Even on close examination, it looks like the real thing, from the color to the texture to the white lines of fat. An amazing feat of food processing technology. So does it taste like the real thing? I always maintain that people who says that when a vegan says that the vegan cheese/ham/sausage tastes like the real thing, it's just because she has forgotten what the real thing tastes like. Short answer, no, it doesn't taste like the real thing, but it is not unpleasant either. Unlike some cardboard-like vegan, gluten free stuff that is barely palatable. I would order it again, but probably just as plain nigiri. The roll has too much mayo, and the truffle do not add much to taste. Soft shell crab is made by frying rolled up seaweed in tempura batter, which I prefer as it's more natural. They have other more traditional Chinese vegetarian dishes too, if veg sushi is not your thing.

The mango and greens are fine enough, though the wrapper is a bit chewy. Assorted Sashimi - the presentation is a far cry from the photo. In hind sight I shouldn't have ordered the whole assorted platter for almost HK$200. Unllike the real stuff, the different sashimi are really the same stuff with different coloring, so there's not much difference in texture and flavor between tuna or salmon or yellowtail. A smarter way to try them would be to order a few small plates of sushi/sashimi and try something else. Papaya Salad - It's a partially hollowed out small papaya with a mix of cucumber, carrot and other veggies. The flavor is quite good and we enjoy scooping out the papaya flesh which is welll ripen and sweet. A really nice deal at less than $20. Overall, a pretty good choice for vegetarians, especially if going with someone who are meat eaters. There are hits and misses, but with such an extensive menu, there are quite many dishes I am curious to return to try. Also, if you are into saving some money, their menu is 50% off during the afternoon tea hours between lunch and dinner. According to the menu, the chain's early days happened during an economy downturn and the restaurant was able to survive by slashing its prices in half during tea time. Its entrance is a narrow commercial building entrance on Nathan Road, right by Hillwood Road, closer to Jordan than TST. The price of afternoon tea has increased, but at HKD128, still a fair price if no longer a steal. We ordered flavored fresh-squeezed lemonades (or you can choose tea, coffee or soda), and our food arrived on a wooden board: two hamburger sliders, two salmon croissants, bacon wrapped asparagus, mac & cheese, BBQ fries and brownies. All is quite tasty except for the mac & cheese, which I find really bland. Applegreen bills itself as offering Californian cuisine. Think of it as a very thin crust pizza. Quite tasty and large in portion. They also have some more unique items from their varying breakfast menu, such as honey glazed bacon, eggs benedict, or other experimental items.
