It's been a tough year for businesses whose primary activities were all indoors. However, now coming out on the other side of things, I am so impressed with the space, capacity, and cleanliness of the Glendale YMCA. First of all, it goes without saying this is an older Y. The building itself has probably seen better days, but the condition of the courts, workout equipment, and weights are all great and just what you need to get a workout in. I primarily use the treads and free weights, and have never had an issue waiting for others at 7pm on a weekday. I also want to commend the staff member who showed us around the facilities for the first time. He was helpful and seemed genuinely interested in getting us on board as members. In Glendale you either get boutique fitness classes or overpriced muscle gyms. If you are looking for a reliable, affordable option, I can't recommend the Glendale Y enough. I'm not sure what capacity was like pre-pandemic days, but since we've started going last week it has always been populated but not crowded. Masks are also not required but it's quite easy to space out because - well - there's a ton of space in every room! read more

Based on my personal experience, not just once but twice, this place has had some of the worst staff I've ever seen. They are unable to properly handle or resolve even basic issues when problems come up. Unfortunately, there seems to be almost no real supervision or management in the gym at all, and there are absolutely no proper standards for maintaining the environment. The staff do not appear trained to deal with conflicts or unexpected situations, and when problems happen, they seem completely unable to resolve them properly. Honestly, this has been one of the worst gym experiences I've had. The environment feels chaotic, unprofessional, and poorly managed overall. I would absolutely not recommend this place. read more

Today was my 3-year-old son's first group swimming class at Glendale YMCA, and it was a terrible experience. First, they had his last name spelled wrong in the system. Not a big deal on its own, but it showed a lack of attention to detail. My son doesn't speak English yet, so I was happy the coach tried some Armenian words to help. About 10 minutes into class, a lifeguard told me parents are not allowed inside the pool area and made me stand outside behind the glass. Since it was his first day, my son didn't yet know the rules and thought it was a regular pool. He got out of the water and started walking/running around the other side of the pool. With only one coach for 8 kids, there was no immediate supervision. A staff member named Nicole rolled her eyes at me and told me I "need to watch" my son -- even though they had just told me to step outside. Very unprofessional attitude. When I spoke to the swimming program manager afterward, instead of addressing the safety issue, he told me I should put my son in private lessons. He's only 3! If kids that age need one-on-one attention, then why does the YMCA advertise group lessons starting from age 3? My son goes to preschool and is well-behaved, but like any child, he needs support in a brand-new environment. The staff here clearly aren't trained to work with very young children, and instead of showing patience, they try to push parents into paying for more expensive private classes. I do not recommend Glendale YMCA swimming classes for toddlers. The safety and professionalism just aren't there. read more

A member for 2years. The staff is truly helpful in assisting you with your questions. Robbie,who is the manager is truly gifted and will go out of his way to assist you. The main problem with the building is keeping it safe and have everything in working order. Jose, who heads the maintenance of two buildings,has his work cut out for him. The problem with the facility is the COO, who walks around the building like dictator. My perception of him is, he lacks the skills of dealing with people. I just joined a month ago and I love this place. Yes, it's an old facility but clean and well kept. I read some of the reviews depicting it otherwise. The bathrooms and dressing area is very clean. All machines are clean and in working order. Parking is easy, and the staff are very helpful. I go back and forth between Glendale and Santa Monica as I live in Brentwood and I'll keep going to Glendale as it has a great vibe! read more

The biggest YMCA I have ever been to. So many areas to exercise, from a 25 yard indoor pool to various courts and weight rooms. The facilities are quite clean. Trevor at the front desk was extremely friendly and went out of his way to make sure our needs were met and we had a good visit. I highly recommend this YMCA. read more

Nice vibe and I always enjoy seeing families with kids, but I've belonged to several Y's over the years and this is not among the better ones. The facility is outdated, with a strange layout, and in serious need of renovation. When they do renovations, it takes much too long and creates inconveniences. Their weight machines in their 3rd floor cardio room are in need of maintenance (some have had broken components for many weeks). There are no restrooms on the 2nd and 3rd floors, where much of the activity takes place, which is inconvenient. Frankly, this place needs to embark on a big capital fundraising campaign. read more

AWFUL customer service. Camp sign up day (the only way to enroll your child) and the whole system crashes. Friends who were excited to attend together now cannot, due to the abysmal system AND management. The only way to get help is to email, but NO ONE responds to your email. When you call, you are told no one is there to answer your questions and you have to email. Again, NO ONE responds. How can an organization that claims to support its community have such lack of concern for people??? I will never put my child through this kind of disappointment again. There are other summer camps that will actually have a human touch and concern for the children; those are the camps that will get my money. read more

YMCA hmmmmm good and bad reviews. I took my daughter her for her swim lessons and I request a female. But 2 of her lessons were with a male. In which they did NOT tell me ahead of time. Just to give me info and if I would rather change the lesson day to another. The swim teachers are great. I really like one her name was Evadai (sp?). She was patient with my daughter from where I could see. And my lil girl just wants to play. The director Norberto well good and not so good. Great he fixed a few problems with the lessons but not good in calling the customers in change of instructors. OH well it is what it is.. I personally would recommend the YMCA for swimming it's actually not bad at the end. Just a little adjustment with the schedules of instructors. I would have Evadai/Emily to train your kid/kids. As many others have described, really rude people at the front desk, especially the older woman with red hair. I went in to swim today. She looked at me for a minute, and smiled. This was the first time I had ever seen her smile, btw. She smiled and said "The pool is closed until Jan. 6." It was just mean! She seemed happy I wouldn't be able to swim. That is the last straw! She never greets you, won't make eye contact, just talks with coworkers or watches something on her phone. Then the one time she deigns to look at me, she is smiling because she's giving me bad news. I love coming here and taking classes. Although I cannot make most of them because they start early. I very much enjoy cycling with Linette on Tuesdays. She has so much energy and has the best music. I LOVE the YMCA of Glendale. As a longtime exercise enthusiast and Los Angeleno, I have tried out many, many gyms in the city. The Glendale YMCA is my favorite and having access to all of the YMCA's throughout the city and country make it an INCREDIBLE deal. Sure....the YMCA Glendale needs a fair amount of repair and there are a few spots that are a bit unpolished BUT... it is HUGE. TONS of equipment, TONS of private workout areas, TONS of machines, treadmills, bikes, stairclimbers, ellipticals. Tons of space to get your workout on. They DO NOT build gyms like this any more! It pains me to see that cheap, corporate gyms are dominating the landscape and providing hugely overcrowded, unsafe, and unsanitary gyms, when there are great places like the YMCA who use the funding to give back to the community. 10/10 read more

As I asked to the front desk guy after taking shower and finding pool door closed in the middle of the day ( guys I believe you do everything to lose your customers, why do you set that unusual breaks on YMCA schedule ?). Beware of the swim program. Took our son in for his first lesson at this Y today to be closer to his after school program. Doesn't compare to our other Y in La Crescenta. One instructor with 25 kids, no personal interaction just yelling drills, berated several young children during the hour, and our 8-year old didn't escape the berating as he was told by the coach that he "had the worst crawl ever seen ". Good job. Real way to empower a kid and encourage them to strive for more. They should be ashamed of themselves for having bitter, unfriendly staff coaching way too many kids. Not familiar with the rest of the programs at this location but this Y certainly doesn't live up to the Ys core values and mission through its swim program. Vending machines never work, Apple Pay and the 3rd Party app the vending machine wants you to preload money (kind of shady to me instead of straight Apple Pay). I have had the Monyx app charge me for something that was sold out and last week the Gatorade I was able to buy was frozen solid. Love coming to work out during COVID with a three month kiddo at home with unmasked preteens kids just running around unsupervised and also not being able to buy a drink. Cancel your contract with the vendor, Anacapa Vending, because they are not providing the service they say they are. I included a picture of the one in the basement. The one on the second floor failed five times in a row with both Apple Pay and the Monyx app with four bars of 5G cell service (basement only gets 1 bar of cell device and the Wi-Fi is awful). read more

I have been a member for 5 months now and visit 4-5 times a week. My daughter is 2 and plays in the children's area while I workout! It is such a relief to do something so good for my body and mind! The gym smells and looks clean, and staff always say hello and are welcoming. The children's gymnastics on Mon and Weds mornings is run by an amazing instructor who loves the kids and gives them just the right amount of freedom to keep them interested for the full hour--and this is included w membership-no extra fee! There is a full class schedule of events w plenty to offer all age and fitness levels. I cannot stress how nice the child watch area is--the staff are s so kind and sweet and I feel they really enjoy their time w kids. My wishlist-- An after 8 am morning spin class, a morning yoga class, and more hours for open swim so I can take my daughter other than Sundays! read more

The Y is doing a great job of maintaining safety precautions under the current circumstances. They take your temp when you arrive and they require masks and gloves while exercising. Plenty of disinfectant spray and paper towels available to keep the equipment clean. I will definitely continue to go there. read more

I would give it a 5 star but this review is ONLY for their front desk staff who have the responsibility to represent the facility they're working at and make experience of members really good or disappointing by the service they provide! They are trying to automate things (which is good) but apparently their software has a serious bug and it's not quite working out for them. The worst part is instead of acknowledging a technical flaw at their end they choose to place the blame on members. Long story short - their auto-payment system failed to charge me for a month and my credit card statement does not show any payment decline which indicates the attempt was never made. My membership card stopped working and I could not scan it anymore to get in the parking lot. I approached them with this issue & asked them to check if there's some payment issue or issue with the membership card. They were TOTALLY unaware of this until I spoke to them. They told me they apparently did not charge and REFUSED to take payment same day since they were wrapping up for the day!! I had been swiping that card at facility entrance everyday, right in front of them and their system still did not show that a payment was due on this card !! I went again on Saturday (since I got busy with work rest of the week, Saturday was my next visit at the center). So this absolutely ARROGANT LADY at front desk (will find out her name soon & update) tells me that she'll be charging me an EXTRA FEE of $10 since it was not "their" fault that the payment did not go through (?!?!?!) She gave me silly reasons why my payment didn't go through and I had answers to all of those & in the end when she had nothing else to say to make me look bad, with an air of superiority she tells me - ok this time I won't charge you but "IF THIS HAPPENS AGAIN" you'll have to pay the fee !!!!!!! Her silly logic for payment decline - 1)You didn't have enough money on your card. I said it's a credit card 2)She says - Oh you must not have cleared payments and hit your limit. I said I would know better about this, my payments are done on time & if m able to make larger payments with that card I highly doubt it would decline a minor $30 payment. 3)May be because you used a different card for first payment and today you're using another one!! I have no words to answer this question to a person who's dumb enough to give this logic Anyway, my credit card shows no declined payment, nor was I notified by YMCA ! When I told her I wasn't notified, how was I supposed to know, what's the point of having automated system if it can't detect a failed attempt & send immediate notification to people - she said we sent you a mail (PLAIN LIE that i caught right away) I told her I did not get any. So she changed her stance and said oh we're just getting the mail ready and it will reach you in some time. Are you kidding me ??? How far can a person go to justify their fault and end up looking absolutely silly !!!! I will find out her name & update this review, and there was one more guy, but he did not go out of his way like this woman to act rude so I'm not quite upset with him. But this woman really needs some serious etiquette class ! YMCA of Glendale - YOU CAN HIRE MORE MATURE/REFINED PEOPLE THAN THAT ! Remember - they represent you ! I just started going here, but I think it's a great deal! I haven't checked out the pool yet as I used to be going to Echo Park public pool so I have something to compare. The staff has always been very friendly to me, but I try to talk to the same lady that I know has always been nice. Not sure what everyone else finds so bad about this place. So far no complaints. Nonetheless the weight room facility is very clean and has more equipment than the other ymcas in the Los Angeles area. The service is atrocious and don't get me started on parking. So many problems with this gym. They use Covid as an excuse for a lot of things. They are extremely understaffed and that's dangerous. There is no one upstairs making sure that no kids are in the weight room throwing things around carelessly. The cable machine has been broken for 11 months. It was "expected" to be fixed January 2022... No progress. The ceiling is falling apart in both rooms??? & they are not putting any money/effort into fixing these issues. Such a small crappy gym. G A R B A G E Repeat after me! YMCA Is GARBAGE WOOOOOOO So I'm 18+ and o boi. The rates at "the Y" = the older you are the more expensive your monthly is. Though when I went to the 18+ locker room, O MY EYES. Broken cramped lockers, Broken seats, WET FLOORS. Then I went to the showers and THERE ARE NO Fing CURTAINS.... There is only one type of liquid machine in the showers (idk what it is) when I asked if it was body wash or shampoo I was told it was all of it. Continuing, the whole shower room consisted with 2 machines and there rest were GUESS what BROKEN WOOOO. Now, on to the steam room!! Garbage was all over the seats, I'm talking the works. Gum, mystery soaked paper towel, and the beautiful empty trash water bottle. I'm being really honest, these guys make allot of money off people who are 18+... why can't you take care of your stuff. I'm the type of guy that comes to work out, and wants to just chill in the steam room after shower with cold water and go home to rest. Where is your money going? Like, is it so hard to get curtains from 99 cents to give people just an ounce of privacy at least. Ugh, if your like me and want to just workout. The only thing here is expensive garbage. read more

I grew up using the YMCA in tujunga/la crescenta, and I have such mixed feelings about this location as an adult. I love the bountiful parking lot, super convenient. They keep the front area fairly tidy, as well as the more obviously noticed rooms that are on the main floor; they're currently repainting the ball courts. But I'm not a fan of how the most essential and most vunerable facilities are not kept up to par. At all. The locker rooms (especially upstairs female lockers), I get it. Lockers age. Lots of water, chlorine, and general usage etc make them deteriorate. That's why there's rust primer and oil based paints to maintain that stuff. The steam room is also another can of worms. There is marks/damage to the tiles, and the cage light is PEELING with paint or something. The vents look like they get cleaned maybe twice a year. The room itself does get disinfected with a diluted spray of some sort of chemicals daily. Overall it looks aged, and questionable. From what I was told it gets "redone" every 6 months or so. There is also a section that is a seated jacuzzi, which is inoperable and has been for what seems like the past 5 years (from a paper that was next to it). The shower section kinda smells? The shower heads are all different, old and look unmaintained; plumber's tape very poorly sealing (still leaking) pipes. 1-2 showers inoperable. Tiles on the floor coming up, the vents look cruddy and gunky. The all-in-one soap isn't something natural, nor hypoallergenic, nor helps remove chlorine. Just know it's coconut scented. Just one of these features from a communal soap would be nice. One of the bathroom stalls is closed up with caution tape, has been for a while. Lastly, I'm really not wild about seeing a singular female employee in the afternoon/evening wearing two wrist braces and having full responsibility of caring for what seems like EVERYTHING having to do with janitorial work. Trash, mopping, dusting, disinfecting, laundry, caring for bathrooms + lockerroom + showers + steam/sauna, etc. I hope she gets paid a bit more than the front desk, who have anywhere from 2-5 employees having a seemingly relaxed existence. read more

A lot of cool people frequenting this gym, and It's a nice little community of regulars you end up seeing in whatever activity or sport you make use of. The weight rooms were really clean, especially compared to places like 24, and not too many cats hanging around; Never too crowded. Not too much of a fan of some of the staff in front. I always feel an uneasy tension with a lot of them, and I feel like they do things too much by the book. In a place like YMCA, which seems to try to market a community-centric vibe, there are some things that need to be understood between one man to another. The bottom floor is very chill, with old people and regulars playing pool and ping-pong. End up seeing a lot of kids at some times in the day, atleast in the first floor and at the basketball courts, not really in the weight rooms though, just something to note. Good place to chill if you just want to hang out too. However, there is a strange scent of steamed broccoli permeating through the bottom and ground floor at any given time. All in all, I like the YMCA, just wish the blonde chick would stop looking at me funny. That other chick is cool. The one with black hair and kind of drooped eyes. She's kind of mystical and we always end up staring at each other in a metaphysically psychological way which nestles through my unconcious mind. I too tried to sign my daughter up for camp. I logged on at 11:58am, ready for registration at 12pm. Immediately, the entire system crashed - again and again. At 12:45pm, I was FINALLY able to "check out" - although that system crashed too. My credit card cleared at 1:08pm, and I received a confirmation. My daughter and her friends were thrilled - only to be disappointed a few days later when we received an email that she was on the WAITLIST - in the 80s! The clueless kid on the phone said "the camp director doesn't have a phone" (what?!) he didn't even know their name. Just said to "email" to a general email address. Knowing I would NEVER receive a repsonse, I also emailed the CEO and found the Camp Director. She apologized, said demand exceeds the number of spaces and there's nothing she can do. *** IT at Glendale YMCA, there HAS to be a better way to register a child for camp without being completly disappointed and have an anxiety attack. Now, she's left with a hole in her summer plans... and her heart. Friends who were miraclously able to register will have an amazing time at Camp Fox...without her. Next time, I'll just pay for CIMI or Pali Camp, rather than go through this traumatic experience again that caused all of us to have camp registration PTSD. STAFF: The most messiest staff at this ymca. They are rude and have a long way to go to meet basic customer service standards. There's no etiquette whatsoever. You basically have to scoop the words out of the front desk people's mouth. After walking in , you are the one who greets them not the other way around. The staff will literally get up to talk to another worker about their Starbucks order and leave you in the middle of your process without saying excuse me .... Ugh!!! What a nightmare ! Such barbarians! SUMMER CAMP: For all you who have kids , (my kids have attended summer camp here for about 3 years now) if you want your kids getting screamed at go ahead and drop them off (as I witnessed an idiot staff member screaming at the little ones as I walked in to pick up my child. This is not summer camp .... More like BOOT CAMP !!!! They have a bunch of teenagers (with no patience and no professionalism or experience to talk or be with kids) Minah needs to get off her behind and be more involved and realize that she has garbage teenagers handling those poor kids. My child will NO LONGER attend this location, not after my child told me she had a terrible day while being at the Y, not to say she was getting bullied by older kids! I've been to several other Y's and I've got to say that this why far surpasses all other Y's. Please understand that I only use the Y for the pool, but from the looks of the other facilities it's still up there in kudos. The work out room is huge, I mean compared to other Y's it's ginormous and nicely spaced out. You're not working out on top of each other. There are two b-ball courts... I think? Or one court and the other is a vball court? Regardless they are right next to each other across the way from the women's locker room and they always look pristine. There are 2-3 racquet ball courts and a cycle room (I've been dying to take a class, but my schedule prohibits me from it at this point). Now, what I think to be the pride and joy of this Y compared to others. The two locker rooms and the pool. The pool is amazing, never so full as to have more than 3 people per lane. It appears that lap swim is open all day along side various classes the Y provides. There at LEAST 3 lanes open for lap swimmers like me. It's kept so clean it makes me want to cry, the water is so clear that when I got in the pool at the Alhambra Y I was in disbelief how cloudy pools could get. Seriously, gross. The downstairs locker room is always clean with ample room to shower, and they always have soap! Oh and they have towels if you need or if your membership includes it!!!!! Upstairs locker room is full of wonderful things, a few work out equipment, wet and dry sauna, jacuzzi, massage room (I knnnoowww wtf right?), clean shower, oh and my favorite amenity - the suit dryer, basically spins the crap out of your suit to get it nice and dry. I've never understood how spoiled I've been at the Glendale Y until I went to other Y's. And lemme tell you..... I'm staying at the Glendale Y until I have to move. I don't care how far I have to drive. And serious props go out to whoever keeps this whole place so darn clean.
