Reading Kyle's five-star review months ago was the first time I knew about the Center For Southern…read moreFolklore and I was intrigued, but for some reason it was put on the back burner, until I realized the Mayan Apocalypse is approaching. From their website, I found out a girls Jookin' contest would be held at the center one Friday evening and decided to see it for myself, having heard about the style from a dance show (no, it's not Dancing With The Stars). I didn't realize Jookin' was Memphis-born and most dancers are males. Despite starting almost an hour later than scheduled and being slightly disorganized (understandably, as an amateur contest), it was a fun event with a great community feel. As far as my inexperienced eyes could tell, some girls have the potential to "make it" in the Jookin' world. As a first-timer, I found the layout of this place a little confusing. The Jookin' contest was held in the hall, which is at the end of the hallway if you enter from the Belz Museum (another gem!) entrance off Main Street and you will also find a refreshment concession there, but that's not where they sell the peach cobbler raved by a previous reviewer, at least not that evening. The peach cobbler (which unfortunately did not impress me), along with gifts, works of art, a limited selection of food and drinks (including beers), is sold at the store off Main Street two doors down from the Belz entrance. The store is also where they normally host live-music events. As soon as I stepped inside the colorful, funky store, I was sold, so I dragged the hubby there the very next evening for the Deering & Down performance, despite knowing very little about them (yes, we had been living under a rock). As a music venue the store holds about 40 seats -- including a few tables and a few rows of seats -- plus some standing room. It's casual and intimate, setting the stage for an enjoyable evening. But it turned out to be more than enjoyable. It was exhilarating thanks to the knockout performance by the duo (plus special guests) who rocked their hearts out for almost three hours non-stop. Live music doesn't get much better than this! The ticket prices are very very affordable ( a mere $5 for Deering & Down!). The crowd is a mix of locals and out-of-towners. In fact, a business woman from NYC at the table next to ours also went to see the Jookin' contest like I did the night before and was thoroughly impressed. In short, you owe yourself a visit! If the world still stands after tomorrow.

Actually, I saw John Paul Keith & the 145's for the first time there & feel in love with their music, instantly. In addition to the festival, the Center has some unique gifts. They sell everything from t-shirts, postors, local art, local food (Rendezvous spicy popcorn, ugly mug coffee & sometimes - when you're lucky - local honey), and random, quirky souvenirs. I ventured to here for their brown bag lunch & music today. It's a great opportunity to check out someone new (to me). The inside of the store has a funky design; plenty of bright colors. There's a stage with colorful screen doors as a backdrop. It gives the audience a feeling of watching someone strumming the guitar on their front porch. It's just missing the rocking chairs. They sell beer, so you can have a cold one while listening to some down home music. Also, they have cobbler & a couple of southern inspired sundaes, like pecan pie. Yum!

The initial collection was started by John King, a Memphis native that founded Ardent Records with ties to the music scene as a musician, promoter, and more. This is a legendary establishment. Quite frankly, a gem that should be preserved. Every time I visit, I try to donate to their cause. I hope to one day contribute to their collection by donating vinyls as well. With so many available options, some respectable relics, some new, as a listener there will be no problem finding something to enjoy. If you're new to the Listening Lab, I recommend asking the vinyl conservator for guidance. Be sure to have in mind what you'd like to listen to, perhaps even ready for a recommendation too! The VPI players are EXTREMELY high quality and deserve the highest care for preservation of this beautiful facility. They even have a dedicated sound room for the ultimate hi-fi experience. The listening space is beautiful, with great views and comfortable seating. Overall, it's a magnificent and top-notch establishment. I love coming here and dedicating a moment or two to a listening experience.

The only Black-owned restaurant on Beale Street definitely did not disappoint for our first visit!…read more The Ladies of Carolina Double Dutch Therapy had an absolute blast as we attended the Annual Double Dutch Therapy Beale Street Takeover Event 4/30/26 - 5/3/26. What started as lunch quickly turned into karaoke -- LOL! The atmosphere was fun, welcoming, and full of good vibes. The food was so amazing that we had to personally meet the cook. Tyrone came out to our table, and let's just say that tip was WELL deserved! As we say in the Carolinas, "he put his foot in that food!" There were 13 of us, and despite our large group, the waitress never skipped a beat -- all while being the only server working during Friday lunch service. Her professionalism, attentiveness, and positive attitude truly stood out. The service, food, and ambiance made this an unforgettable experience, and these Carolinians will definitely be back! I couldn't attach the video of us singing; however, here we are! See you all next year ~DDT-LOC~

I sat at the bar even though I wasn't drinking because I was a party of 1. They have a smaller food menu at night but just enough to fill me up after the flight in. I came around 8:30 and it wasn't busy at all. The service was great and the music was great too! I did the catfish bites, Mac and cheese and corn bread. Omg all delicious. Hot, fresh and tasty. The catfish was fried to perfection (a little on the salty side though) and the Mac and cheese was sooo good.

The festival was at Tom Lee Park this year. I enjoyed the music but I won't attend this festival in…read morethe future for the following reasons: -The bag policy was clearly stated in the FAQ. Bags over 9x9 had to be clear. A member of my group was denied entry by an overzealous worker at the bag check area. The bag was 8.5x9. We had made sure. The worker refused to measure the bag stating "We don't have rulers." She refused to listen to reason and called security who backed her up. It was arrogant, unreasonable, mean and she was 100% incorrect. IF YOU HAVE A BAG SIZE POLICY, THEN HAVE A RULER ON HAND. -There was absolutely no accommodation for the disabled or seniors. No shuttle from the ADA parking, which was ridiculously far from the venue. No shade. Nowhere to sit but you weren't allowed to bring a chair. There were some benches away from any entertainment. At night they were in absolute pitch black darkness. -The food trucks were repetitive and unappealing. The lone taco truck was by the furthest entrance. The venue was a mile long. Nobody wanted to walk that far for tacos. -The porta potties we're set up in a row along the riverfront. As we sat waiting for a band at the VW stage, we hoped for a riverfront view and breeze. We got a porta potty view. This entire festival was set up thoughtlessly...or should I say that there was one thought...to get as much money out of festival goers as possible without considering their comfort. When the headliners are Robert Plant and Earth, Wind and Fire, you're attracting older people who can no longer sit on the ground or eat corn dogs.
