Highlight at Otto's is the beer. Enjoyed the apricot wheat ale and the seasonal robust porter. Bought a Red Mo single for home and that was good too. Hubby enjoyed his IPA flight and took a 4-pk. Glad they have that purchase option. Food - it's totally fine. Just fine. But really not better than that. My fries were served cold, guessing because my black bean burger was done first and my plate had to wait for the others. Hubby had perfectly warm fries. We were in town this weekend for a tournament and dined in on Saturday with a group. We arrived around 5pm trying to beat the dinner rush and it worked, we were sat within minutes. We did split our group up to be sat sooner (our choice). They had a great selection of beers on tap and a nice selection in the coolers when you walked in. I had the seasonal Lemon Ginger shandy which was really light and refreshing. The first few sips were heavy with the ginger flavor but I love ginger! Everyone enjoyed their food, we had a wide array of dishes and no one had any complaints. The Buffalo chicken wrap was great and I liked their twist (cucumbers, tomatoes and red onions!). The sweet potato fries could use a dip or a seasoning and they were on the cold side. We really enjoyed the loaded nachos with meat added, it had a great flavor! The mustard wit the pretzel appetizer was really great, had a nice bite to it. Would recommend this restaurant, nice options/something for everyone on the menu! College town brew pubs have a certain ambiance that Otto's embraces. Some items were at par with our expectations and others exceeded them. I was pleased with the separate vegan/vegetarian menu, which is a reflection of being in a college town. With indoor/outdoor seating you can decide how to enjoy the experience. The buffalo chicken app was ok, but the tofu wings were unexpectedly crispy with a spicy-tangy sauce. The fish taco and prime beef sandwiches were enjoyed by the boys. I thought the black bean burger was delicious, but could have used a spicy-creamy sauce on the side. Service was efficient even though it was move-in week. Can't go wrong with a stop here. read more

Otto's is a slightly modern, but comfortably familiar food + bar experience that also brews their own beer. Sorta like a BJ's, if I had to compare it. The prices on food were fair, and the variety of choices was more than I was expecting! I got a very scrumptious creole crab dip with plenty of bread for spreading on, along with a decently sized bowl of chili with the extra sour cream I asked for. It was all delivered expediently by attentive waitstaff and an active bartender. No complaints about service! They also have a little store attached where you can buy singles or packs of beers and sodas you liked from the restaurant, along with the selection of merch. This was our first trip to a brewery at State College. We went here because they had food and beer and it was highly recommended by the owner of Happy Valley Vineyard and Winery. She said you can't go wrong here. We stopped and thought it was a win, win for us both. We ordered food and a tasting of 4 beers. I added a 5th beer because it was a hazy IPA that I didn't see on the menu. I try Hazy's no matter where I go, my go to beer. Sampled the beers and they were good, and I went with a glass of the Hazy IPA that I enjoyed. The food on the other hand was so so, we both didn't think highly of the food, maybe it was our choices perhaps, but maybe try something different next time. They did have Root Beer to go and purchased for our son who loves brewery Root Beer. He said it was sensational and have to agree with him as I tried it when we arrived home. Overall good stop. Place had a lot of rich history with breweries based on the signs in the place. read more

I quit going to Otto's not too long ago; used to be one of my favorites. Last time we went we ordered medium rare hamburgers and they came back way thin, overcooked and almost burned. I naturally complained and was made to feel I had committed a crime and was on trial. The waitress was unable to help and had to find a manager for assistance. In the meantime our food had gotten cold. It took a while to get things settled; it was not a pleasant dining experience. If they would have just simply taken the food back and replaced it I would not be writing this. I understand sometimes there can be a new cook, etc. Sometimes the fries aren't the freshest either if you go mid-afternoon and once I had rancid chicken wings. They wouldn't refund me my money because I tried eating one or two of them. I used to rave about their wings until the treatment I received over this incident. If you are visiting State College and want a delicious burger then I recommend dining at Olde New York at the other end of town. PS: They also had the audacity to cancel life time memberships recently of all the original Pub Club Members who helped to establish this place; they wanted $100/year to maintain your membership. To be fair the beers are excellent and worth a trip there if you just want to sample some beers. Eat at Olde New York first though or any other restaurant. read more

This was my second time at Otto's Pub & Brewery. The service here was adequate. Our server was excellent; however, our food took a tad too long for my liking. I ordered a pulled pork sandwich and felt that it was a bit bland, though the fries were tasty! My friend ordered the Mac and Cheese, and said that it was yummy and that the bacon was as a nice touch. Otto's is a great spot--four stars (instead of five) only because I haven't tried the food. My companion and I stopped here on a late Saturday afternoon and had a great experience sitting at the bar. Ross, our bartender, was super friendly and attentive without being obnoxious. I enjoyed the Mt. Nittany Pale Ale and the Spruce Creek Lager. Both were fresh and excellent. Otto's has great industrial-inspired interior. The large main bar is unusually shaped. To me, it looks like a "P" (as in Penn State). The noise level during our visit was low but it undoubtedly gets more boisterous with larger crowds I highly recommend Otto's based on this drinks-only visit and look forward to sampling their food in the future. read more

Artificial colors and flavors used. This is so sad. And unnecessary. Came here with my family and had some mixed experiences. 10yo was excited for the house-made sodas till we discovered they all have artificial colors and/or flavors. I get that this is the case from the big manufacturers but very disappointing to find here. I had steak and upgraded to add sautéed mushrooms. While the flavor was fine the mushrooms were cold and steak was lukewarm. When ordering I asked if the butternut squash side could be swapped for Brussel Sprouts (which are on the menu) but that was not possible. Pork schnitzel Pretzel sandwich was good as was Beef on a Weck. Smoked wings had zero smoke flavor coming through but were tasty nonetheless. We wouldn't go out of our way to return. read more

We had the pleasure of dining here while visiting Penn State for a college tour. It came highly recommended by an alum and certainly lived up to the hype. Our waiter, Garrett, was fantastic. Super personable and gave excellent recommendations for food and beer. I told him to surprise me and he built my flight based on me saying "I don't like stouts." My three beers were amazing. Best sour I ever had. My husband enjoyed his beer flight, too. The food was all delicious. We ordered a salad, fish and chips, a slider basket, and a pizza. It was all fresh tasting. The fish was flaky the way real fish should be and the burgers were extremely juicy and seasoned perfectly. The crust was thin and crispy on the pizza and the salad was enough to feed more than one. We had leftovers that kept well through the next day. We hope she ends up at Penn State and are thrilled to return when we're back in the area. read more

I do not write this review with bad intention, however this has by far been the worst experience I have ever had at a restaurant and with me eating at Ottos on various occasions, this day will be the last time I spend my money there. I would like to preface by saying that I do understand the urgency and how busy it gets when there is a football game, however that does not allow employees of any rank to treat customers so poorly. I had originally a party of four, we detailed to the waitress that we will be having four others join and she stated to us that this was fine and she would either move us to the bigger table or they would accommodate something. After giving updates to the waitress when they were an hour out, 30 minutes out, and 5 minutes out, they came into the restaurant and sat at the vacant table next to us. Long story short, a manager (grey hair, caucasian lady) came to our guest at the next table and with all the theatrics and waving of the hands told them to 'get up and go to the front and put their names down' she stated it twice getting more dramatic (I really don't want to call her prejudice, but the theatrics were unlike any other she used to other guests of the restaurant). After she rudely tried to get them up, I called her over and explained that we were in communication with our waitress and this action was approved and she would need to talk to the waitress before she rudely comes over. After this, and sitting with what just happened, we all (8 of us) chose not to dine there. We asked for the checks so we could leave. I personally asked one waitress (mixed light skin girl, if I knew their names I would name them) to grab our waitress when she has a second. She proceeds to get stern, raise her voice and say 'She will get to you when she has time, I am not going to grab her.' At this point, I lost it. And at that moment I realized that this may not be a matter of race, but just ignorance and lack of respect. If you cannot handle a stressful environment, do not work in the food industry. If you cannot handle working with various types of people from different backgrounds, do not work in the food industry. If your respect and consideration is limited, do not work in food industry. THIS IS COMING FROM SOMEONE WHO WORKED IN IT. I am so disappointed and will never dine there again. OH! And when I went to the front to pay my bill, the manager up front tried to 'check' me and say the person who I was raising a complaint about was a 'manager.' Like I told her, I do not care if she was the CEO, there is a way you talk and treat people. I will inform anyone who asks me about this restaurant NOT to dine there. read more

Very happy I heard about this place , excellent food and beverages combined with good service. I have been there several times in September and had appetizers, burgers had specials all very tasty. I personally think they tend to over cook proteins so do yourself a favor and ask for red / rare and if you like things spicy Rods sauce is amazing. I was in the area for a meeting and stayed at the Fairfield Inn in State College and this restaurant shares the parking lot with this Fairfield Inn, which made it very convenient to walk over for dinner! Service was pretty decent... I tried their smoked wings which looked really good when they came out, but didn't have much smokey flavor to them.  They were really tasty with the spicy sauce I got to go with them.  I also tried their vodka as a Martini, up with a twist and it was decent, but had too much flavor to the vodka, not sure what it's made from.  Their Rum Barrel drink was unique and interesting and tasted fine.  Lastly, I also tried their huge pretzel and it was decent too.  Came out piping hot and the mustard that came with it was really good and spicy.  But it was so hot it felt like it had just come out of the microwave and sure enough, within 5 minutes, it was cool and rubbery/hard, like bread from the microwave.  I assumed that since it was getting close to closing, this is how they might have heated the pretzel up. Overall, not a bad place to grab grub and a drink.  I'll definitely return if in the area again and definitely try more from their burger or handheld menu. read more

Food has been delicious no matter what dish we try. The overall atmosphere embraces sports, offering multiple screens to watch every and any game that is happening. There is plenty of seating to accommodate for large group sizes. And are family friendly. And of course when we head out we stop by and grab some of their ginger beer. read more
