Great spot for me and my kid to swim. The lifeguards are all paying attention and I feel safe. The only thing wrong is that if you are not a resudent of Glendale - YOU WILL NEVER BE ABLE TO SIGN UP FOR SWIM LESSONS. Glendale residents get priority for 1 hour every sign up period and it will always get completely filled up. Great place to swim again, but you can't get your kid swim lessons u less you live in and register as a resident.

I paid a dollar to get in (50+), and found the staff to be courteous and friendly. You are given a ticket and then it is collected by the changing room attendant (you enter the pool via the changing rooms). There are no lockers, but the attendant can store your bag while you swim. Plenty of shower and toilet stalls, pretty clean, basic facilities. Most of the pool lanes were being used for youth water polo, and there was one lap swimming lane set up. The 3 ft area on either side of the deeper parts of the pool (the middle of the pool gets to 11 ft) were open swim so I just stayed close to the lap swim lane and had no trouble getting my workout in. I was the only one left doing laps after 630pm. I will be back, I appreciate not having to swim around other people and/or share a lane, we will see if that changes when summer comes around.

The tarp over the slide looks like a typhoon hit it(dirty and ripped apart). Why tempt us? It's false advertising also. And there's a reason why they don't have pictures of the changing rooms. So dirty :( . Back before Covid when people actually worked(and wanted to work) the changing rooms were hosed down regularly throughout the day and clean. Now the attendants are on their phones the whole time instead of working. They clearly do not care about the people of this community and neighborhood when it comes to swimming and having a place to hang out in the Summer. I wanted to call the Health Dept. so many times but then I was afraid that they would shut it down permanently, other people that don't care about the filth might suffer and I wouldn't even have a place to lay out. Really sad how fast the place went downhill.

I was on the lookout…read morefor local community pools and went to check out Verdugo at Mary Alvord Recreation Center. Like most community pools, it's in a beautiful neighborhood of Burbank and has some playgrounds and tennis courts near the pool. The locker rooms are kept up really well and the pool's temperature is kept at just the right level of cold and the chlorine level doesn't feel drastic as some places. The staff are great and helpful. The day rate depends on if you live in Burbank or not ($6-8) for lap swim and keep their schedule updated on their website. Bring your own swim gear as they are not provided by the aquatic center! Depending on time of day and when you go, the lap swim can be metered or by yards, as the layout of the pool can change (with kids swim, open swim, aerobics) nearby. Theres also a nice outdoor area for family events or kids birthday parties. Theres street side parking and they have a good size parking lot but it's pretty busy on weekends; people leave frequently and usually are waiting for your parking spot when you head out! A local who has been coming here for years encouraged me to try Mccambridge Recreation Pool (which I have yet to)!

The area is fairly spacious, and there's a pool you can jump into if the playground gets old. The downside, though, is the time limit they impose. They have two playtime slots: usually from 11:30 to 1:00 and 1:30 to 3:00. That's only an hour and a half of playtime, which my kids absolutely hate. Every time their playtime is interrupted, it leaves a bad impression. They enjoy the place, but once they have to leave due to the time limit, I hear about it nonstop. I personally prefer the Santa Clarita Aquatic Center. It offers unlimited play from open to close, but they do a quick equipment check every hour, which is understandable. It only takes about 15 minutes, and once that's done, you can go right back in. Here, you have to leave and buy a new wristband, about $3 per kid to return, meaning you're paying double if you want to stay longer than 90 minutes. This is definitely something they should reconsider, as I'm sure many people aren't happy with this setup.

However, now…read morecoming out on the other side of things, I am so impressed with the space, capacity, and cleanliness of the Glendale YMCA. First of all, it goes without saying this is an older Y. The building itself has probably seen better days, but the condition of the courts, workout equipment, and weights are all great and just what you need to get a workout in. I primarily use the treads and free weights, and have never had an issue waiting for others at 7pm on a weekday. I also want to commend the staff member who showed us around the facilities for the first time. He was helpful and seemed genuinely interested in getting us on board as members. In Glendale you either get boutique fitness classes or overpriced muscle gyms. If you are looking for a reliable, affordable option, I can't recommend the Glendale Y enough. I'm not sure what capacity was like pre-pandemic days, but since we've started going last week it has always been populated but not crowded. Masks are also not required but it's quite easy to space out because - well - there's a ton of space in every room!

Not a big deal on its own, but it showed a lack of attention to detail. My son doesn't speak English yet, so I was happy the coach tried some Armenian words to help. About 10 minutes into class, a lifeguard told me parents are not allowed inside the pool area and made me stand outside behind the glass. Since it was his first day, my son didn't yet know the rules and thought it was a regular pool. He got out of the water and started walking/running around the other side of the pool. With only one coach for 8 kids, there was no immediate supervision. A staff member named Nicole rolled her eyes at me and told me I "need to watch" my son -- even though they had just told me to step outside. Very unprofessional attitude. When I spoke to the swimming program manager afterward, instead of addressing the safety issue, he told me I should put my son in private lessons. He's only 3! If kids that age need one-on-one attention, then why does the YMCA advertise group lessons starting from age 3? My son goes to preschool and is well-behaved, but like any child, he needs support in a brand-new environment. The staff here clearly aren't trained to work with very young children, and instead of showing patience, they try to push parents into paying for more expensive private classes. I do not recommend Glendale YMCA swimming classes for toddlers. The safety and professionalism just aren't there.

Most…read moreof the pool is reserved for swim team training in the center deep section during open hours, and for families with children on one of the shallow ends. The shallow end that is closest to tree shade is reserved for a mix of open classes and "lap swimmers". Since you are going across the pool it's less than 25 yards. In terms of depth, remember this is a shallow end of the pool so there's a limited strip which is greater than 6 feet deep. During the summer I took up lap swimming alongside full blown lessons. For a lot of the instruction, adult/children learners were hanging off the side doing drills so it was still manageble to find straight lines for swimming laps. The problem with the pool is it is not that clean. Murky-ish water and hair multiple times came up. There is no rule about swimming caps. The lifeguards feel the need to come wash their feet in the pool just as we are swimming there. The optics and the feeling of being in someone's bathwater are gross. As well I don't enjoy the shallow end for swimming. The best part of this pool is its location near trees and the cubicles for individual changing with benches and a hook. As well, I made some friends among the regular learners who came every day to put in practice time. I enjoyed my swim friends. Now that school is back in session, City of LA Parks and Rec have shut down the pool entirely to the public. It's a shame because if they were to keep it open at the weekends to the public, it would be a source of heat relief for regular families during LA'S hottest months of the year, September and October. Really LA City Parks and Rec could be cognizant of low and middle class people who don't have private pools and rely on municipal pools like this one to stay cool during these life-threatening brutal heatwaves.
