The Levitt Shell is one of my favorite places in Memphis. They host free live music throughout the year. Most the seating is lawn. bring tailgating chairs and blankets to drop. You will find food trucks at most events, but most people bring their own food and drinks. Pro-tip: hang out for an hour or two after the show. Most people clear out once the show ends. Try to carpool and be prepared to walk to the venue. The crowds are growing more and more each season. read more

We watched the transformation of the shell from seldom used, blighted music venue to the gem of midtown, and couldn't be happier with the results. We've been attending concerts here for ages, and can now share the experience with our kid. The sound is almost always perfect (occasionally loud for loud's sake to point of distortion), and the lighting is always, always spot-on. The crowds range from not-an-inch-to-spare, to rather barren, depending on the night and popularity (not talent) of the artist. I have two growing-pain type concerns that have detracted from the family friendly nature of this venue. 1 - CHAIRS. What the hell is wrong with sitting on a blanket in the grass? We've become so fat and lazy as a society that getting up and down off the ground has become too laborious for us. Let's relegate chair users to behind the sound booth. 2 - Roping off stage left at the top of the hill. This used to be the area kids would run and play. Now the kids get to run and play in front of the bathrooms, by the road, where their parents can't keep and eye on them. Great. Other than my two complaints, it really is a great venue and the staff does a great job of booking and running the shows. read more

Saw Susto here after their renovation and this place is great! Sound quality is awesome. They have a free concert summer series (donations encouraged) and typically have about 50 concerts a year. Great place to catch an evening concert during the sunset. Bring chairs, coolers, drinks and good vibes! read more

The Shell is definitely a Memphis treasure and my favorite outdoor venue in the city. They have free outdoor concerts for both the fall and summer season. I took the family in June to see Todd Snyder. We packed a cooler with snacks and drinks, took bubbles and balls for the kids and spread out a blanket. It was a great night and oh did I mention free! Yep, the outdoor concerts are free. Saturdays and Tuesdays are great for kids as the have a kids series with various performances, jazz, ballet, salsa- you name it , they make it fun for the kids. I'm looking for the fall schedule to come out so I can mark my calendar and enjoy the cooler weather outdoors at the Shell! read more

You just HAVE to give the Levitt Shell 5 stars. They put on so many free events all throughout the year that they deserve it. I've attended multiple concerts here and the atmosphere is always fun and family friendly, even when the show isn't really targeted at kids. It's just a great gathering place. Last weekend we got to see Eric Hutchinson - an artist I've wanted to see since I was in high school - for FREE. You just can't beat that. The parking can be tricky if you arrive late, but I've never failed to find a spot. Just be prepared to walk a little bit through the grass. read more

Saw The Suffers here and it was great. Not only was it a great concert but the whole area was nice and welcoming. The shell is beautiful with all the different color lights going off. People selling shirts and other little items were nice and cool. I can see how this is a super popular place to go. If I was here more you can bet your butt I would. They have plenty of seating area whether you're on the grass or seats. The acoustics are fantastic! It was easy to hear the music. But it wasn't so crazy that you could hear it miles away. read more

I really love Levitt Shell, and I love the way the community supports it. Save our Shell was a motto for many at one time, and it seems as though it's happening. With summer and fall concert series, the Shell is back in action. The concerts here are so much fun. I love spreading out our blankets, unpacking our cooler and sitting back to listen to some great music. We've taken our kids before and they absolutely love it. My oldest immediately runs to the front of the stage along with every other kid in the park. The best part? These concerts are free, and you can see some really awesome local performers. We didn't make it out too much during the summer due to the stifling hot temperatures but I plan to make up for that this fall. Good times! read more

Free outdoor concerts?! What more could you want! There is so much musical talent in this city and around the region and the fact that the Shell brings it to you absolutely free of charge is simply wonderful. Bring a blanket and a cooler and it's the best kind of picnic. They also offer a free concert film series which is just as fun. Pro tip: get there early if you don't want to park at the other end of the park. It gets busy quick! read more

This is probably one of the best parts of Memphis; free concerts at the Levitt Shell! This facility at Overton Park is absolutely gorgeous and relaxing, and they always bring a great line-up of artists. You can bring lawn chairs, blankets, drinks, food, table, etc etc. You can also bring your dog (outside lawn). They also have good trucks offered in case you didn't bring food or didn't bring enough. The only think I will say is that parking can get hectic, so be prepared for that. Otherwise, great time!!! read more

This is probably my favorite Memphis place to go, and that's saying something as I have a lot of places I love here! The Shell is just so perfect to me. I love the simplicity of sitting outside on a beautiful cool summer evening, listening to some good music while my kids run and dance and play outside. No video games-just pure simple fun. Bring a cooler with your fav snack, beer or wine or eat from the few food trucks they have and it's even better. It also just feels so historic knowing that this was where Elvis first played. I have heard some amazing bands here and all FOR FREE! But please toss some $$ in the collection bucket so we can keep this Memphis gem going! read more

What a wonderful asset for the city of Memphis! The shell has been beautifully restored and is now well maintained. Free concerts in the spring and fall. Dogs are welcome on the outer areas and there's plenty of handicap accessible space. Food trucks are frequently present but you can also bring your own food. Chairs and blankets allowed on the lawn. Free concert series in the spring and fall. The concerts are thur-sun for a six week run. Its a different band every night. R&B one night, singer/songwriter the next, and jazz the next. Sunday night is usually geared toward the children. Great for couples or families. The kids usually congregate at the base of the stage and dance. Trust me the kids are not a problem. I take my lawn chair or blanket with a cooler filled with whatever I want :) The seating area is on a 40degree incline so most places have a nice view of the stage and the sound system is excellent. Free music bring your own food and drink...you really can not find a cheaper or more fun date night. I love going to this venue on a nice night. I have made it out to the shell a few times this year and hate I have not gone more. It is a great way to get together with friends and just sit around catch up and hear some new and sometimes familiar bands. The bad thing is this place is it is getting too popular!! if you want a good spot get there early and lay claim to your area. One downfall is the bathrooms I think they need to add some to the other side of the area this place is getting to busy for what they have now. read more

This is one of my absolute favorite places during the summer in Memphis!! Their free concert series (Thursday-Sunday) is wonderful! There's nothing better than bringing a bottle of wine and relaxing while listening to great music at the park. And there's really not a bad seat on the lawn! Feel free to bring your own beverages and food - or I love to try whatever local food truck is there on any given night. I've never heard a single band there I didn't like, despite the widely varying genres of music. The Shell has been around for quite a while but it's great since it was remodeled too. There are many great free concerts and shows. The acoustics are nice and there are a few decent food trucks and beer tents. The Shell is family friendly. This is a place to see some really great music in a historic venue. For free! Donations are accepted and patrons are encouraged to chip in a little to keep the Shell alive but donations are not required. read more

A very fun little venue near where my wife and I live. You won't see big name acts here, it's mostly small timers and musicians who play for fun. But it's a cool place to bring friends when the weather is nice and just chill out. Just keep in mind that the weather in Memphis is only nice for a couple of months in the spring and fall usually! This is a super cheap, practically free way to spend an evening. Go have a nice dinner and some drinks then go to Levitt Shell to see some acts you've never heard of who love to get the chance to play for people. Without a doubt one of the best concert venues I've ever been to. Throw in a diverse and interesting mix of performers and a healthy dose of FREE, and you have not only one of the brightest gems of Memphis, but one of the best places in the South, period. I have never once gone here and had anything short of an awesome time, and the free show that Lucero played here a couple years ago was one of the best nights of my entire life. Whenever I decide what my plans are going to be for a given night, I always check and see if something's going on at the Shell first. I've seen everything from Ray Wylie Hubbard to fire dancers to the North Mississippi Allstars to the kiddie-band incarnation of the Verve Pipe (remember that "Freshmen" song?) here, and even though that last one was just out of a bizarre curiosity (isn't that song about abortion? Are they going to play it for KIDS?!), I've always enjoyed myself. The Shell is, without a doubt, my single favorite thing about Memphis, and a great example of a community coming together to rescue and preserve a genuine icon so that future generations can enjoy it. As a note, there are usually food trucks here during shows, although the lines can be long if it's a popular act. Just in case you forget your picnic basket. They sold beer at a Hill Country Revue show here a while ago, but that wasn't a free show, and it's the only one I've seen beer for sale at. I've always brought my own beer and I've never had any trouble. read more

I finally went to the Levitt Shell the other night. I had heard about it, but never had made the effort to go. I think it is a great Memphis asset, and one that should be promoted to all Memphians. I think I'm probably late to the party, because the event was very well attended. A friend has bought a sponsorship and invited us to food, drinks, and music while sitting on a terrace at the top of the hill. It was a wonderful evening! The weather was great, and the view of the shell was fantastic. I walked over to see the people on the hillside better and saw it was covered with people sitting in chairs and on blankets and having a great time. I can't imagine a better way to spend a relaxing evening. It had everything - even restrooms. I highly recommend a visit to the free event, and I appreciate all those sponsors who make it possible - especially the Levitt Foundation and local corporations. read more

And all I have to say is, Thank You Mortimer Levitt! Finally something for midtown. Free concerts outdoors with a tremendously diverse musical line-up 4 nights a week. I have been to Levitt Shell several times last season and twice already this season. This venue rivals those in other metropolitan cities. This is truly a community oriented venture. I went to see the Sharon Jones show on 7-9. I was very impressed by the organization and friendliness of all who were working. The venue itself is nice and intimate. The visuals and the sound were great. Although the show ended up being rained out, I would definitely keep this venue in mind when I am in town and check out what may be going on. read more
