I first visited Otto Bar over a decade ago to see the late Daniel Johnston perform after watching a documentary about him and becoming obsessed. It has since become a favorite bar, yeah, the floors are sticky and the bathrooms are gross, they have love music and strong drinks what do you expect folks?!!? They have hosted the Sad and Boujee party three times, hopefully more to come, Lady Gaga and Britney Spears dance parties, Drake night ... but don't get the wrong idea, the next night they host some indie punk rock band that you could not pay me to listen to, a local rapper that I maybe dated and went to see out of obligation, or a spoken word poet who will make me sob. That's one of the beautiful things about this joint. Oh, and the art, they have art decorating the walls (for sale) by local artists including MICA students. The crowd is mixed in every way, peaceful, and friendly. Never a any safety concerns in the establishment or surrounding area. Now here is what inspired me to leave this review ... COVID. My fiancé, his brother, my sister in law, and I NEEDED to get out. Fells is a poop show right now so I checked to see if old faithful was open. They are. Outdoors. Masks are required unless you are at your table, tables are spaced at least six feet apart, they take your temp, and social distancing is kindly enforced. So good to see such responsible behavior. I went to Ottobar for the first time this week on a Saturday night. This place has two floors: a top floor which resembles a standard bar area, and a bottom floor which has a bar and a stage for bands to play. The venue itself is exactly what you would expect from a small rock venue: stickers all over the place, cheap drinks, loud music, denim vests, etc. My main problem with this bar was the staff. When it was 1:40 am they started walking around screaming (literally screaming): "GET THE F#*K OUT! GET THE F#*K OUT!" Everyone, even the people who looked like regulars, stood up and started milling around - closing tabs, collecting coats, etc. No one seemed to have a sense of urgency. Note that even though it was a Sat night, there were prob only 30-40 people in the place, so the level of anger and urgency in their voices was completely ridiculous. I was waiting for my friend to pay her tab when they began their screeching again with renewed vigor (1:43am): "GET THE F#*KING F#*K OUT RIGHT F#*KING NOW!" Everyone started shuffling toward the door, and I couldn't help but laugh at how insanely urgent their squawking was getting. I remember laughing and turning to my friend as we were walking out and saying "Wow! So polite here!" One of the staff, the bartender who I had bought a drink from earlier and given a 50% tip, overheard me: "YEAH WE ARE F#*KING POLITE HERE, JUST STAY AROUND AND SEE HOW F#*KING POLITELY WE TREAT YOU!" (still screaming, which was hilarious because the music is off and the room is pretty quiet) I couldn't help but laugh at this because it was so desperately aggressive, but I won't be going back to the Ottobar. read more

I've been to Ottobar about a dozen or so times, but it wasn't until I was there on Friday, for my best friend's first solo art show, that I realize how much I love and hate the Ottobar. Confusing, right? Let me start all over. Ottobar seems like a hole-in-the-wall-dive-bar/local-band-music-venu at first glance (at least, at this yuppie's first glance). A stone brick building, next to a dark and creepy alley, with no visible signage on the outside to let me know that I have indeed arrived at the Ottobar, and that yes, the fire and health departments have both cleared this space for occupancy. The inside isn't much better. Like a typical music venue, there is desperately limited seating and everything is painted black. The stairs to the upstairs "balcony" area is rickety, and the floors are uneven, which always causes me to trip. Ottobar caters to the punk, goth, and hipster crowd (or at least it seems so when I go), and if I have inadvertently mangled your subculture, I apologize - I blame the tragically poor lighting in Ottobar for that. I hate the Ottobar because it could be so much more. Each time I've been there, the place has been packed - or at least incredibly full. Would it really be that difficult to throw in a couple more benches? Perhaps even out the floor a bit? Mayhaps toss in a couple extra nails onto the stairs to the balcony? Maybe revamp the bathroom a bit - as this is a music venue and bar - let's face it, a large and working bathroom is key to a successful night. However, despites these failings, I love the Ottobar because of something that nails and benches and paint could never do - the Ottobar attracts some of the friendliest people I have ever met. Please keep in mind that I'm a yuppie. I wear button-down shirts, and cashmere sweaters. My belts don't have studs on them, and I would probably faint if anyone tried to pierce anything on my face...in fact, I fainted when I got my ears pierced! Despite the fact that I am completely out of my element, and I stand out like a sore-thumb, I have met the most amazing people from different walks of life at Ottobar. I've met some fabulous roller girls, a gorgeous pin-up girls. I even once met someone who is a buttoned up professor during the day - but after hours, sports the most amazing mohawk I've ever seen. Of course, I think that how friendly you find the natives of any establishment, has to do with your own attitude towards new experiences and people. However, as my best friend is a punk-rock goddess, she often exposes me (drags me) to new adventures, and I've been at venues where the people are snobby and completely exclusive and unwilling to deal with you, unless you are of their subculture. Ottobar seems to attract people who are friendly and open to new experiences themselves. As I am not usually a huge fan of the majority of bands that the Ottobar books - I will admit that my musical tastes are trapped in the 80's - I was very pleasantly surprised by the "upstairs bar" that my best friend had her art show on Friday. Up a narrow staircase behind the bouncer, this room is completely separated from the main room downstairs, and there is much more seating, pool tables, and a much more relaxing and mellow place - sort of like a punk-rock lounge. I don't come to Ottobar as a regular thing, but when I'm in the mood to take a walk on the wild-side, or let my inner Nancy loose, this is where I will head. read more

This place is a total dive. If total dives are your thing, you'll love it! If, like me, your tastes are a little classier, you'll be a little uncomfortable. We went there to see a show and were surprised there were so few seats: maybe 20 upstairs, many of which were reserved, and some risers along the wall. The rest was standing room. For a show, that's a long time to stand, and seriously, you don't want to touch any more of the floor or walls than you have to. The crowd was pretty diverse. We saw college kids with X-ed hands and plenty of senior citizens as well. Yep. Tie-dyed hippies and fedoraed hipsters. Little black dresses and cutoff jorts. It takes all kinds to make a world, and all of those kinds are adequately represented here. We got more entertainment value out of the crowd than from the performers! The reason they get 3 stars and not 2 has to do with the drinks. They were strong and cheap. For $13 we got two premium liquors, and the bartendress was friendly and fast to boot. So, if there's no cover, it might be worth it to stop here for a drink or two and see the sights! read more

I love the Ottobar because: 1) I've never been kicked in the head here. 2) Attracts some pretty decent tours and bands despite its relatively small size 3) Never overly crowed even during shows with larger headliners 4) I met Geoff from Ace of Cakes here AND got to see him perform (he was better than Duff) 5) Cool little balcony to sit on if you don't feel like full audience participation 6) Nice vibe. It feels like a place that you can really connect with the performer. 7) Nice mellow loungey up stairs with full bar, pool, and some funky seating. There is also another small area upstairs for mainly solo performances. 8) They always have free water out for the more intense shows - 1star for lax security near stair case on the stage... its easy for any asshole to climb up on stage and get their 15 min. It's close to the art's district but not close enough to be nice. Drive here, don't walk. There is a decent sized free parking lot behind the building. read more

I officially realized last night that I'm old. We headed to Ottobar for a show that was supposed to start at 9 which I felt was kind of late for a Sunday. There were openers so we didn't come until 9:30, but no worries, they were still setting up the opening band. Finally they started at 9:50 and I would never recommend them to anyone. It was just a lot of loud drumming and I nearly caught myself saying, "What is that racket?!" which would have made me even older. When the hell that was Avacado Happy Hour ended they quickly set up the show I was there to see and it was quite enjoyable! The place is pretty small and there really isn't a "bad area." We were up on the second floor viewing space which is great if you aren't tall and have no claustrophobia issues. The acoustics were great and I would almost recommend staying on the lower level unless you need a seat (like us old people). We were down there at one point and you could see everything really well which is usually an issue. The show finished by midnight and I was happy to go back home. I had no inclination to do something else or stay out later. That is when you know you're getting old. FYI, be careful going up the stairs because there is definitely a large wall that is easy to run into and hit your forehead on. Not that it happened to me or anything... But if it did happen, my head might still hurt today. read more

This place has been on the scene for at least a decade, that's saying something. It is a dive music venue that has a bar, not a dive bar with music. That is a big difference in focus that is key to enjoying your experience at the ottobar. I guess having the word bar in the name is confusing. the booking is on point for the space. They book bands that you want to brag about having seen in such an intimate venue. Minus a star cause weird location and I never know where to park without getting towed but I understand a place like this can't exist in a high rent area or have valet parking. read more

Ottobar is pretty much the guaranteed destination for me and my friends on Tuesday nights. The two-for-one drink special is the reason to go, the free pool, solid music, and good people are the reason to stay. I always regret it come Wednesday morning but I usually have a good time. I definitely go more out of convenience than because I actually like the place but it still makes for an okay spot to hangout with friends for a few hours. The ambiance is grungy and the clientele tends to be split between crust punks and hipsters but people are generally pleasant and it's pretty easy to make new friends if you make yourself a regular. They have other daily drink specials as well (apparently the $10-all-you-can-drink special on Mondays is worth checking out) but I've only ever been on Tuesdays. I don't think I'd want to find myself at Ottobar more than once a week so I'm happy sticking with my regular night. As for shows, it's a pretty solid venue. It's a good size with decent acoustics, although sold-out shows can get kinda gross and sweaty. Just be warned that their all-ages shows tend to lean more toward the younger set. I saw La Dispute a few weeks back and the place was overrun 16 year old wannabe scene kids with swoopy hair and braces. Kind of adorable to watch their awkward interactions but it also made me feel hella old. read more

This is hands down my favorite place ever to see live music, and probably my favorite place in Baltimore. They book really great bands (bigger bands and small local ones). And I agree with the people who compare it to 930, but the difference is that Ottobar actually still books GOOD bands. Bartenders are friendly. Drinks are cheap. I love how small this place is. You can always hear/see everything. Just don't get stuck behind that giant pole on the stage ;) Just some of the amazing shows I've seen here: Twin Shadow, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, SHARON VAN ETTEN (ah!) with Flock of Dimes, Dan Deacon, Twin Sister, Dum Dum Girls, Cloud Nothings, a few friends' local bands, the list goes on. The Ottobar is fantastic if you're looking for a great time. It has relatively large name bands come through to do small club shows. MC Chris and Aesop Rock were two memorable ones. If you aren't in the mood for a concert they do frequent dance party events that are also a ton of fun such as 80's Prom and Madonna/Prince/Michael Jackson night. There are two stories to Ottobar and there is a fair amount of parking if people don't park their cars like morons and you get there before the doors open. If you're making a late appearance, park on the street a few blocks away and make sure you put anything expensive in your trunk. read more

This a great small venue for concerts. Just like most other places like this, the outside isn't very pleasing to the eye and it can be a little confusing to locate, and parking isn't great, but it's the inside that matters. :) It's on the smaller side, which is fine for the shows that are usually played here as they tend to be a little more low-key, but it's an organized layout and not confusing at all to navigate to the bathrooms or to the bar. The bartenders are fabulous, they make the best Long Island Iced Teas ever. :) There's a nice little standing area by the bar, and plenty of places to sit if you need to. Decent venue for smaller and local acts. My first visit was Monday night to see a friend's band play (subtle plug for Middle Child Syndrome). They opened for Gelatine, Typherus, and Geist (all asian metal/punk bands). Apparently they exist in America. I felt a tad out of place upon first entering. I like metal and hard rock music but I don't really look the part. I showed up in a bright white polo, jeans, and white sneakers. My girl showed up in her typical Taiwan FOB style. Everyone else there wore black, had eyeliner, sported a studded belt, or had chains hanging off their body. You get the picture. Though, I WAS sporting my just-cut-an-hour-beforehand mini mohawk. :-D Everyone was cool with everyone it seems so that was cool. The drinks weren't too badly priced. The bartender was excellent and was great with suggesting drinks. He even bought shots of Jameson for us. There was an orange Gatorade water jug (the kind you see at high school football games) on the bar and Dixie cups. Free and easily accessible water. I always feel awkward asking for water at a bar for my girl without ordering a drink for myself, so this was great. Mensroom was a little small but useable. I imagine it gets crowded and nasty when the venue is near capacity. The building was less than half full that night. There is a balcony next to the stage that you can watch the show from, too. Really cool view. I'd come back for another show again. It was great seeing the other bands in the crowd with us whenever another band was performing on stage. read more

It was difficult deciding how many starts Ottobar would get, because I have trouble thinking of this two-story venue as one place. I love the big stage downstairs - it's my favorite place to see bands like Warpaint or Wye Oak, and the bar in back is cool. But when you go upstairs, it tends to be a hot mess. Standard bar - but awkward nooks of couches, random scattered tables and pool tables in between what looks like two dance floors? I never know where to sit. Best part about the Ottobar? Mustache Dace Parties. Four DJs, ridiculous music, lots of beer, MICA freshman who think they are super hot stuff, and a bunch of other random Baltimoreans. If you can get past the fear of dancing in front of other people, this is the most fun you can have on a Tuesday night. read more

One night after a show I went around the corner to get my car when a bunch of 13 year olds from the neighborhood threw a 40 bottle and hit me in the head before landing a nice hit to my windshield all because I wouldn't buy them a bottle of bacardi. Too bad the show I went down to the Ottobar for wasn't worth it. Still, I've been back plenty of times since. Mainly because the shows usually are worth it. There's no cover to the upstairs bar (with a great jukebox you can use if there's no DJ playing). The drinks are cheap (compared to someplace like the 930 club or the Black Cat in DC). Can't believe it's taken me this long to write a review of possibly my favorite place in Baltimore. Anywho... I've seen so many shows here over the years that I've lost count. They always have an awesome lineup, and even if you don't know the band that's playing that night, odds are they'll be good and/or interesting. The drinks are reasonably priced for a venue, and all the staff are friendly and unpretentious. If you have issues here it's cause you're the problem. They often have fun dance parties up stairs and all kinds of other random events. Definitely a gem of Baltimore and this town would be a whole lot more boring without the Ottobar. read more

I love going to the Ottobar! It's a good place for indie bands to perform. The venue isn't too big, so you can usually see the bands. It never gets too crowded, but they do attract a certain group of people (me included). The bands usually hang out after their gigs, so it's nice to chat/take pics/get an autograph with them if they stay around. The drinks are fairly priced. Not pretentious place. I know they serve pizzas and have chips available for purchase, but I haven't had them. Also, there is a upstairs area where there are pool tables and sometimes a DJ. Overall, a very cool place. I just wish it wasn't so isolated (kind of a sketchy area to walk alone). read more

As I travel a lot for concerts, both as an artist and fan, I had the pleasure of going to many an establishment....from opera houses to house parties, and in between, more dive bars than you can shake a stick at. Now, don't get me wrong...I freakin' love dive bars. The dark, no frills, somewhat "seedy" atmosphere of a true dive bar is a beacon, to me. I got a chance to check out Baltimore's Ottobar while in town last year, for the Maryland Deathfest, a 4+ day underground metal music festival. They host the Fest kickoff/prefest show, with Immolation, Misery Index, Crowbar etc entertaining the masses. The venue has two floors, and there wasn't a bad "seat" in the house. As I film, I opted for the upstairs area which gave me a great overhead view of the stage. The stage itself was pretty good sized, and stood about chest high (I'm 6'). The interior in on itself is pretty bare bones, with the random band flyer/poster serving as the bulk of the interior decorating. Despite the crowd, the layout makes it rather easy to navigate, with plenty of open unencumbered areas to walk. The staff was friendly enough, and drink prices about average for a dive bar, though I mainly stuck to beer, so I can't vouch for liquor prices. It did take a while to get a drink, though. Yeah, it was crowded, but it seems like attractive young women are quicker to be served than some dude, regardless of cash in hand. Hey bartenders, not a good way to get a tip...and that girl's not going home with you; she's just working you for stronger /or free drinks...so you're losing twice. No tip, and no action...just sayin' Took off a 1/2 star for the repeated slight at the bar, so would give 3 1/2 stars for Ottobar. All in all, a pretty cool dive bar/music venue that is supportive of underground music, but if you're a dude trying to get a drink, have your girlfriend order 'em, you'll get served quicker. read more

I've never been downstairs but upstairs is always pretty cool. Decently priced drinks, especially with the occasional Groupon. The jury is still out on if the pool table is free or not. Sometimes we step up and play, sometimes we are shut down in the middle of the game. But by that time, we are drinking so we've never cared. Bathrooms are clean at the beginning of the night and progressively get worse lol. Ehh, what can ya do? Now, my simultaneously most and least favorite thing about Ottobar is the customers dancing. It's usually like a train wreck that you can't stop watching. I've seen guys refuse to be friendzoned yet dancing like the FZ mascot...I've seen drunk party girls non-ironically repeating all the moves from Hitch...I've seen drunk guys dancing like SpongeBob with the Krusty Krab Pizza...I've seen drunk couples grinding it out unnecessarily on the dance floor...(I was looking in a mirror. I love this place. I caught Bosnian Rainbows with Omar Rodriguez here back in Febuary. It was cold, a bitter cold night but the venue was red hot with music and electricity. Great acoustics , I like the intimacy with the performers and prices are usually reasonable. And I like the indie vibe. Get your live music fix here people, you wont be disapointed. read more

The Ottobar is my favorite live music venue in the area. Sure it's sort of a dive, but that's part of the fun of any alternative music venue. It has been the choice of some punk and metal staples to perform in Baltimore. All of the people are nice and the bouncers usually don't bother anyone unless something really dangerous is happening. It's a pretty small place so it is easy to see the bands, but if a large pit breaks out, most of the floor gets sucked into it. I have loved the Ottobar for years and most of my favorite concert memories have taken place there. read more

Ottobar, besides being the central hub of sub-mainstream music in Baltimore, brings to town a handful of huge bands with the draw of a great sound system, incredibly friendly staff, and enormous selection of cheap brews, despite its otherwise small capacity. This is the kind of place bands WANT to play. As far as a fan's experience, never having to pay more than $20 to see a show (most are under $15) as well as drink specials every night make this place a college student/young professional's dream. Parking is free and everywhere. They even offer $75 season passes that get you into every show at no cover for the entire year. The only con I've found is it's rather difficult accessibility - you need a car or to take the city bus to get there. Also, it's not the nicest neighborhood to be walking around at night. It's not that the crime is a serious problem, but the streets are largely unlit and vacant and can make for an uncomfortable walk sometimes. read more

I've seen several burlesque performances here and a couple of bands (I'm not a big live music person) and it's a decent venue. I'd certainly check to see if it's an all-ages show or just for grown-ups. One word of warning: Do NOT put your drinks on a tab. Pay with cash as you go and pay attention to what you're being charged. I went one night and spent $20 cash on drinks and two nights later, exact same drinks, almost $40 on my card. The same has happened to other people... And FYI, Baltimore has a smoking ban now, so the air isn't an issue anymore. read more

It is what it is. This place is a Baltimore institution. If you search Baltimore photos on flickr, I've noted Ottobar is the most popular tag. In all honesty, the Ottobar is just not my scene. It's pretty filthy (the bathrooms especially), and I've found the bartenders aren't the most friendly. I do enjoy myself if a friend is in a band, and they are having a show. The annual Michael Jackson vs. Madonna vs. Prince party is not to be missed, and Halloween at the Ottobar isn't comparable to any other scene in Baltimore. There are other special events that include women wrestling in jello and the like. Those types of spectacles are 100% great entertainment, but I wouldn't recommend swinging by the Ottobar on a random night looking for a good time. I suggest checking it out at least once. It is on the list of requirements for a true Balti-moron initiation, after all. read more

Great small club to see a band in! We stopped here after learning that an old friend of mine was playing a show here while on tour. After hitting Bad Decisions first for an energy boosting cocktail, we headed to Ottobar for a punk rock midnight show of D.Y.S. Great gritty venue with bar in back and plenty of places to stand so a short gal like myself could actually see the stage. Reminded me of Al's Bar in downtown LA and Anti-Club before they closed. I never quite figured out how to spell it, but considering it was my mainstay every Tuesday night senior year of college, I probably should have gotten that by now. Amazing Bar & Venue, with some of the best staff in Baltimore. Patrick, Chuck, & Megan are my favorite bartenders there, and they really add to the personality of the bar. This bar offers the best shows, with a killer selection of alcohol served up at some of the best prices I have seen across the country in this same style atmosphere. My first visit to this dive bar/music venue was to see Bad Suns and I can see why people have a love/hate relationship with it. It all comes down to personal preference, which for me favors smaller, intimate spots like this for live music versus the huge outdoor amphitheaters or indoor arenas around the BAL/DC area. So yeah, it's not big and standing room only, but they do have a bar in the back with beer and wine selections. Just be prepared to wait in line outside for awhile prior to your show since it takes awhile to get through the ticket scan and mandatory ID check/hand stamp procedures. read more

It's known as the place where the hipsters hang out, but the real reason you'll find the Ottobar so appealing is simple: nobody cares who you are. Everyone is welcome. The drinks are a good deal and it's one of the best places to see up and coming bands as well as bigger acts. It's the place you'll be saying (in the future), "I remember seeing (fill in the blanks) before they were selling out stadiums!" That said, don't expect anything fancy here. The Ottobar will never be confused with some of the dressier clubs around town and that's the way we like it! Its no-frills fun where you can go to see local rock stars play pool upstairs on 2-4-1 Tuesdays while listening to great British Pop and Garage Rock from local DJs.
