I was pretty excited to try out Outer Clove, considering all the rave reviews on Yelp. Overall, it wasn't bad, but for me, it didn't earn a higher rating than the A-OK score of 3 stars. I went at 5:30pm on a Wednesday evening, and I was quickly informed that without a reservation, I wouldn't be able to get in at all. So try to make a reservation if you know you're going to be visiting! I asked if I could order some takeout then, at which point I was told that it would take minimum 45 minutes. So I settled for ordering some goulash and langos, which took about 10 or so minutes. The langos was excellent. Fried Hungarian bread rubbed in garlic, and perfectly seasoned with salt and pepper (and paprika and parsley?). No matter what, you should make sure to get at least a side order of langos. Unfortunately, I was quite disappointed with the goulash. It was about 75% unevenly chopped bell peppers with a few chunks of beef and potatoes. The soup itself was heavy on the paprika. The langos was the saving side dish grace, to be honest. I ordered the large goulash ($8), and it wasn't very large - I would pay no more than $5 or $6 in Vancouver for that size of a soup. Would come again for the langos for sure, but the goulash leaves much to be desired. read more

Highly recommend- came here with a large group. Stated with deep fried pickles and the pirogies- the best I've pirogies I have had. For main I had the Schnitzel which was amazing! We added the mushroom sauce with it - I am a schnitzel lover and this was one of the best. The portion size is huge ( would have preferred that it was served with spatzle) Other members in our group had the cabbage rolls and fettuccine; everyone enjoyed what they ordered. This place has continued to blow our minds over the years. Always totally fresh ingredients from scratch and it shows. Their latest incarnation is back to its 1980's Hungarian roots. With European street food, fondue, comfort bowls and incredibly tasty healthy options. There's something for everyone! We love the Langos and the Quasar Burger is hands down, the best chicken burger in the Kootenay Region (now we may be changing over to the habanero burger. It practically melted our lips off). The paprikash and goulash are so soothing and super yummy. And if you know anything about pomme frites, you need to come here. Our favorite server is Joy, but all the front end people are wonderful. Great, attentive and well-timed service. I caught the last of their lunch service (they close between 3-5), and had traditional Langos, the perogies, and the chilled sour cherry soup. They service local Nelson brewing beer on tap, as well as bottles with a bit of international selection. My wife is Slovakian and I've been a few times to Slovakia, Czech, Austria and Hungary, and there are a few choices in the menu (eg. Langos, Schnitzel, Lecho, Paprikash, Spaetzle, perogies) that pay homage to those places, while also carrying other dishes that would appeal to other tastes. (Burger people, I'm talking to you.) The chilled sour cherry soup is the kind my wife's grandmother used to make for her - it was a nice dessert. The perogies were crisp on the outside but the cream cheese on the inside was light and fluffy. The Langos was Uber-tasty. The flavor was good on everything, and the prices were very reasonable. read more

The first restaurant that I have been to in a long time whose Chef knew how to properly cook Calamari. The Calamari was tender and cooked to perfection. My husband had one of the two chicken burgers on the menu. He said the burger had a very flavourful taste that you wouldn't normally expect. This is definitely a place to go if you're in Nelson, BC. The staff was friendly and willing to accommodate my dietary restrictions. The inside of the cafe was quaint with a calming atmosphere. For anyone wanting a little privacy with a window, they have that too. read more

Amazing, hands down the best meal I've had at a restaurant in a long time. We started with the Poutine a la Brasso, the gravy was just the right amount of garlic with good squeaky cheese curds. The salad dressing was probably the next show stealer. It's flavor profile was nutty, garlicky, salty, and umami. It was so good I could have licked the container. My chicken sandwich was also good, but nothing spectacular when compared to the poutine and salad dressing. My husband had the special which was a vegetarian moussaka that I had to stop him from devouring so I could try a bite. Just like it's namesake, the outer clove is a homage to all foods garlic. This restaurant was one of the more interesting places we went during our week long tour of interior bc. We chose this restaurant based on recommendations from the hotel and fellow yelp reviews. The restaurant vibe is casual, a tad kitschy (Mona Lisa painting w a garlic strand around her neck) and pricing is very reasonable with most entrees priced in the mid teens $$. Some of my faves were the hummus plate, fish tacos and salmon entree. Much to my crew's disappointment, they ran out of salmon so only one of us got to enjoy it. If you aren't a garlic fan or want to be kissing tonight, the outer clove is not your spot. It's no joke, everything is prepared w garlic overload. read more

Very unique experience, the Hungarian twist to the menu was interesting and not what I was expecting. The new owners added their own flare to the menu. Having dated a Hungarian and been to Hungary I'm definitely a big fan of the cuisine. I found the Clove's chicken paprikosh however to be a tad bland. Also my girlfriend wasn't impressed with the poutine, she didn't feel well after eating it as it was quite greasy and on the heavy side. I will yet give them another try in the future given the uniqueness of the menu. The table next to us ordered the schnitzel and they looked massive! read more

To start things off, I had a beautifully prepared vampire caeser. If you don't like garlic, this is not the place for you. They serve this with a delicious salted rim and there is garlic chunks in the drink. Simply delicious. Next, I had the maple salmon. I have very few words to describe how perfectly the salmon was made. Flaky and decadent are two. The root veggies were amazing and the cherry tomatoes exploded upon first chew. The cranberry rice is equally amazing. To finish things off, I had the apple cider cheesecake. Due note, this is a place of perfection. The staff insists on everything being presented perfectly, and they naked this on the head. The cheesecake is out of this world. All in all, of garlic is your thing, come here! read more

At this point, I have eaten my way through the entire menu, and I loved it all. Highlights are the garlic soup, the quasar burger, and the lobster mac. The Caesar salad is also very good with an extra kick of garlic. The service can be a bit slow, but that is to be expected in Nelson (by Nelson standards, the service is actually pretty quick). If you don't like garlic, do not eat here. However, if you do, you might just find that you actually like garlic. For what it's worth, I don't trust people who don't like garlic. We've now returned from our BC & Alberta road trip, and when people ask where we went, when we say "... One night in Nelson" they always reply with, "Oh!! I love that town!! Service is not rushed, but rather on Nelson time which means it's made with love, so mellow out, relax, read a book. Chill out, as the teenagers say. Tagine $17 40 Clove Chicken $20 Catch of Clove $19 Deep Fried Pickles $8.95 are a MUST!! Order your garlic chocolate cookies before they are all gone! I can't believe this is only the 2nd Yelp review. I have a hunch it's because the locals don't want their secret to be known, otherwise they may have to wait for a table next time.
