This is my favorite coffee shop in the area, and I know my coffee, I'm a Barista. From the moment you walk in the door, the atmosphere is wonderful, any free Barista greets you promptly and very friendly. It is often busy, but they never rush you. And their quality is fantastic! You can either get it "for here" or "to go" and the prior is served to you in ceramic/ glass mug with metal cutlery. Their prices are standard, but, again, their quality is excellent, very worth the price! They have plugs to charge your phone/ laptop, wonderful pastries, and a an added bonus, they have gelato!! I come here about twice a week to work. The bagels are great, the lattes are delicious, the desserts are good, etc. I appreciate that the menu is simple enough while still providing a nice selection. The vibe is a little more chill than other places I go to - no loud music, nice lighting, round cafe tables. I love the outdoor seating area! However, this is the second establishment i've been at in the Santa Cruz area where i've seen a non-service dog brought into the shop by a customer, a staff person pets the dog and then they handle food. I have never had a bad cup of coffee here. This place is probably my all-time favorite coffee shop. I would love coming down here in between classes at Cabrillo, and I've been going through withdrawals since I moved to SJ. My cup of choice is the Cafe Amaretto. I love the almond flavoring and their lattes are never overly sweet. The coffee here is great and always shines through in their drinks. The breakfast food is also pretty good here. They have a case full of coffee cakes, muffins, and you can order a really good bagel, egg and cheese sandwich. After our stay at New Brighton State Beach, we wanted a short coffee break before our drive back to San Francisco. Pacific Coffee Roasting Company & Cafe is a nice and unassuming cafe. They have a wall of coffee beans, and a coffee roaster sitting in the cafe, with some (probably decorative) burlap coffee bean sacks along the window. Other than that it looks like a standard strip mall coffee shop. There were a few other customers at 8:00am, and not a long wait for our coffee drinks. I had a cappuccino, which was good. Next time, I'd probably try their other fun drinks, like the vanilla latte. We also had a muffin, which was fresh from the oven, but pretty standard and a bit oily. read more

My favorite coffee shop. I go here everyday. The very best part isn't the coffee or food etc, its the actual employees. (Although the coffee/tea/food is killer) Seeing the same smiling faces behind the counter consistently makes such a nice positive experience. I cant stand when an establishment has a revolving door of people who never know your name or remember your order. The employees here are what make this coffee shop special. I was drawn in by the pup in the photo because I had my little one with me. I had the 'special' Nutella latte, which was DELICIOUS, albeit weak. My mom had the mexican chocolate latte, which was good, but not great. We shared a cranberry scone, which the gentleman inside was kind enough to toast for us, then bring it outside to our table. When he came out, he checked to see how our drinks were, especially since he had never made the nutella latte before. What service! I think what would make the espresso drinks off the charts would be if they brewed it a bit stronger. They barely tasted like coffee.. so although it was a decadent treat for a special occasion, it would not be somewhere I would go everyday if I lived in the area. The people who work here are super nice, especially the lady who helps me pick out my beans. I just wish they were open a little later and had more convenient bike parking. Being Aptos, I'm probably the only person who cares about this. The cappuccinos are really frothy if you like that. The coffee selection for drip is variable and diverse and very good. There are 8 coffee places within about a 2 mile radius in Aptos. Most of them are good, but Pacific Coffee Roasting Company is the BEST. Their brewed coffee is excellent and my favorite is non-fat latte, which doesn't even taste like it's non-fat. They also make many of their own bakery items. The carrot muffin is yummy. I've never tried the cinnamon rolls, but they look really good too. If you are trying to stay with a healthy breakfast the steel cut oatmeal is great and they also have yogurt and fresh fruit. The other thing I have noticed about Pacific Coffee Roasting Company is the staff is super friendly and nice...and they seem to keep their baristas for a long time, which translates to a happy work environment. I really wanted to like this place, as I heard good things about it from regulars at my coffeeshop. But the four times I've been in there the quality of microfoam is mediocre at best. I watched the barista hold back the foam until the very end of the drink, at which point they scoop it onto the top. As a barista myself this action hurts. The point of frothing milk is to create a silky, homogenized mixture to pair perfectly with the espresso. I love this place - disclosure I worked at the original Santa Cruz location roughly 100,000 years ago back in the 80's..... I still *love* the roast on this coffee... We vacation in Aptos a few times a year- and I savor getting hand-dripped cups from here. I also stock up on beans every few months so I can re-create the toasty goodness of a cups of Steve's or and Indian Malabar. I have been here several times to try different drinks. Nice atmosphere - with plenty of parking in a strip mall as well as outdoor seating in this COVID19 time. I have tried the Cafe Latte as well as the Cafe Borgia at different times. While both drinks were okay - I prefer them stronger.
