Where do I start! Our project was to remove the carpeting from the stairs and replaced with luxury vinyl planks, LVP. Additionally, we wanted to replace the wooden spindles with iron and have him stain the handrails. I chose this company as they were able to accommodate both projects.
Day 1, estimate day: Late. Did not call to inform us of delay. I called him. Excuses given. Arrived 2 hours after agreed time. Great portfolio.
Reasonably priced. Signed contract. Start date discussed. Forms of payment allowed: Venmo. cash. check
Day 2, removal of carpet only: Late 3 hours after agreed time. Excuses given
Day 3, first day of stair treading install: Late 3 hours after agreed time. Excuses given. Came with one employee in a personal car. Employee sanded a few stairs. Matthew measured one stair and planned the install. Matthew applied the water seal. Had to wait for the seal to dry, so the day ended.
Day 4, stair treading install. Late 3 hours after agreed time. Excuses given. He arrived, unprepared, via Uber (states he had car issues) and asked to use some our our own personal tools! I was shocked. Our tools are not made for flooring. He knows what our project entails and should come prepared. Matthew completed ONE stair in the 4 hours he was in our home. Excuses given why it took so long to install one stair. Stated that he could complete 10 stairs by the next day and he quoted, "If i can't complete 10 stairs by the next day, we could fire him." Additionally, he asked for more money for sanding of the railing, which I said, "No, it is written in the contract that it is covered." He tried to tell me that was not covered. He smoked in the vicinity of our front door, which the smoke traveled into or home. He asked me for 1/2 payment, which I stated I paid already, and I showed him proof.
Day 5, stair treading install: me and husband at work, my college kids were at home. Late 4 hours after agreed time. Excuses given. Borrowed OUR extension cord from the garage, used OUR nails for the flooring and used MY paint thiner without asking for permission from anyone. Additionally, went into our kitchen and got a glass to drink water, again without permission. Upon my arrival from work only one stair was barely completed. He was using our nails to nail the bullnose. So in the 3 1/2 hours Matthew was in our home, only one stair was done. So all in all, in a matter of 7 1/2 hours, only 2 stairs were completed. We fired him on the spot. He asked for payment for the 2 completed stairs, which I reluctantly gave him. He insisted on cash, which i did not have. He even had the audacity to ask me to go the bank and pull out cash. I said, "NO!" I told him contract states cash, Venmo and check. You will be paid via Venmo. Left via Uber
Additional issues:
1. Matt always wanted to be paid in cash as he was having "issues with his
Venmo account."
2. Would not wear his mask consistently, despite us repeatedly asking him to wear due to pandemic. We even taped a sign on the wall stating "please wear face mask while in or home."
3. He did not wear any uniform. Wore jeans, which is fine, but they were consistently falling low so you could see his underwear.
4. One time. Matt and I were talking. He put his hand in his front jean pocket, looking for a tool. Instead a syringe came out. He said it was for his "diabetes". I am a nurse practitioner. Really? Anyone with diabetes knows that insulin needs to be kept in a cool container like a refrigerator or lunch box with ice. He never came to our home with any type of lunch box. Only a bottled drink and a candy bar. You be the judge. of this.
5. I had to constantly contact him to see if he had ordered the flooring or spindles. I should not have to do that. I ended up ordering my spindles from an online company. Matthew ordered the flooring , however ordered it from a different manufacturer from the one that I have wanted. He stated that it was the same product, but a different name and cheaper price.
6. Matthew has two names for his company, and two different phone numbers, so client beware. The name of his other company is Walker Pacific Flooring Art.
7. He does not have a designated truck for his business. He uses personal cars and Uber. Really!
8. Matthew had to be reminded of the invoice number for the flooring that he had personally ordered. He had to be reminded that I had paid him for 1/2 of the project. At one point he asked me a question about the tile in our bathroom. I told him he must be confusing me with another client as we are not having any bathroom upgrades
9. He had mixed up my flooring order with another client, which was reflected when I contacted the flooring company and they could not find my order without the info from my credit card.
As much as we wanted him to finish the project, he lacked professionalism and had subpar work ethics. read more
