We were at Blues Hall on Sunday evening, The Band we saw, the Bluff City Groove, was absolutely phenomenal!!! The lead singer was so good, that we stayed all afternoon... during breaks we went into the larger bar that is connected to Blues Hall. I DON'T understand, why The Bluff City Groove, was not on that larger main stage? The band performing on the larger stage, also, a female lead vocalist, was not Nearly as good as Bluff City Groove! I Hope to see Bluff City Groove, on my next trip to Memphis- and hope they are on the main stage where they belong!!! Blues Hall is cool! read more

If you want to hear some amazing music this is the place to go! I went here with some colleagues after a retreat and we fell in love with the live band that had a singing drummer. Nasty and dirty - band was intentionally way too loud (in my opinion) in order to attract customers - tourists walking up and down Beale Street. Temperature was way too warm - everyone was sweating, all so they could leave the doors open so people would hear the music. Drinks were so bad that we didn't finish our only drink ordered. Our favorite spot during our weekend on Beale. The music was AMAZING!! So much talent and showmanship. We had a blast and met some fun people during the bands breaks. I stopped by here a couple of Saturday's ago with my wife. We were walking up and down Beale St. trying to find a place with live blues music whenever we stumbled upon this place. The cover charge was $5 to get in and whenever we arrived it was easy enough to find a seat at the bar. They had a good selection of beers at the bar for decent prices including some local brews which made me happy. The band the night that we were there was a real blues band and we throughly enjoyed the music. The only thing that I think Mr. Handys could improve on is having more than a single bartender. While it didn't personally affect us I noticed a number of people getting frustrated with the wait times from the hustling and overworked bartender. The bottom line for me is that I would stop by here again in the future. This was my favorite place that my wife and I stopped at on Beale St as the beer selection was good and reasonably priced while the music was awesome too. read more

I visited Memphis for the 1st time in November 2014 & I loved it. I have been all over the planet & Memphis is the best music city I have ever been to. I was blown away by the talent of these local Blues musicians. Most of the venues I saw did cover songs, but they were all played to perfection. Mr. Handy's Blues Hall & Rum Boogie were the 2 standout places in Memphis. The place is small, but has plenty of room to dance. It has great sound. The band is on a small stage up front, which gives the place a more intimate feel. Mr. Handy's had a Bluesy vibe. The drinks were modestly priced & everyone was having a good time. The singer even came out to the dance floor a few times to dance with some of the ladies in the crowd. I loved this place. I highly recommend checking it out, if you are in Memphis. Rum Boogie is good too. It is right next door. read more

OMG!!!!!OMG!!!!! The best party on Beale St. the band was spectacular, we came early(8ish) to beat the crowd and were able to get a seat, that probably makes all the difference. When seated we stayed until midnight. It felt like we were there for 2 hours instead of 4. The band is amazing and made up for the bad meal I had which had me kind of bummed. Its a divey kind of place, and it is as commercial as Beal street gets being in the middle of it all, but the bar maid was very pleasant and mixed a decent drink and the music was terrific. Hands down our favorite place in Memphis! Loove the vibes of this little juke joint and it's full of friendly people. The decor of the place is also right up my alley. And the music! The music is amazing! What I pictured in my mind when I imagined going to blues bars in Memphis...this place was it! We went on two different nights and the bands on both nights were great. The bartender on the first night (TC?) was super sweet. The drinks are cheap and do their job! Most of the people here are tourists from all different places but everyone was really nice and we ended up dancing the night away with some new friends on our second trip there. Its a small venue and it fills up pretty quickly so if you want a table or bar seat I'd suggest getting there a bit earlier. My friends and I were still talking about this place weeks after we returned from or trip about how much fun we had here. Big recommend! read more

My sister and I went to Memphis for a girls weekend and this - thank you, fellow Yelpers - was on our list of places to go. What an excellent choice! The bartenders were friendly and helped me discover that I like Old Fashioned's, the music was really great, and the atmosphere was perfect. It was exactly what I was looking for: old school feel, and as Anastacia S. said, you feel a bit like you've been transported back in time. Thankfully, it somehow avoids the kitsch of Beale St. and retains some authenticity. The restrooms are in the Rum Boogie Cafe next door, which isn't a big deal, and it wasn't difficult for us to get one of the high-top tables either. This is a pretty fun bar on Beale St. Local musicians wailing the blues and beers the size of you head! Probably the most divey bar I was in on Beale street but also maybe the coolest! I love the open air feeling of the front doors always being open and the music pumping into the street! The bar was pretty packed, it was the Saturday of a local St. Patty's parade, but this seems like a place that would be pretty packed all the time! Nice dive bar. Heard a cool band. Bartender was friendly. There was a $3 cover but it is worth it. The draft beers came in 2 sizes. Small and large. My wife had a PBR. It was ice cold. I had s local brew by Memphis Made called Fireside. It was tasty. The prices were reasonable. One flaw is there are no rest rooms, you have to leave the bar and use rest rooms next door. read more

Oh where to start on this place...! This is one of my favorite chill bars that I love to go to on Beale to listen to amazing blues tunes with my friends. No matter what day of the week it is, this place is always packed with either locals (like myself) or tourists wanting to hear some great tunes with a cold one in their hand.
