This review is unfortunately a little late but I wanted to get it in. This was my first time to the Ozark Cafe in Jasper, Arkansas. Jasper is a quaint tourist town and this restaurant fits right in as an excellent place to get a great meal while you're exploring the town and surrounding areas. I was there with my wife and good friends after hiking all day. I, unfortunately, can't remember what my wife and friends had to eat, but I know that they were well pleased with their meals. I had the fried catfish plate with their fresh cut fries. Everything was served quickly and hot. Our server was busy but made sure we were taken care of. Good spot to stop after a long day on the river or trail. The food is simple and straightforward, but generally tasty. We loved the milkshake!! Love this restaurant. I stay around Jasper when I go up to hike the Buffalo River, and the food at Ozarks has always been good. Great breakfast, huge portions and affordable. Burger and fried mushrooms at lunch are some of my favorite. This is a no frills, downhome, country restaurant. 100 years of pumping out great food. I came across this place while going through the Ozarks. In a town called Jasper, I found this Jewel. We walked in and were greeted with an enthusiastic hello. It took me a moment to lift my jaw after viewing 100 years of advertising and daily specials. This really was like stepping back I time, right down to a group of old timers chatting around a table over coffee... This diner has 3 sections to choose to sit. Each one as charming BUT different than the other. We say in the middle room where there is a stage and tribute to our Military and a music stage where bands come to play. The menu is a Newspaper giving you the history as well as amazing choices to soothe a travelers pallet. We opted to try the fried mushrooms and the Volcano Burger. The mushrooms came out beautifully browned, very large and had a taste like none I've ever had. The taste tantalized my taste buds as I tried to deconstruct the flavors. These are absolutely the best Mushrooms EVER!!!! The burger is a large party on a bun covered in a Volcanic eruption of cheese. The top bun sits on the side with lettuce, onion and tomato.... it resembled a spaceship of cheese resting on my plate. The cheese had a really nice crunch on the bottom, it had a bit more grease than I'd like and the burger was over cooked ( well done ) and too dry for my liking. The curly fries were just ok..... The sweet tea came in a huge glass and was indeed Very Sweet!!! I couldn't finish it but I'm sure it's a yankee thing UK The bathrooms are updated and spotless which was 5 in my book. This diner is a time capsule rich in the history of the Ozarks and a gem in Newton County. I would love to go back and try more food and finish reading the walls and ceilings. We had a lovely experience and the people, both the Staff and locals, were absolutely charming and inviting!!! Talk about Southern Hospitality!!!!! They need to bottle this and ship it North!! Came here on a weekday lunch time. Busy place! Fast service (until it came time for a check, there was some personnel drama going on). Food was affordable and GOOD! We got the chicken crispers appetizer (4 huge tenders). Then my husband asked if he could get an appetizer of catfish, since we weren't that hungry. He got 3 fillets for $4.99!!! Added a small fry for $2 something. All food fresh, hot and seasoned well. Added a strawberry shake to go as a last minute decision when the server asked if we wanted the check. Classic southern diner; everything with gravy is excellent. My daughter and I hit this place up for dinner after a cold exit from the Buffalo River and had such a good meal that we went back for breakfast the next day. The chicken fried steak was one of the best I've had, tender with a fantastic crispy crust. And of course that gravy. Ma's fried chicken was equally good, a tender boneless breast with its own crispy crust. For breakfast the Ozark special is great. Excellent hash browns, and very good sausage and bacon. The cinnamon roll was wonderful - just barely sweet, with a nice tangy cream cheese frosting. Prices were cheap and the service was fast. read more

Spoiler alert: possible disgusting revelation in this tale. While I am not a foodie, I do appreciate a good restaurant. I had high expectations for multiple meal experiences here during our stay. Yeah, didn't happen. We went for supper. Couldn't find a small table that was clean or unoccupied. We offered to wait, but was told to go ahead and grab one if the big tables. There was a wait for drink orders and then food orders to be taken. We were not the only ones. Overheard talk of disappointing service & presented meals. Food arrived. Hit stuff was hot. Salad was salad. The salad was not accompanied by my requested dressing and when I asked the bearer of the food about it (not the same dude as the waiter) I got no response & literally saw the whites of his eyes before he flew back to the kitchen. Eventually, I managed to get (read: noticeably flag down) our server and he brought 2 packages of raspberry vinagrette (key to the tale). Note disappointment of dressing not made in house; it was Ken's dressing so I did not dispair. This was a $9 salad. Raspberry vinagrette dressing. I got to the last third and there was Ranch dressing on salad and bowl. I couldn't decide whether to vomit, panic, or rush the kitchen. I sent the family out. No sense in them growing old waiting for refills, the check, the server or the second coming of Christ. I eventually got the server back to the table. Explained the situation. He apologized and said he'd get the manager. After this young man spent 10 minutes searching, I watched, he came back. Manager was gone. And he said I would not pay for the salad even if he got in trouble. I thanked him. Couple of things: 1) the young man shouldn't get in trouble for what's going on in the kitchen 2) the entire meal should have been comped with gift certificates offered or kiss up to from the manager to not put this tale out there. 3) I will never know if a)it was a legit mistake with a clean bowl and fresh salad or b)I ended up eating someone's uneaten meal. We arrived and were greeted with a smile! Had a short 15 min wait and sat outside in the rockers watching Jasper visitors drive by. We enjoyed the bacon cheeseburger with fried onions and buffalo chicken strips. The chicken and beef were tender and tasty. The portions were so big we had enough for lunch the next day. I'm impressed. Diner breakfast is something I don't get often, and this place nailed it. The food came out in five minutes, the hashbrowns had to be cooked in bacon fat, and the coffee hit the spot. Been eating at the Ozark Cafe before it became "historic" & well-known to people in the surrounding areas (first visit was 30 yrs ago) since part of my family is from Jasper & Mt. Sherman. At that time, if you walked in & weren't a local, people would almost drop their forks & stare. Came in on a Sunday morning. Even though it was a minute past 10:30 & the lunch buffet was already set up, our server said we could order breakfast (they stop at 10:30) if we placed our order quickly. We did have to wait a little longer than usual for someone to wait on us & the restaurant was not crowded yet. The younger girls who seated us were not friendly & walked around frowning the whole time. Food was good - buttery biscuits & hashbrowns; sausage gravy; the scrambled eggs were blah- more like an omelette consistency. We saw breakfast being served the entire time we were there. I wouldn't say it was special or any better than other places. I couldn't get cell phone service here. Another reviewer could. Our server was friendly & kept our coffee refilled. This is just one of those spots you have to drop by if you're in the Jasper area. We stopped in for breakfast on a chilly November morning and instantly felt as though we had taken a step back in time. The long wooden bar sets the stage and watching gentlemen all around the restaurant drinking coffee and talking about the weather made it even better. Another man walks in and a waitress yells out, "Hey Bob!" It has a special home town feel that you just don't get many places anymore. My husband and I ordered coffee and the breakfast special: 2 eggs, bacon, hashbrowns, biscuits, and white gravy, which can be subbed for chocolate gravy so I did that, obviously! When a restaurant in the south serves chocolate gravy, just order it. Another one of those things that is terribly difficult to find. Our waitress was friendly and our coffee cups never went below half full. The food was absolutely delicious and cooked perfectly! We got to engage in conversations with some of the locals as we sipped on coffee and I couldn't help but sit back and smile. The absolute perfect start to a beautiful fall day. read more

Stopped by here after hearing about the history behind the place and the healthy menu options they have. I found the latter not to e so true. That said, it was lunch time on a Monday and it was not too crowded. We were seated immediately at a large table in the side dining room. The place is huge! I had the buffalo chicken sandwich and it was pretty good. Very saucy, and the patty was actually 2 separate pieces of breaded chicken, but hey, whatever works. It was a decent sandwich, but nothing to write home about. The service was good and wifi here was strong, a plus as catching up was easy after being in the mountains. Her name was Danielle & she was the nicest waitress I think I've ever met. She knew all the locals by name & managed to be personal, take orders, & serve all the tables this morning alone & with a smile! The food was absolutely incredible. I had a cheese omelet with hashbrowns, a biscuit & gravy. I got a flapjack that was as big as the plate it was served on; fluffy, hot, & delicious! My date had a sausage & cheese omelet & toast. Sometimes you come across a place that has been around forever, and its just mediocre; there's no excitement or passion as the same old things are served over and over, and the locals take it because there are no other options. Ozark Cafe is certainly NOT one of those places. Though it has been around forever, and some of its menu items probably haven't changed much during the last century, the locals (and tourists) flock here because the atmosphere is delightful and the food is Great! We were informed that menu items are added regularly, and I got to try a couple of the new items. While I wasn't too thrilled with the interesting flavors in the green chile burger, it was an inventive twist to a classic burger. I was blown away, however, by a pasta dish with marinara sauce which was simply spectacular! This is definitely THE place to eat in Jasper. It also seems to be the place to grab a beer and enjoy some live music. read more

We stopped by for lunch on Saturday; they were busy. Staff was friendly and courteous. But none of the staff seemed to be used to being busy. We were seated faster than expected and greeted by our server. Beverages came quickly, but our meal took forever. When another server finally brought our food, my chicken fried steak tasted over-cooked and the portion was relatively small. My wife got the buffalo burger; it was pretty tasty. We didn't see our server after she took our order until we had to ask someone else for our check. Bottom line: I wouldn't make a trip out here for the food. Tiny little town with two cafes, not a whole lot of choices. I imagine they get a lot of traffic from people who are visiting Horseshoe Canyon Ranch, which is exactly what we were doing. We decided to go into "town" on our off day and tried the cafe. I was glad I packed most of our meals, as I wouldn't want to eat here for four days. The food took a longgg time, refills were hard to come by. Most of our food - especially the burger and melt that we ordered were just warm, and obviously sitting for at least ten minutes before being served. I think they were waiting for the fried stuff - fried mushrooms and chicken tenders to be done before serving us. The patties in the burger and melt were dry, I would never order these here. Mushrooms and chicken were pretty good. Curly fries were not fresh but okay. All in all, I would not recommend, but when you have no choices, you can't be picky. What a treat! Good food and an amazing dessert. I had the catfish dinner with home cut fries, hush puppies, and pinto beans. It was way more catfish than I could have possibly eaten.
