The first time I was in the UK, my Scottish cohorts told me wild tales of deep fried pizza, deep fried haggis, and deep fried mars bars. I was so excited but never made it up to Scotland. Less than two years later, I got to tour the UK again and ended it by spending an extra week up in Scotland.
This place had the standard fish and chips, but also had a dozen deep fried items. Pizza, candy, haggis, blood sausage, hot dogs, etc! I tried almost all of it and it was all what you'd expect it to be, delicious!
The deep fried pizza was made from the cheapest frozen pizza possible. Battered, fried and served with greasy chips, it's a heart attack in a plastic basket, but so good! I'm pretty sure I even topped it all with salt. But really, the ultimate indulgence was the deep fried haggis. If you know what haggis is made out of, you'll know just that can be pretty rank. Deep frying it just makes it even better.
It's no secret why Scotland is such an unhealthy populous, but at least they've got some great fried foods! read more
