Rudy showed up for a walk-thru estimate for kitchen backsplash. Not good. We bought extra large format porcelain tiles from Home Depot. He did not like them, and thought they were going to look bad. (Ok I appreciate his opinion). He suggested some smaller cheap tiles. No thank you. He kept saying how he thought it wasn't going to look right. He complained multiple times that it was gonna be hard to do. *** Hard to put large tiles on drywall*** ?? He told us that our brand new countertops had a grout line that was "horrible". Ok, that's his opinion. BUT SAID IT OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN. Quick Tip: Don't trash-talk your potential customer's house. I got the sense he really didn't want to do the job. Just say it. No hard feelings. But I also got the sense that he wanted to redesign our backsplash according to his taste. One day later, he texted me saying, "We don't have a saw that is able to cut the tile." And he passed on the job. 1. Saw blades (diamond) for cutting porcelain are $36 at Home Depot. And how are you in the business but can't cut porcelain tiles?? 2. Your customers have their own tastes. Suggestions about potential issues or problems are welcome. But don't force your aesthetics on the client. 3. Don't denigrate your customers' house, especially when the whole thing was just remodeled. Can't speak about the installation, because he disqualified himself from the job. read more

I recently moved into a house and needed to replace the bathtub (which was old and rusting). Of course, this meant the tile around the tub would need to be redone as well. These guys are great - they came and demo'd the old tile first, making it easier for the plumbers to remove the old tub (see my other reviews for a great local plumber!). He happened to have some awesome bright yellow tile and sold it to me at a discount, so I didn't have to go tile shopping. The whole team is skilled not only in tile setting, but in communication as well. I cannot stress this enough that when you are doing an old style job involving complex patterns, corners and fills, the design on paper doesn't always translate well in real life applications, so little corrections and suggestions will have to be made, just part of the process. Where most fail, however, is when those design corrections aren't spoken about and the workers chug along only to have a bad surprise when the tiles are set. Pacific Tile team doesn't take assumptions, is incredibly good at this and will communicate anything that does not seem right according to their expertise, suggest solutions so that the finished job is exactly how you wanted it, done once done right. As far as tile setting goes, I think pictures speak for themselves. They are masters at old fashioned mudding (using cement as a backing to control the surface to which tiles will be applied), cutting, installing, setting patterns, know their suppliers very well. The work is solid and they stand 100% behind it should an issue arise, it will be corrected. They are also unbelievably clean and tidy and always leave a neat worksite at the end of the day, respect people's homes. And lastly, they are proper tile nerds. Doing a second story build on our home, we are using a General Contractor "GC". I specifically requested him to use our tile guy, Rudy for all tile. Best decision made! Our GC has had a habit of lying to us and screwing up so many parts of our home doing this rebuild. Rudy and his team came in and did the tiling of our master bath and jr master bath. It came out stunning. However, our GC failed to finish a wall after several requests that the tile was going on and he failed to properly center our shower fixtures. So after the tile was installed parts of it needed to be ripped out and re-done so it would look ascetically pleasing. This was done on the GC's dime and the time came out perfect even with the repairs. We love Rudy and his team! Tile Review I cannot say enough about Pacific Coast Tile. Rudy and his team were amazing and did such great work on our flooring. We decided to replace our laminate wood floor with tile. We found some tile we liked and began getting in estimates for tile installers. Rudy was quick to get out and give us an estimate. When he came over, we instantly liked how friendly and animated he was. He was very honest and straight forward about what he does and what is outside of his practice. He was very very knowledgeable and was able to explain the technical side and break it down to what we understood. We showed him the tile we liked and he pointed out that the tile was curved like a banana and would cause lots of breakage and would not last long. Once he pointed this out we could not unsee the bend in the banana tile. He made us promise to get lots of estimates and it didn't matter who we went with as long as we did not use that tile but a better quality. We really liked this and continued with our estimates. We used this tile knowledge to help us test the other companies. Not one was worried about the tile. They even recommended it and were associated with the banana tile company. 10 estimate later, from crazy cheap to expensive. We went with Rudy knowing we were getting top of the line installation. From here Rudy worked around our schedule and on the start date, he was on time and explained the whole process again. I felt more than comfortable leaving him the keys to our house. I'd come every couple of days to check on things. They were so quick and did such an amazing job. They left our house very clean too. I loved the promise that our tile would be so flat and seamless that a hockey puck would glide across it. Well, Rudy brought a puck and we tested it out. Lol. He was right! We had a little too much fun with the puck. Seriously, Rudy and his crew are experts at their trade. They are honest and trustworthy people. I can't rave enough about Pacific Coast Tile Installation! Finding a reputable Tile Installer can be like sitting down at the Roulette Table in Vegas and putting all your money on 13. I have had my fair share of shady contractors that have missed timelines, overcharged me and botched jobs! Luckily we have a friend that had a great experience with Pacific Coast Tile Installation. We got 3 separate estimates and PCTL not only beat the price of the other two, but the timeline was shorter and the tile costs were less. Rudy, the owner, couldn't have been more professional and was very upfront with all the costs. Didn't take us long to figure out who we were going with. Rudy was super accommodating and worked around our schedule. I have never had a contractor actually show up on time and Rudy was there on time every day. I was really looking forward to working with Rudy based on the many positive reviews I saw here on Yelp. It looks as though he does beautiful work and I needed expertise. In our initial conversation, he was very friendly; however, things spiraled in a negative direction that I couldn't have imagined. I would describe Rudy as unprofessional, hot tempered, and verbally assaultive. I've never been talked down to and treated so poorly by anyone in the construction business, and that's after doing a year long remodel where I've worked with various contractors. It began with a miscommunication on our meetup time. Rudy told me he'd arrive on a Sunday but never said when, and did not confirm the day before. I assumed his schedule was full or he would message me later Sunday for a time to begin work. On Sunday, I go in to work part time from 8:00am until 11:30-12:00pm. He arrived at 9:00am and I was not available due to being at work. He called and I since I was working, I was unable to return his call until I was done. Once we touched base, I profusely apologized for my error in not picking up his telephone calls and for the miscommunication. Rather than show any kindness, Rudy barraged me with me with insults, put downs, and called my character into question. His gentlest comment was to describe me as "shady. " He made a point to say he should be "charging me so much more" and this was a "total waste" of his time. I understood his frustration and continued to apologize. We hung up the phone after he told me he had "much better ways to spend time" and he "didn't need my business." Though I was considerably rattled, I was in a very tight spot to get the job done. So, I called him back later in the day, apologized again multiple times and he agreed to complete the work in two days time. The night before, I texted to request the invoice because I had not received it in my email. I sent a screenshot of my search showing it was not in my inbox and he sent one back, showing his wife had sent it. It was a bit confusing why it wasn't there but I figured I'd simply get a print out the next day, no problem. Instead, he phoned me moments later and I picked up only to have him scream at me yet again, hurl more insults, then back out of the job a second time. This, all with 12 hours before the job was set to begin. I got off the phone in tears after being mistreated so badly. As a woman, it was a particularly upsetting experience to be yelled at repeatedly by an older man. Beyond this, the lack of professionalism was truly stunning. I would advise any consumer to be highly cautious of working with Rudy, as one miscommunication could turn into an experience nobody should have to go through. read more
