation. Unfortunately, I wasn't thrilled with the crispy chicken wrap--it was okay, but certainly nothing to write home about. That said, the other meals that were ordered around me looked better so I'd definitely go there again and try something else. Had the fish dinner. Fish was greasy. The service was a little poor. I was done with my dinner and a beer before the waitress decided to check on me. She did not ask if my meal was good or anything. My husband and I were very excited to go to this restaurant. We were spending the night in Grayling and wanted to get Carry-out at a great place. (Had to get Carry-out because of Covid19). My husband ordered the Sizzler with double mushrooms and a potato. I got the hot turkey sandwich. My husband said his steak was awful & that he could have cooked a better steak. The steak was ordered medium, but it came well done. It was over cooked and there was no flavoring whatsoever. The mushrooms didn't taste good either and there were very little of them. The potato was the only thing that was good. The steak got a E GRADE. My meal was okay, but it was deli turkey. The gravy was okay though cold by the time we got back to the hotel. The side salad was not good. The dressing tasted terrible. All in all don't order the steak and make sure you have a microwave in your hotel room to heat up the sandwich. We did thank goodness. The lady who brought us our meal was very nice so that is a plus. Also they bring your meal out to your car, so that is a a nice touch. This was our first time eating from here. We like to eat at home which makes it tough to get quality food to go cuz we live 10-15 mins out of town. Anyway, I ordered the 1/2 pound of boneless wings with twisty fries(they are a hybrid of curly fries and wedges) and my gf got the sweet turkey sandwich with homemade chips. My wings I ordered plain and they were great! They were cooked crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside(just as they should be) and these type of fries I had never even heard of but they were awesome. My gf kept moaning with pleasure while she was eating her turkey sandwich(should speak for itself haha) and those chips!! The chips look like they were professionally done(obviously they were haha). They were awesome as well!! Overall everything was great and I can't wait to eat there again! PS: if you couldn't tell the food was still great when we got home! :-) read more
