I had an appointment with Dr. Hulburd at Pacific Eye in Paso Robles, CA on January 6, 2026. I was sent to a technician who could not work the testing machine property. As I leaned into the machine my back hurt, a lot. I walked away to find a chair to ease the pain. The technician complained to Dr. Hulburds assistant that I was refusing treatment. I am a registered nurse who worked for many years at UCLA Medical Center and at Jules Stein Eye Institute. I know how patients should be treated and how a medical office should be run. In my opinion this was just another example of Pacific Eye hiring mediocre and outright incompentent staff who not only does not know how to do their jobs properly but who are rude and inconsiderate to the patients and then additionally create needless conflict between the doctors and their patients created by the rudeness and incompetence of their staff who try to shift the blame of their failed effort on the patients. read more

The Doctors here are great, I have been going for several years to this clinic and received great care for my eyes. However sometimes I have other problems at this location. Some things that have happened recently over the last year or 2 that are making me consider finding a new place to go. - One appointment for a visual field test late last year I think, and I waited 30-40 minutes, I was told someone forgot to start up the machine and that it takes that long to initialize. Another time, the machine broke and I had to drive to San Luis Obispo for the test. - I have had to reschedule an appointment recently and its difficult. I had to call multiple times and no one picks up the phone, I leave messages and nobody calls back. I used the Klara app and get no response other then a link to schedule a new appointment - which doesn't help with cancelling an existing one. After several calls I finally got someone. - Another appointment about 6 months ago, one of the assistants seem to give me a difficult time about my glasses which I got at another local optical shop previously. They remarked the glasses looked old and didn't seem to believe the prescription was right. My prescription didn't change from the last 2 eye exams and I see 20 / 20 with the glasses so they are fine. I let them scan the glasses to confirm the prescription. But I also recall them asking why I didn't get the glasses at Pacific Eye's optical shop which is really none of their business. read more

It's been approx. 3 months since the office posted a response but try as I might, I wasn't able to access their referred site. I even contacted their tech person but didn't get much help. Still no resolution to the issue. In speaking with others, I'm not the only one who has paid for special lenses that didn't do what they promoted. read more

Don't come here if you have anything else to do for the rest of the day. Waited 30 minutes to get into an exam room. Stuck here in the exam room now for 15 minutes and counting without a sign that anyone is coming. If you never hear from me again, tell my family that I love them. read more

Overall, this is a great place for your eyes. Dr. Oldenburg is very kind an human. Treat his patients with good care and makes you feel really good. The staff in his office are very professional and Kind. The quality of service is excellent. read more

I see Dr Horne for my annual eye exams. He is so thorough and, even though I have terrible vision (20/400!) he has been able to get me back to 20/20 with contact lenses. I had an eye exam done with Dr Horne and he was able to answer any and all my questions about contacts. I just recently saw Dr Hulburd for eye pain just 2 days ago and he took a look at my eye and sent drops to my pharmacy right away. Staff is amazing and overall was a great experience. The techs here are hopeless. During the past two years, they've screwed up my prescription twice, each year. It's incredible. This year, their error necessitated a second exam. I was prescribed a temporary prism. They put it on upside-down. So I was seeing double for six weeks confounded as to why I was not acclimating to the prism. I go in for the follow up, and Dr. Hulburd peels off the prism and turns it over. Et voila! Dr. Hulburd apologized and told me "no charge for this exam." He ordered another temporary prism. This time the techs put it on sideways. See photo below. Finally, they mailed my glasses to Orange County where they correctly applied the prism. I went back for my third exam. Dr. Hulburd apologized again, said "No charge for this exam." Then he had his assistant walk me to the front desk and instruct the clerk, "No charge today." Then the clerk said, "OK, no charge, you're all set." A week later they sent me a bill for both of the exams. It's just unbelievably bad here. Next time I'll just drive to Orange County. read more

Doctors seem to be knowledgeable and helpful. Support staff, specifically billing and scheduling are HORRIBLE! They don't understand how insurance works, specifically Medicare. Medicare does not pay for an Optometrist visit, yet the girl in the billing dept said that they do. I've had Medicare for over 10 yrs now and not once have they ever paid for an OD. Even their website states they do not pay for Optometry. They will pay for an Ophthalmologist/MD, but not an OD. It's been over a week now and my bill is still not finalized for my contact lens exam. When you ask for help in filling out paperwork for your vision insurance, everyone just passes the buck to billing and they have no clue what is going on either. I get promises that someone will return my call, including management and no one ever calls. Scheduling is equally as bad as billing. When I was calling in as a new patient, I was set up with an MD and was told he would do they eyeglass exam. He did not, some technician did it. Then when I tried to see up a contact lens exam and eye dilation closer to home, that got all screwed up too. Then I had to book 2 different appointments, one with the OD and one with the MD to make sure my insurance policies would cover the 2 different types of exams. What should have taken me 2 visits took me 3 visits to get everything accomplished. Totally inefficient use of my time and theirs. Support staff needs to be educated on how billing and insurance works for eyecare. It would save A LOT of time in following up with frustrated patients. read more

I have a pair of over $400 sunglasses I'll never be able to wear as the transition in the lenses is way off. Took them back in and they told me they were fine. They are not fine. I found a new eye-care group and my new glasses are perfect. The Staff at Pacific Eye is friendly but the technical aspect has a lot to be desired. They should have fixed my lense issue. I was on vacation in CA, from MD, and developed a serious eye condition. The practice graciously took me as an emergency patient. Dr Oldenburg was kind, thorough, answered all of my questions, and explained things well. Over the weekend, I had to call the practice and Dr Sherman, the doctor on call, graciously and promptly returned my call and resolved my issue. The office staff promptly sent summary reports to my doctors in MD. I would highly recommend this practice. read more

Called and asked to make an appointment for a chalazion extraction (have a chronic hx of). Had the appointment and was told I could not get it done in this visit but would have to make another appointment. So needless to say I had to pay for an appointment where my needs were not addressed wasting my time and money. Very disappointed. read more

I have been going here a number of years ever since Dr. Horne left SLO Eye Associates. He does a great job; however the general customer service and office policies at this location is terrible. They seem to take a 2 hour lunch. Fine...but you cannot leave a message during this time. So you call before or after...that's also a no go. No one will answer the phone. Ever. You get their "call center" and if you're lucky, you might get a call back many hours later. Need a copy of your prescription? Better not have a job because you can only pick it up in person. Need an accurate prescription? Look elsewhere...tried getting my contacts refilled and the company keeps saying my prescription is expired even though I just got it a few months ago. I called, which of course they don't answer, wait several hours, finally call me back only to assure me that it's not. When I finally get a copy of it (by snail mail)...the dates are in fact...expired. Now I'm out of contacts and what happens when I call?? You guessed it...no one answers! Dr. Horne is great, otherwise I'd go elsewhere but be warned...this business is not for those who needs things quickly and accurately. read more

I was very impressed with the professionalism and caring demeanor of the Technician (Rhett) and Ophthalmologist (Dr. Horne) during my appointment at Pacific Eye in Paso Robles. I had been experiencing partial loss of vision on occasion. The occurrences were infrequent and only lasted for a short duration but it was causing me a great deal of concern. During a recent visit to my optometrist (Not affiliated with Pacific Eye) I was told that I had damage to the back of my eye that might just be normal aging or it could be the onset of Macular Degeneration. This was what prompted me to seek out an Ophthalmologist. The Technician and Ophthalmologist at Pacific Eye diagnosed my issue as "Ocular Migraines" and told me that if they happen again that I should just lay back in a chair with my eyes closed and the effects will pass in a short period of time. They also gave me a list of possible causes and suggested that I write down anything from the list that may be a trigger for my migraines so that I can minimize future occurrences. Dr. Horne also told me that my eyes looked healthy and that there were no current or active issues in my eyes but there was some scaring from a prior infection in my eye from Histoplasmosis. That is what he suspects my optometrist was referring to. I had my cataract surgeries done at Pacific Eye. The staff were courteous and kind, very patient with my many questions. My surgeon Dr. Brett Oldenburg was wonderful. He listened to all my concerns and suggested an approach that would balance my near and far vision. He felt the lens that were covered by Medicare were just fine for me so there was very little personal cost. The surgeries and follow up went smoothly and my vision is so much better. The clarity is so improved and the balance procedure with the lenses worked like a charm and just gets better as time goes on. Having had two cataract surgeries, an aneurysm repair, and a lens replacement I have no problem with the doctors. However, staff communication is poor. You call them & they promise a return call but don't. Even had an emergency call in & got no return call. Called to make an appointment time change and was hung up on. After having an eye exam with our medical insurance, we were told it would be $50 to have our prescription for glasses. we were told insurance wouldn't cover this charge. I order to get the new glass prescription that we needed, we were forced to pay this. This was not disclosed up front. We won't be going back there. They lost 2 patients today. read more

I have always felt as if I was in good hands at Pacific Eye, Dr. Hulburd has been my eye Dr. for almost 9 years, I trust his judgment and I adore his kind disposition. I had Lasik surgery also by Dr. Oldenburg, again just wonderful results.. Recently I had to have a preventative glaucoma surgery performed by Dr. Oldenburg and again positive results. " Positive" is the operative word in my review.. Dr. Oldenburg is layed back, calm and confidant which is what you want when it comes to your vision, no room for mistake....... The staff and assistants are over the top!, all of the women in the office are positive, upbeat and friendly.. If you live on the Central Coast I would highly recommend Pacific Eye. read more

I picked out some sunglasses with Salvador O. today in the optometry department of the office. Salvador was a patient and knowledgeable person. He took a long time with me and picked out several frames that looked nice and explained their differences. I never felt rushed and I respected his opinion and knowledge of each lens and frame. I have been coming here for a few years. The staff for the most part are friendly. However, I have NEVER been seen within an hour to an hour and a half of my appointment time. They overschedule and the waiting area is always packed. I can understand if it happened occasionally, but literally every time has been this way. I will be checking my insurance to see if I can go somewhere else and hopefully find an office that has enough staff to see the patients they schedule in a timely matter. read more

The staff is friendly and nice. Making appointment easy. Not a long wait. Here's the thing - my exam had to be done twice because they made a mistake the first time. My 1st pair of glasses had to be remade twice because the lines were in wrong place. My 2nd pair had a twisted frame that they sent in for repair/replace twice and never got quite right. So I just moved to Paso Robles & I noticed my eyes have gotten a bit worse. So I asked my dad for his eye dr & I made an appointment. The staff at the office are very polite and have smiling faces. During my eye exam the optometry technician was nice & I have never experienced an exam like that before. I seen Dr. Chowins & he was great during my exam. He was thorough with my exam and made sure I was comfortable with my exam and made sure I didn't have any questions or concerns before my exam was over.
