Reviews praising Brian reflect work done by a skilled technician who no longer appears to be with this shop. Current service under Paul does not reflect that same standard. Read carefully before trusting positive reviews. Every glowing review you see is about Brian. Brian left this business to Paul sometime around mid-2025. These are two fundamentally different experiences under the same business name. That distinction is not obvious and it matters enormously. Brian? Stellar. Replaced a clutch including master and slave cylinder, fast and fairly priced. Clearly knew European engineering. Paul? A different story entirely. Under Paul's ownership: 3 months of delays to replace a clutch and ball joint on a camper van being used as emergency housing by a Lahaina fire survivor. This was a fact Paul was explicitly told - SOMEONE LIVES IN THIS VEHICLE. Phone goes straight to voicemail, always. It was also made clear to provide an estimate BEFORE doing the work. After nearly begging for the vehicle back, we received a massive bill including $75 for fuel and $80 for a locking gas cap on a vehicle returned with NO gas in the tank. $75 more than fills this tank even at $5/gal. The gas station is less than one block away, they surely did not drive 200 miles to make sure the repairs were solid. During that same job Paul's team broke the speedometer cable, didn't mention it, and let the vehicle drive away with no fuel and no functional speedometer. When we returned, Paul claimed it "must have broken on its own" and quoted hours of labor at $180/hr plus $200 for a part available online for $50la. This is labor that existed solely because his team broke a part during their normal repair job. Even if it was old and fragile they could have at least warned us. After 3 months of waiting for parts... and a $3800 bill for a clutch that cost $1600 from Brian a few years earlier... only to then have to come back and have them try to gouge us further. So while he is trying to sell us on overpriced repairs for damages his team did I ask him about the loud exhaust, because now it just sounds LOUD. That brings us to: In a subsequent insurance claim Paul promised to photograph the exhaust damage and submit an estimate promptly. He waited so long the claim closed. We had to chase him down by voicemail -- naturally -- to get the estimate submitted at all. We ordered every part on his estimate with expedited shipping to HAWAII. No delays this time. Brought everything to the shop, laid the parts out, walked him through fitment, assured him not only did we order all the parts and correct part numbers received, but we ordered parts he failed to list. Paul warned us that since we supplied parts he "couldn't guarantee they'd be correct." This is about parts sourced directly from his own insurance estimate that he wrote. One week later, no call. We called. Voicemail. He called back to inform us the parts were wrong. Paul submitted that estimate to the insurance company based on stock OEM catalog data, without physically inspecting a vehicle with obviously custom dual exhaust. He did not verify that the parts he put on the estimate matched the actual components on this specific van. When confronted, he blamed us, refused to acknowledge the error was his, and suggested a few hours of welding at shop rates would solve a problem created entirely by his own incomplete assessment. Had he ordered the parts himself, at his leisure, and then discovered they were the wrong parts he would have had to leisurely order correct parts, likely increasing the costs due to his own negligence in managing insurance claims. What Paul didn't know: I have been the primary mechanic on this vehicle for years. I only hire out work I don't want to deal with. I know exactly what competent inspection looks like. I told him I would rather do the work myself than be lied to one more time and billed double on the entire job for 15 minutes of welding and a pile of wrong parts he had us order. Brian earned every positive review here. Paul has earned none of them. Buyer beware. read more

My father took his 2000 Volvo S70 SE in to have a back window fixed as the switch needed to be replaced. They charged $379.41 for this service saying the part cost $206.99. Overcharging for a part is one thing but the insincerity and dishonesty from what was quoted (including the diagnosis) and the final cost is very bothersome. My parents are older 80+ so easy to take advantage of - After my father told me the story of this business getting over on him I felt compelled to post so others can be forewarned. STAY THE HECK AWAY FROM THIS PLACE!! Latest Update: After their timing belt and coolant flush service, my motor started squeaking so I brought the car back to have it checked out. They said that my serpentine bearings were bad and recommended replacing them, they also proceeded to charge me $120 for the recall visit. I went to Lexus dealer for an honest 2nd opinion and what I found out was that there was nothing wrong with my bearings and that my serpentine belt was very dry and that is what caused the squeak. Lexus replaced my serpentine belt which was an in and out quick job and my car no longer squeaks. Pacific Motor Works, Thanks for spilling coolant on my serpentine belt and making it squeak, thanks for charging me $120 for a recall visit and last but not least, thanks for trying to cover up your mistakes by trying to sell me replacement of serpentine bearings so you can replace the serpentine belt you've ruined along with that while you're doing the service in hopes that I never find out. I've consulted with 4 other mechanics including the dealership and all 4 opposed doing a flush on my vehicle. - They recommended an oil type other then what a car manufacturer and car manual recommends. I'm sorry but I will trust engineers who built my car and not a Kula Mechanic on what oil type I should use. - After a timing belt change, my car is now squeaking, I took it to them to look into it and in return got a surprise bill of $120. Gave them a benefit of a doubt and asked if they can credit that towards the repairs they were recommending and they didn't even want to be open for that... Another mechanic told me that cars don't just start squeaking on their own after a timing belt change and I can only agree to that statement. My car did not squeak for 14 years and all of a sudden after having this shop work on it, my car now squeaks and sounds terrible every-time I start it, not to mention that this is my 2nd timing belt change. - After they serviced my car, every-time I drive up hill now, I'm getting a terrible burning rubber smell, never had it before. They only charged me $120 to tell me they didn't know what it was and thought it might be the rust proofing.. only problem is rust proofing smells different and the smell is getting worst by day.. A mechanic and a business owner who truly genuinely cares about his clients will always provide his clients with options available to them, as well as pros and cons of every option. This shop owner had failed to do that. This shop owner has also decided that a customer who just spent over $3,500, who simply needed a confirmation that nothing was wrong with his car after they've just serviced it and now the car is smelling burnt and making noise, that it's better to charge a customer $120 more and tell him that he has new other problems needing to be fixed. Paul and his team did a fantastic job servicing my '86 bmw which needed a valve adjustment, brakes, transmission mounts, water pump, thermostat, several belts and hoses, and other miscellaneous repairs. The work took a while, but it was a lot of work and it does take some time to get parts here from the mainland. In my opinion they are experts at serving these cars, and I found them to be very professional and friendly. SHADY BUSINESS PRACTICES! My friend brought her jeep here after 2 weeks she calls to say she is coming in to pick it up. After waiting 50 minutes at the shop, some chick pulls up in it and starts taking out her beach stuff. The jeep is filthy inside, full of sand and oil. The jeep also has an additional 200 miles on it!!! What! Yesterday my boyfriends truck clutch hose went, he was right in front of this business, they wanted 150.00 and would keep it over night. This place is terrible! I took my car there to get fixed and three days later they called me to pick up the car and they hadn't even touched the car for the problem I brought it in for. They did however inspect the entire car for me and charged me $175. They told me to fix my problem it would cost $2000. I went home purchased a simply relay and fixed it myself for $35. Ask around about these guys, they are known for being terrible. If you want a good laugh read their contract when you drop the car off. You have to sign off that you will pay for any work they do even if they don't give you a quote or you don't ask for it! Freaking heroes! Had a super bad night and was getting ready to head home and immediately realized I had a flat when I pulled off, thing sounded horrible and was almost off the rim couldn't make it down the street let alone the nearest gas station luckily I was right in front of this place. It was the middle of the night and they were actually closed but I saw someone outside working on a car and asked for help. He obliged attempted to put air in which of course didn't work (crap tire) and then proceeded to change my flat using my spare I apologized for it being so late and had mentioned my jack and tools were in my other car but he was extremely nice and didn't seem bothered at all he got me back on the road in no time and free of charge not sure why but I am completely grateful. This place is a scam. Do not under any circumstance take your vehicle there. I had overheated going up poli poli. I made it downhill to the nearest shop. There was a plastic T that cracked. It was a 2 dollar t you can find at ace. It was replaced and I was told to leave my van there and if I decided to take it, the engine would blow up. I'm a captain and am good with engines and mechanical work. I just needed to get it in and get it out without stress. I didn't want to leave it with them with over a 2500 dollar quote for a new radiator etc. the van wasn't worth 1200 dollars. I respectfully asked if I could take my chances and said I just needed to make it to Kihei. Well he wasn't lying about it overheating again. I paid my 250 for an hour worth of work and a 2 dollar t inline with the cooling system. I drove away and started to overheat immediately after they went on a 10 minute test drive knowing they did not add water in the radiator. How do I know? I pulled over, let the engine cool, checked the water/ radiator fluid level and it was bone dry. I had to walk and carry gallons of water back to the van. I Havnt had a problem since after 2 years. Crooks and you know what you did. Stay away from these con artists. read more

5 stars!!!! Great service and mechanics. We went in for a repair on my Prius, our head gasket blew out which is an expensive and complicated repair. They explained everything super kindly to me (someone who doesn't know a lot about cars), gave me an accurate estimate, and kept me updated throughout the repair. Before bringing our car in it consistently went into limp mode, kept overheating, and always had at least three warning lights on, but it's driving perfectly now:) definitely would recommend this place and Brian is great!! read more

10/10 in every category I have a 2010 Mercedes Benz and it had a rattling every time it started up and heavy heavy vibrations throughout the car once I got up to 40 50 MPH... I thought I was in serious trouble, turns out the new Mercedes specialist Peter, diagnosis's that it was only the mounts. The engine mounts and transmission mount were flattened and I needed new ones. He not only solved the problem that day, he also gave me tips about the car and things to be aware of later down the road as far as maintenance and upkeep. Very professional, Calm and skilled, I know he cares about his work and I'll be coming back when necessary. The manager Brian at the front desk took very good care of me too, had great customer service. I did some calling around and they had the best price. heard great things about this company from coworkers and friends and I'm happy to have had the experience I did. Duped and duped again. Be forewarned!!! I brought my European car in for a minor repair, but they kept calling me that they needed to do more work. My car had just been completely checked out before transporting it on island...After 10 days and some difficult phone calls, they gave me my car back and I ended up paying over $1,100. If that were not all, I found out, exactly 100 miles later and after the dashboard warning signs came back on (yes, they had been switched off), that they CUT the cables of my tail light at 3 different places and closed the whole thing back up so I would not see it. I have pictures to prove it. I guess they wanted more work. But not a chance in h**l that I will go back there. read more

These guys don't know what the heck they're doing and they hope you don't either! I was referred to this place through a friend of a friend. I needed a specialist for my vintage bmw after having a fuel pump replaced by a very expensive mobile mechanic I began to have other symptoms I thought might be related to the previous work. I needed a foreign car specialist to get me on the road safely and asap! They told me I needed to replace the "valve gasket " which involves taking the motor apart. Charged me 370$ and gave me a long list of all the hoses that needed to be replaced (yes I know the car is old, I can see it with my own eyes the hoses are worn) but the car had been purring along beautifully before and I just wanted the "problem " fixed but instead they obviously did not have a clue, put a bandaid on it, shined up my rims for no reason, and gave me back a Broken Car!!! It backfired out of the garage! I rolled back up and looked over it with their technician and the owner Paul and they pointed out all the potential problems, I noticed that all the fluids were low but they didn't even bother to top them off even after taking the engine apart! That was a red flag of just how inconsiderate a Service this was. I drove it to work and barely made it back home- I had to pull over like 6x-- very dangerous! Absolutely NO improvements so I took it back and told me that for 470$ more they would replace more hoses, but admitted no fault, nor willing to credit for the previous and useless attempts! I'm fuming at this point; they accused me that the car was worse after I took it home and so rude about it- I picked up the car immediately after. There are more broken cars at this garage than running ones. I wish I read these other horrifying reviews before taking mine in.. RUN! read more

Do not go here!!! Yikes, these guys are the biggest crooks I've ever encountered. They try to get you to sign an authorization that basically agrees to whatever they want and whatever they want to charge you! Do not sign anything!!! They will end up with your car as you won't be able to pay their bill. They have dozens of cars on their lot from people who signed this authorization (it's usually blank and they fill it in later) and now can't get their car back. Watch out for these crooks. I have a BMW and have been looking for a place with decent pricing here on Maui for a while now and now I have definitely found the place. Excellent service, they will tell you what you need for your car and what you do not need compared to the dealership. The entire staff was very friendly and approachable. At the end of the day I know I have people who know what they are doing working on my car. They even had the computer tool I needed to update my car as well which is a rare find here on the island. Please avoid this shop! I took my truck there over a year ago to have an 02 sensor bung welded onto my exhaust. Simple enough right? WRONG- the ASE certified mechanic installed the bung at an angle where the tip of the 02 sensor would be facing upwards thus collecting condensation and ruining the sensor. When I saw his work and informed him of this he tried to argue with me! This knowledge is well documented and can be found anywhere on the internet when researching 02 sensor installation. So I wasn't backing down and he agreed to fix the problem by cutting the section of pipe, rotating it so the bung would be at a proper angle, and then re-welding the pipe. Well the next day I came to pick up my truck he informed me that he took the shortcut of heating up the pipe and then twisting it to achieve the right angle. Needless to say that my exhaust pipe was distorted in shape and looked like crap! But he did get an angle that worked for the 02 sensor so I bit my tongue where most customers wouldn't have. Sometimes I am too nice. My truck drove well for the next year until my 02 sensor failed last week(not the shop's fault).When I removed the sensor for replacement I noticed that the threads on my brand new 02 sensor bung were badly stripped and I know exactly how that happened. Our wonderful ASE mechanic had used the bung with a spark plug installed as a leverage point to torque on the exhaust pipe while twisting it and applied so much pressure that he nearly ruined the threads. He obviously does not respect the customers property and only cares about getting the car out of his shop and collecting. Run as far as possible from this jerk! read more

I found Paul easy to communicate with, genuine in his assessments and recommendations. Over all I would recommend Pacific Motor Works to a friend or family member. Very dishonest rip off service. I took my Audi to get new brakes and tires. After WEEKS without my car, I received a gigantic bill, with the brake parts costing twice as much as what Audi Service itself charged. They charged me for Audi tires, but the tires were NOT Audi, as corroborated by the Audi Service Center - I pointed out to them the difference between bonafide Audi tires, with the logo on the side, and the lack of logo on the tires they had put on. They tried to convince me I was wrong. I talked to my friend who works in the DCCA office on Maui, and she told me of the numerous complaints against this operation. STAY AWAY. Please be cautious at Pacific Motor Works. I brought my truck in with transmission issues, and I received an incorrect diagnosis. This led to $1,400 of unnecessary repairs. After the repairs were made and the truck still had the same symptoms, I went to M & D transmissions in Wailuku to have the real problem fixed. ALL of the bad reviews are 100% true and I cannot believe this shop is still in business! I took my Volvo years ago because the USED to be the recommended Volvo repair shop. I called Volvo corporate to let them know the completely shady practices of this shop. I had pretty minor body work to be done and not only did they keep my car for over 2 months but then when they finally were done they tried to charge me over $800 for doing a full service which I didn't authorize and they said I could not get my car until I paid it! They had me sign a form which they said gave them the authorization to do any repairs they wanted even though they didn't point that out in the form. When I went with my boyfriend to pick up the car, luckily I had another key to get the car out after the charges were already paid for but only for what I authorized. Then he began to tell me he was going to call the police and I told him to go ahead and do hat since he himself already had a warrant out for his arrest (which I was able to find out before I went to pick up my car) I was planning to call the police when I got there anyways so he made it much easier for them to pick him up! Total and absolute crooks and you should avoid them at all costs! It really is unbelievable these guys are still I'm business!! Maybe if yelp was around back when this happened to me they wouldn't be! Hopefully more people will let the residents of Maui know about companies like this!! And BTW, I saw Paul's response to my review and believe me, if yelp would have been around when this happened I would have had my review up right away! I AM a real person and this really did happen to me! I am so sick of companies and unethical business people here in Maui that are able to stay in business just because there is very little competition and they think they can rip off customers and do whatever they want! I made sure I contacted Volvo corporate to take them off their authorized repair shop list that is for sure! And yes, Paul had a warrant for his arrest at that time and they did pick him up but obviously he got away with whatever he did and is still getting away with his horrible business practices since he is still in business!
