Very good bakery and don't be deceived by the looks of the place before you enter. Very small inside, almost similar to a tiny bagel shop. Everything is usually very good and fresh . Though did pick-up a lemon meringue pie from there today and it was a bit stale with hard pie crust and rubbery meringue. Besides that it tasted okay . I will give them the benefit of the doubt as, in business , everything can't always be perfect. I guess next time I will verify that the pie was made today . I never met a cake I didn't like, EXCEPT THE & 7 LAYER CAKE FROM PACKANACK BAKERY! I can't describe what it was but something was ill tasting, it had a really weird taste, even the chocolate frosting was nasty! I rarely return things, but this cake was so awful that I made an exception. So, I enter the bakery, politely go to the back of the shop, discreetly tell the young lady that my family and I didn't like the cake, right away she asked me to elaborate, I simply said it wasn't good, I've had plenty of cakes, I'm a huge sweet eater, and this was difficult to get down. So with this an older woman who I'm assuming was the owner starts to question me, interrogate me over the exact problem with the cake, SERIOUSLY!!! I bought the cake cause I wanted to eat it, I'm sorry, I couldn't get it down. They both made me feel very uncomfortable, the older woman wasn't satisfied with my answers, she was visibly annoyed, then they both disappear to the back of the shop where the cake inspection begins!. This was so much more than I expected, I've spent 5 minutes justifying why I returned the cake, no one believes me and now I'm getting annoyed, this is so ridiculous. After several more minutes the young lady returns with the final decision, the compensation is 6 donuts and only 6 for the cake that was 100% delicious! I stupidly asked if I could have a crumb cake, the word from the top was no, 6 donuts only. Why would you treat anyone like this? I'm 60 years old, I'm polite, reasonable and outraged that they would treat anyone the way they treated me, so condescending! This has been my family's go to bakery for many years now. One of the only legit bakeries still around in this area. It is small on the inside but packed with many sweet treats. A must try if you stop in here is the CRUMB CAKE!! It is the best in the area, have not found anything that can compare to it. It comes in 2 varieties, one with icing and one without. It has more crumbs than cake. They also have wide selection of cakes, donuts, cupcakes, and cookies. I have never had anything I didn't like from here. I am so glad I found this gem of a bakery!! I recently ordered my sons cake and cupcakes from here to celebrate his 2nd birthday. The ordering process was simple and easy and the girl at the counter made great suggestions as I don't always order from a bakery let alone what goes on or in a cake or cupcake. Hah. Everyone at the birthday party loved the cake we didn't have anymore slices left and the cupcakes were the first things gone amongst the kiddos. Everything was fresh and so delicious. We ordered a 10" round vanilla cake w Bavarian cream and fresh strawberries inside. My sons favorite! He had the best time. The cupcakes were so light and sweet. As he walks into the kitchen with his bakery boxes in hand, there are always at least 6-7 people silently waiting; like vultures investigating a kill. Don't be fooled - I'm the mother lioness amongst the pack licking my chops. The coffee cake is unlike anything you can ever explain - kind of like why the sky is blue. Such a little gem tucked away in the Food Town strip mall on 23. It's a smaller bakery but they do have a large variety of cakes and other baked items. I have been to Packanack several times and I can tell you that nothing brings a smile to my client's face faster than their delicious baked treats. A customer recommended the bakery as a staff favorite and I now make a point to stop there whenever I'm in the area. The office said the blueberry crumb cake is outstanding and the blueberry cranberry mandarin cake got big thumbs up! Everyone at the bakery is always super friendly and helpful and the prices are definitely budget-friendly. Treats from Packanack are the closest thing to homemade and a huge step up from mass-produced desserts. It's so nice that still have local places like this. Less so: we had ordered a lamb cake (see picture #6). as one of our guests commented, "it looks like they spent a good long while perfecting the shape of the body of the lamb, and spent 3 seconds putting the eyes on and making the head. Holy Cannoli! Im sitting at work watching the clock 4 hours until I get to go home. In walks in my manager with once again a random treat for his team. He walks past my cubicle with a white box and immediately like a swarm of locus my co-workers are in hot pursuit for their fix. Best crumb cake in NJ! Their best batches of crumb cake are from the sheets of crumb cake they bake fresh daily. Their smaller sized square sheets (9 x 9?) do not taste nearly the same for some reason. Neither do the edge pieces of their large sheets. What you want to see when you get there is 1/2 inch or less of actual cake and the rest actual buttery soft and partially gooey crumb. The good stuff is usually found by going for one of the middle pieces. They do sell out of certain items if you do not go early enough. While this review is focused on one of their many items baked daily, you will also find good quality doughnuts, bread, and cakes there as well. If you prefer the dried out style of crumb-cake with a three-week shelf life, go elsewhere. read more
