It was about 92 degrees. That was the most likely reading, by any human estimate, of any known hypothetical external ambient temperature measuring device aimed loosely at the Miami River corridor as I hastened my gait approaching Flagler st. en route to the newly minted "Over Under". Put briefly, It was hot and the images and digital tale of warm water oysters and frozen drink where two explanations for my hurried state. "The Fecund Clown" I thought. That was the strangest name for a store... Did it mean 'fat'? or was it 'pregnant'? ...like a 'pause' or 'one with child' -or maybe 'with ideas'? After Sandy carried pieces of Rockaway Queens to points unknown, "The Fecund Clown" storefront on the Boulevard was soon to follow. That word 'fecund' always stuck with me, and it seemed to apply here somehow I thought, though perhaps not...but I digress. I needed to sit down, and because I also needed to know many things exactly when and where I wanted to know them, I needed to consult the internet via the Google corporation on my (pocket computer) phone. As I walked my mind grew cloudy with repetition... If i did not scratch the itch i had for half knowing these factoids about my surroundings, I would likely fill with extreme existential dread and then potentially be carried away by the next thought my mind generated. Unless of course, I was able to watch that thought arise, and pass away rather than allow it to direct my hands into my pocket to retrieve my phone. Christ hon, Its an adult pacifier! But what now ... In what seemed like hours or minutes later, I had arrived at Over Under, Downtown Miami! A bespectacled millennial greeted me with what can only be described as dead pan panache. Though his tone was quite left coast, his attitude was as French like toast! A truly unique gentleman of this time. Some may be put off by the tragically hip, I imagine that's an insecurity or certain security from their younger days...Either way, submit to the moment and enjoy the day I say! This great fellow guided me through the maze of imagery and signs fastened to the wonderfully appointed take out window. The layers of reference, both insular and grandiose, was mind boggling. How these memesters navigate reality is a modern marvel. I was simultaneously terrified but yearned to know! It was here where the experience began to co·a·lesce --- I was reminded of Sun Tzu "Appear weak when you are strong, and strong when you are weak." It was as if this adage had guided some of this wonderfully quirky chaos into order ... Oh yes my order! "Warm Water Oysters" , "Slaty Fries", "Longshot Burger", and a "Cocktail du giorno" made by the west coast Frenchman's "colleague" ( another millennial even more welcoming and gracious than the first !) As she dropped the drink again I was WOWed by service and execution. The presentation was nothing short of scrumtrulecent. An east Village Won Ton soup container full of hogo and mir( as it were) fitted with a bouquet of aromatic herbs and a gator in the rough....MY MY IT WAS Christmas in July! THE FOOD: Warm water oysters where bright AND salty. These Florida bivalve molluscs boast perfect salinity and freshness. The mignonette is recommended. OUI CHEF! I ordered my Longshot burger "SOS" cause I'm not a Saucygarcon. Though upon receiving the sandwich, I slathered my buns with that 1000 island and ordered seconds for my fries. The amazing product coupled with the subtle confidence and earnest concern with which my experience was guided left me with hope for the future ...and 1 burning question: Who's running this place "Was it her? ... Or could it be the ...frenchman? Someone ELSE?!" "Let your plans be dark and impenetrable as night, and when you move, fall like a thunderbolt." ... Far enough Over Under. FAIR ENOUGH. A Miami standout, Over Under is one of those spots you could stay all night. Part restaurant, part cocktail bar, part lounge, Over Under is deliciously hip without feeling pretentious, and offers a great antidote for the normal Miami vibes that you may expect. We stopped in for drinks on a weekend night, and found a perfect spot on the bleacher seating in the back to take in the fun, tropical, retro-Florida inspired decor, all set against an eclectic, deep-dive, and vibey soundtrack. We sampled from their inventive and cheeky cocktail menu- a frozen Coquito for her and an absolutely outstanding oyster shell martini for me. It was truly one of the best martinis I've ever had. After finding a seat at the bar, we shared a slice of their gorgeously plated sour orange pie, that was so good it made me wish we had sampled more from their concise but delicious menu. Although this spot was beyond crowded, service from the bartenders was quick and friendly, and we felt very well taken care of. Do NOT come here if you are not considered to be "cool enough". Felt so disappointed in how we were treated at this place, I had been wanting to come here for so long (we are from Orlando). I was excited to experience that small neighborhood feel while being in Miami, my favorite city. Sadly I have to say, we did not feel welcome at all by any of the staff except for one person. The food was tasty but it is not worth coming back to a place where you felt like you are intruding. You want to support small businesses but not when you are treated like you are worthless! The server seemed slightly busy but was able to get to us in a reasonable amount of time. I wasn't surprised that the place was busy as much as for the day and time it was busy, Sunday about sunset. I was able to enjoy a nice cocktail, Vieux carre. Absolutely enjoyable. The bartenders sure do know what they are doing, so if you are looking for a quality cocktail. I've been wanting to check out this bar in downtown for a while. Came here on a Saturday late afternoon. I was able to get a table outside for a small group of 4. We started with a veggie burger with fries. The veggie burger was pretty good, a bit tart. The fries were great. ($14, a little on the pricier side) We ordered the "muscle relaxer" which is a dark rum frozen drink and it was quite tasty, along with a French 75 which was okay. We ordered a chocolate chip cookie as well. It was okay, a bit on the salty side. The staff is nice but the service takes an absolute eternity. Even when they weren't busy they take forever to come check on you. The vibe was nice and chill earlier in the evening, and then became a bit rowdier as the night went on. Amazing! We ordered chicken liver, glazed carrots, a beef empanada and vegan veggie burger. All we're outstanding. Flavors just right, we didn't feel the need to add anything (like salt, pepper, or ketchup to the burger), and even the drinks were spot on. All reasonably priced, good service, and nice environment. We found this place on a recommendation from the bartender at the Auld Dubliner and it didn't disappoint. We will be coming here again. Great downtown happy hour! They had 2 for 1 specials on beer, wine and 2 of the cocktails (free cup and temperature sensitive straw included!), and food specials. The burger was fantastic! Met up with my homie at this cheeky spot for a belated birthday vibe and a dosage of kitsch, had seen some buzz so decided to see what was up. Started with some Muscle Relaxers (Lv. 2 & 3) to cool off, they come frozen and there's 4 variations, including one where you need a cheat code (its locked lol). We munched on a veggie burger and a Jamaican jackfruit patty, both of which were good and a better choice than the Travis Scott meal, obviously. This place is the truth! Over Under may have the best happy hour in town right now. Until 7 pm, $5 gets you a beer and a shot of "bad whiskey" that's actually pretty good whiskey (Four Roses Yellow Label). $15 gets you those plus a cheeseburger and fries. And it's quite the burger, reminiscent of a souped-up Big Mac with a creamy Thousand Islands-style sauce, in-house pickles, and savory, thin ground beef patties. Fries hit the spot too. The bar also has very reasonably priced, well-made cocktails ($12-13 gets you Sazeracs, Vieux Carres, French 75s, etc. -- bit of a New Orleans theme going on here!). Oh lord. Where to start. I am from Tampa and found this spot by looking up on one bite app by barstools. We walked in and immediately was stared down by the employees sitting on the bar. I know they just opened at 5pm but they could be greeted us a bit. We continued to sit down and realized that there was not a pizza option on the menu. The bartender/server came over and we asked her about it. She informed us verbatim "Oh we do not have that, it says on our social media and we are up to date/ active on our social media." I said "oh I'm sorry we are from out of town so we did not think to check the social media. She continue to rudely inform us that it's only on Sundays and it a pop up etc etc and that it was on their social media. No big deal but if she was just friendlier , I would have stayed an had a drink or an app but the the fact she had to mention that social media again was kind of rude. Sorry I did not think to follow your social media before I came to get a pizza. A correct answer to a guest would be "Oh I'm sorry that you didn't know that the pizza was only on Sundays. we have some great cocktails and other appetizers available for you to try ." I immediately was a fan of this retro inspired dive in Downtown Miami. I enjoyed a Frozen Paloma and an awesome Frozen Irish Coffee during my visit. I also ordered the Cheeseburger, which is definitely among the best in South Florida. Not quite a smash burger, but close, covered in their blend of 1000-island dressing. Quantity: Strong cocktails, and the food comes in large portions. Value: $10 Frozen Cocktail Specials. $15 for the Cheeseburger. Ambiance: Over Under is an eclectic dive bar located in Downtown Miami. The layout is a bit odd, with some seats bunched up in the front and the narrow bar towards the back. HH options for drinks are limited with no cocktails included. HH frozen drinks (served in a tiny plastic cup), beers, wines are BOGO free, but upon receiving the bill you'll notice that while the value for the 2nd drink has been deducted, your tax and compulsory service charge (18%) are calculated using the original non-HH bill. I've been here 3x during quarantine and sat down 2x. The first time I sat down everything was great, second time my friend and I were completely ignored. There was a family sitting behind us that staff kept approaching, delivering food and asking if everything was ok. We just had drinks and were never approached. It wasn't something that we noticed after the fact, it was apparent we were being ignored. We were super annoyed and decided not to order anything else and just to leave. The reason I have four stars is bc despite the neglect, everyone was kind and the drinks are great--best place for frozen drinks. They are on point with Covid safety (masks, gloves, and santizing). Over Under is the perfect neighborhood bar. I've been to Over Under twice now, and can definitely tell it will be a staple that I return to. Since I'm gluten free, I've ordered the Jerk Chicken Leg which had tons of flavor. It comes with a carrot coconut curry puree, sweet plantains, pickled peppers and cilantro. Personally, I don't love curry (and would prefer jerk dishes and curry dishes to be separate), but it was still delicious. I've also ordered the cheeseburger with a gluten free bun - the GF bun normally comes with the veggie burger, but they can add it to a cheeseburger if you ask. Listen... this burger is PERFECT. it's not one of those super huge gourmet burgers, but a real, juicy, bar burger. The drinks are great, I've had the frozen Paloma and margarita. We had an overnight stop in Miami and checked out three bars near the Financial District, if this had been our first stop it would have been our final destination. I was greeted by a very friendly doorman who checked my ID for dinner. He informed me that a party was going to proceed later that night. I wasn't expecting it, but it didn't bother me. I think I started off on the wrong foot with the bartender when I asked for the menu right when they were reaching for it. They came out on ice, with a lime and mini Tabasco. I didn't love the taste of these oysters and really missed the traditional cocktail or mignonette sauce that normally comes with the dish. One of the non-bar servers friendly started up a convo to let me know about the weekly events that happen most nights. They sounded quite fun! Everyone seemed to rave about the happy hour specials which looked pretty good. This night was a bit of a miss for me, but the vibe and some exceptionally friendly staff left me with the thought that this could be a fun local bar to try again.
